    Lane-formation vs. cluster-formation in two dimensional square-shoulder systems: A genetic algorithm approach

    Introducing genetic algorithms as a reliable and efficient tool to find ordered equilibrium structures, we predict minimum energy configurations of the square shoulder system for different values of corona width λ\lambda. Varying systematically the pressure for different values of λ\lambda we obtain complete sequences of minimum energy configurations which provide a deeper understanding of the system's strategies to arrange particles in an energetically optimized fashion, leading to the competing self-assembly scenarios of cluster-formation vs. lane-formation.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    Influence of Hot Band Annealing on Cold-Rolled Microstructure and Recrystallization in AA 6016

    The influence of an intermediate heat treatment at the end of hot rolling and before cold rolling on Cube texture formation during the final solution annealing of AA 6016 is investigated. Three hot bands with different initial grain sizes and textures are considered: the first one without annealing before cold rolling, while the other two hot bands are heat treated at 540 °C for 1 hour in air before being cold rolled. One of the heat-treated hot bands was left to cool down in air and the other inside the furnace. Electron-backscatter diffraction (EBSD) maps of the cold-rolled specimens and crystal plasticity simulations show no difference in the amount of Cube remaining in the microstructure at the end of cold rolling for all three specimens. The initial grain size of the hot band has no influence on the Cube texture fraction left in the microstructure at the end of cold rolling for thickness reductions higher than 65 pct. Nevertheless, the grain size of the hot band affects the shape and distribution of the Cube grains left in the microstructure and the kernel average misorientation in the cold-rolled specimens. Moreover, the heat treatment decreases the intensity of the beta fiber components (Brass, Copper, and S) in the hot band and promotes the formation of a cold-rolled microstructure with a low kernel average misorientation. Both these factors lower the probability of preferential Cube nucleation during solution annealing and keep the Cube volume fraction after recrystallization below 10 pct, while it reaches 25 pct without intermediate annealing

    Tracking positive and negative effects of inequality on long-run growth

    Despite extensive research controversy remains on the effects of income inequality on economic growth. The literature proposes several transmission channels through which these effects may occur and even the existence of two different forms of inequality. However, empirical studies have not generally distinguished between these channels, nor have they considered the two forms of inequality and their separate effects on growth. In this paper we review the theory and the evidence of the transmission channels through which inequality influences growth. We contribute to the literature by using a system of recursive equations, following a control function approach, to empirically assess the relevance of these channels and to differentiate between two forms of inequality.     Group Decisions in Biodiversity Conservation: Implications from Game Theory

This paper shows how game theory may be used to inform group decisions in biodiversity conservation scenarios by modeling conflicts between stakeholders to identify Pareto–inefficient Nash equilibria. These are cases in which each agent pursuing individual self–interest leads to a worse outcome for all, relative to other feasible outcomes. Three case studies from biodiversity conservation contexts showing this feature are modeled to demonstrate how game–theoretical representation can inform group decision-making.–agent fish and coral conservation scenario from the Philippines. In each case there is reason to believe that traditional mechanism–design solutions that appeal to material incentives may be inadequate, and the game–theoretical analysis recommends a resumption of further deliberation between agents and the initiation of trust—and confidence—building measures. that formal mechanism–design solutions may backfire in certain cases.
