    Asymptotic expansion of the solution of the steady Stokes equation with variable viscosity in a two-dimensional tube structure

    The Stokes equation with the varying viscosity is considered in a thin tube structure, i.e. in a connected union of thin rectangles with heights of order ε<<1\varepsilon<<1 and with bases of order 1 with smoothened boundary. An asymptotic expansion of the solution is constructed: it contains some Poiseuille type flows in the channels (rectangles) with some boundary layers correctors in the neighborhoods of the bifurcations of the channels. The estimates for the difference of the exact solution and its asymptotic approximation are proved.Comment: 22 pages, 20 figure

Hoy en día estos modelos pueden ser utilizados para identificar las variables predictoras de la distribución de las especies y para predicciones de distribución en otros diferentes escenarios. E. oleracea es una palma cespitosa que forma grupos de muchos tallos los cuales son soportados por una masa de raíces epigeas con neumatóforos. Alcanza alturas hasta de 25m y diámetros hasta de 18cm. Sus hojas son pinnadas, hasta 12, de 1-4m de longitud y 0.75-1.10m de ancho. Los frutos son globosos con epicarpio verde cuando inmaduro a morado - negro en la madurez. E. oleracea es también conocida como palmera do acaí o palma de naidí y presenta una gran importancia tanto ecológica, por ser una especie de primeros estados sucesionales, como económica pues las poblaciones ribereñas de los ríos extraen de ella el fruto y el palmito como fuente primaria de ingresos. El objetivo principal de la investigación fue estimar el área de distribución potencial de E. oleracea a partir de la teoría del nicho ecológico contribuyendo al entendimiento de las relaciones entre su distribución y la condiciones ambientales que delimitan su área de ocurrencia además de estimar y comprender la fuerza explicativa de las variables ambientales

    Long-term magnetic field stability of Vega

    We present new spectropolarimetric observations of the normal A-type star Vega, obtained during the summer of 2010 with NARVAL at T\'elescope Bernard Lyot (Pic du Midi Observatory). This new time-series is constituted of 615 spectra collected over 6 different nights. We use the Least-Square-Deconvolution technique to compute, from each spectrum, a mean line profile with a signal-to-noise ratio close to 20,000. After averaging all 615 polarized observations, we detect a circularly polarized Zeeman signature consistent in shape and amplitude with the signatures previously reported from our observations of 2008 and 2009. The surface magnetic geometry of the star, reconstructed using the technique of Zeeman-Doppler Imaging, agrees with the maps obtained in 2008 and 2009, showing that most recognizable features of the photospheric field of Vega are only weakly distorted by large-scale surface flows (differential rotation or meridional circulation).Comment: Proceedings of the conference "Stellar polarimetry: from birth to death", 2011 Jun 27-30, Madiso

    Low latency via redundancy

    Low latency is critical for interactive networked applications. But while we know how to scale systems to increase capacity, reducing latency --- especially the tail of the latency distribution --- can be much more difficult. In this paper, we argue that the use of redundancy is an effective way to convert extra capacity into reduced latency. By initiating redundant operations across diverse resources and using the first result which completes, redundancy improves a system's latency even under exceptional conditions. We study the tradeoff with added system utilization, characterizing the situations in which replicating all tasks reduces mean latency. We then demonstrate empirically that replicating all operations can result in significant mean and tail latency reduction in real-world systems including DNS queries, database servers, and packet forwarding within networks

    The detrimental effect of spontaneous emission in quantum free electron lasers : a discrete Wigner model

    We study the spontaneous emission in high-gain free-electron lasers operating in the quantum regime and its detrimental effect on coherent emission. A quantum model describing the coherent and spontaneous emission in free electron lasers has been recently proposed and investigated [G. R. M. Robb and R. Bonifacio, Phys. Plasmas 19, 073101 (2012)]. The model is based on a Wigner distribution describing the electron beam dynamics, coupled to Maxwell equations for the emitted radiation field. Here, we rephrase the model in a more rigorous way, considering a discrete Wigner distribution defined for a periodic space coordinate for which the electron momentum is discrete. From its numerical solution, we find good agreement with the approximate continuous model. In the quantum regime of the free-electron laser, we obtain a simple density matrix equation for two momentum states, where the role of the spontaneous emission has a clear interpretation in terms of coherence decay and population transfer

