Anomalous Diffusion in Infinite Horizon Billiards
We consider the long time dependence for the moments of displacement < |r|^q
> of infinite horizon billiards, given a bounded initial distribution of
particles. For a variety of billiard models we find ~ t^g(q) (up to
factors of log t). The time exponent, g(q), is piecewise linear and equal to
q/2 for q2. We discuss the lack of dependence of this result
on the initial distribution of particles and resolve apparent discrepancies
between this time dependence and a prior result. The lack of dependence on
initial distribution follows from a remarkable scaling result that we obtain
for the time evolution of the distribution function of the angle of a
particle's velocity vector.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures Submitted to Physical Review
Planck Oscillators in the Background Dark Energy
We consider a model for an underpinning of the universe: there are
oscillators at the Planck scale in the background dark energy. Starting from a
coherent array of such oscillators it is possible to get a description from
elementary particles to Black Holes including the usual Hawking-Beckenstein
theory. There is also a description of Gravitation in the above model which
points to a unified description with electromagnetism.Comment: 18 pages latex; talk at the Max Born Symposium 2009, Wrocla
Three point SUSY Ward identities without Ghosts
We utilise a non-local gauge transform which renders the entire action of
SUSY QED invariant and respects the SUSY algebra modulo the gauge-fixing
condition, to derive two- and three-point ghost-free SUSY Ward identities in
SUSY QED. We use the cluster decomposition principle to find the Green's
function Ward identities and then takes linear combinations of the latter to
derive identities for the proper functions.Comment: 20 pages, no figures, typos correcte
Infrared enhanced analytic coupling and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD
We study the impact on chiral symmetry breaking of a recently developed model
for the QCD analytic invariant charge. This charge contains no adjustable
parameters, other than the QCD mass scale , and embodies asymptotic
freedom and infrared enhancement into a single expression. Its incorporation
into the standard form of the quark gap equation gives rise to solutions for
the dynamically generated mass that display a singular confining behaviour at
the origin. Using the Pagels-Stokar method we relate the obtained solutions to
the pion decay constant , and estimate the scale parameter ,
in the presence of four active quarks, to be about 880 MeV.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures; to appear in J. Phys.
Fragmentation production of doubly heavy baryons
Baryons with a single heavy quark are being studied experimentally at
present. Baryons with two units of heavy flavor will be abundantly produced not
only at future colliders, but also at existing facilities. In this paper we
study the production via heavy quark fragmentation of baryons containing two
heavy quarks at the Tevatron, the LHC, HERA, and the NLC. The production rate
is woefully small at HERA and at the NLC, but significant at and
machines. We present distributions in various kinematical variables
in addition to the integrated cross sections at hadron colliders.Comment: 13 pages, macro package epsfig needed, 6 .eps figure files in a

Supersymmetric Extra Dimensions: Gravitino Effects in Selectron Pair Production
We examine the phenomenological consequences of a supersymmetric bulk in the
scenario of large extra dimensions. We assume supersymmetry is realized in the
bulk and study the interactions of the resulting bulk gravitino Kaluza-Klein
(KK) tower of states, with supersymmetry breaking on the brane inducing a light
mass for the zero-mode gravitino. We derive the 4-d effective theory, including
the couplings of the bulk gravitino KK states to fermions and their scalar
superpartners. The virtual exchange of the gravitino KK states in selectron
pair production in polarized \epem collisions is then examined. We find that
the leading order operator for this exchange is dimension six, in contrast to
that of bulk graviton KK exchange which induces a dimension eight operator at
lowest order. The resulting kinematic distributions for selectron production
are dramatically altered from those in D=4 supersymmetric scenarios, and can
lead to a enormous sensitivity to the fundamental higher dimensional Planck
scale, of order .Comment: 48 pg
A combined numerical and experimental study of the 3D tumble structure and piston boundary layer development during the intake stroke of a gasoline engine
Due to its positive effect on flame propagation in the case of a well-defined breakdown, the formation of a large-scale tumble motion is an important goal in engine development. Cycle-to-cycle variations (CCV) in the tumble position and strength however lead to a fluctuating tumble breakdown in space and time and therefore to combustion variations, indicated by CCV of the peak pressure. This work aims at a detailed investigation of the large-scale tumble motion and its interaction with the piston boundary layer during the intake stroke in a state-of-the-art gasoline engine. To allow the validation of the flow near the piston surface obtained by simulation, a new measurement technique called “Flying PIV” is applied. A detailed comparison between experimental and simulation results is carried out as well as an analysis of the obtained flow field. The large-scale tumble motion is investigated based on numerical data of multiple highly resolved intake strokes obtained using scale-resolving simulations. A method to detect the tumble center position within a 3D flow field, as an extension of previously developed 2D and 3D algorithms, is presented and applied. It is then used to investigate the phase-averaged tumble structure, its characteristics in terms of angular velocity and the CCV between the individual intake strokes. Finally, an analysis is presented of the piston boundary layer and how it is influenced by the tumble motion during the final phase of the intake stroke
Bright spots, physical activity investments that work : sweatcoin : a steps generated virtual currency for sustained physical activity behaviour change
Sweatcoin converts the step count recorded on smartphones into a virtual currency. Using this app, users generate financial rewards through physical activity, with higher levels of activity creating a higher ‘income’. Sweatcoins can subsequently be used to purchase commercially available products from an in-app marketplace
Natural Variation in Decision-Making Behavior in Drosophila melanogaster
There has been considerable recent interest in using Drosophila melanogaster to investigate the molecular basis of decision-making behavior. Deciding where to place eggs is likely one of the most important decisions for a female fly, as eggs are vulnerable and larvae have limited motility. Here, we show that many natural genotypes of D. melanogaster prefer to lay eggs near nutritious substrate, rather than in nutritious substrate. These preferences are highly polymorphic in both degree and direction, with considerable heritability (0.488) and evolvability
Development and application of bivariate 2D-EMD for the analysis of instantaneous flow structures and cycle-to-cycle variations of in-cylinder flow
International audienceThe bivariate two dimensional empirical mode decomposition (Bivariate 2D-EMD) is extended to estimate the turbulent fluctuations and to identify cycle-to-cycle variations (CCV) of in-cylinder flow. The Bivariate 2D-EMD is an adaptive approach that is not restricted by statistical convergence criterion, hence it can be used for analyzing the nonlinear and non-stationary phenomena. The methodology is applied to a high-speed PIV dataset that measures the velocity field within the tumble symmetry plane of an optically accessible engine. The instantaneous velocity field is decomposed into a finite number of 2D spatial modes. Based on energy considerations, the in-cylinder flow large-scale organized motion is separated from turbulent fluctuations. This study is focused on the second half of the compression stroke. For most of the cycles, the maximum of turbulent fluctuations is located between 50 and 30 crank angle degrees before top dead center (TDC). In regards to the phase-averaged velocity field, the contribution of CCV to the fluctuating kinetic energy is approximately 55% near TDC