    Lysosomal trafficking functions of mucolipin-1 in murine macrophages

    BACKGROUND:Mucolipidosis Type IV is currently characterized as a lysosomal storage disorder with defects that include corneal clouding, achlorhydria and psychomotor retardation. MCOLN1, the gene responsible for this disease, encodes the protein mucolipin-1 that belongs to the "Transient Receptor Potential" family of proteins and has been shown to function as a non-selective cation channel whose activity is modulated by pH. Two cell biological defects that have been described in MLIV fibroblasts are a hyperacidification of lysosomes and a delay in the exit of lipids from lysosomes.RESULTS:We show that mucolipin-1 localizes to lysosomal compartments in RAW264.7 mouse macrophages that show subcompartmental accumulations of endocytosed molecules. Using stable RNAi clones, we show that mucolipin-1 is required for the exit of lipids from these compartments, for the transport of endocytosed molecules to terminal lysosomes, and for the transport of the Major Histocompatibility Complex II to the plasma membrane.CONCLUSION:Mucolipin-1 functions in the efficient exit of molecules, destined for various cellular organelles, from lysosomal compartments.This item is part of the UA Faculty Publications collection.     Exploring nonlinear intra-annual growth dynamics in Fagus sylvatica L. trees at the Italian ICP-forests level II network

    The European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is a widely distributed tree species across Europe, highly sensitive to climate change and global warming. This study illustrates results of a 5-year monitoring time period from eight sites of the ICP-Forests Level II (intensive monitoring network) along the Italian latitudinal gradient. The tree-level relationship between tree growth dynamics and environmental factors, including seasonal climate fluctuations were investigated by means of tree-level Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs). Model results revealed that climate was responsible for just a portion of the variability in beech growth dynamics. Even if climatic predictors were highly significant in almost all sites, the model explained nearly 30% of the total variance (with just a maximum value of 71.6%), leaving the remaining variance unexplained and likely connected with forest management trajectories applied to each site (e.g., aged coppice and fully grown high forest). Climate change scenarios were then applied to predict site-specific future responses. By applying climate change scenarios, it was predicted that central and northern Italy would face similar climatic conditions to those currently detected at southern latitudes. A special case study was represented by VEN1 plot (Veneto, Northern Italy) whose current and future climate regimes were grouped in a unique and separated cluster

    Signatures of Star-planet interactions

    Planets interact with their host stars through gravity, radiation and magnetic fields, and for those giant planets that orbit their stars within \sim10 stellar radii (\sim0.1 AU for a sun-like star), star-planet interactions (SPI) are observable with a wide variety of photometric, spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric studies. At such close distances, the planet orbits within the sub-alfv\'enic radius of the star in which the transfer of energy and angular momentum between the two bodies is particularly efficient. The magnetic interactions appear as enhanced stellar activity modulated by the planet as it orbits the star rather than only by stellar rotation. These SPI effects are informative for the study of the internal dynamics and atmospheric evolution of exoplanets. The nature of magnetic SPI is modeled to be strongly affected by both the stellar and planetary magnetic fields, possibly influencing the magnetic activity of both, as well as affecting the irradiation and even the migration of the planet and rotational evolution of the star. As phase-resolved observational techniques are applied to a large statistical sample of hot Jupiter systems, extensions to other tightly orbiting stellar systems, such as smaller planets close to M dwarfs become possible. In these systems, star-planet separations of tens of stellar radii begin to coincide with the radiative habitable zone where planetary magnetic fields are likely a necessary condition for surface habitability.Comment: Accepted for publication in the handbook of exoplanet

    Uncertainty-Aware Imitation Learning using Kernelized Movement Primitives

    During the past few years, probabilistic approaches to imitation learning have earned a relevant place in the literature. One of their most prominent features, in addition to extracting a mean trajectory from task demonstrations, is that they provide a variance estimation. The intuitive meaning of this variance, however, changes across different techniques, indicating either variability or uncertainty. In this paper we leverage kernelized movement primitives (KMP) to provide a new perspective on imitation learning by predicting variability, correlations and uncertainty about robot actions. This rich set of information is used in combination with optimal controller fusion to learn actions from data, with two main advantages: i) robots become safe when uncertain about their actions and ii) they are able to leverage partial demonstrations, given as elementary sub-tasks, to optimally perform a higher level, more complex task. We showcase our approach in a painting task, where a human user and a KUKA robot collaborate to paint a wooden board. The task is divided into two sub-tasks and we show that using our approach the robot becomes compliant (hence safe) outside the training regions and executes the two sub-tasks with optimal gains.Comment: Submitted to IROS1

    Comparison Between Different Algorithms for Maximum PPT in Photovoltaic Systems and its Implementation on Microcontroller

    This paper presents the practical implementation of fuzzy logic control algorithm for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in photovoltaic (PV) systems. A prototyping PV system is implemented with a boost DC-DC converter using Microchip® PIC18F452 microcontroller to execute the MPPT algorithms. The common algorithms like perturbation and observation (P&amp;O) and incremental conductance (IncCon.) as well as the proposed fuzzy logic control algorithm are implemented and tested under different conditions, and the test results are analyzed and compared. The results show that the proposed fuzzy logic control algorithm can give better performance than perturbation and observation and incremental conductance algorithms.
