Generating Functions, Polynomials and Vortices with Alternating Signs in Bose-Einstein Condensates
In this work, we construct suitable generating functions for vortices of
alternating signs in the realm of Bose-Einstein condensates. In addition to the
vortex-vortex interaction included in earlier fluid dynamics constructions of
such functions, the vortices here precess around the center of the trap. This
results in the generating functions of the vortices of positive charge and of
negative charge satisfying a modified, so-called, Tkachenko differential
equation. From that equation, we reconstruct collinear few-vortex equilibria
obtained in earlier work, as well as extend them to larger numbers of vortices.
Moreover, particular moment conditions can be derived e.g. about the sum of the
squared locations of the vortices for arbitrary vortex numbers. Furthermore,
the relevant differential equation can be generalized appropriately in the
two-dimensional complex plane and allows the construction e.g. of polygonal
vortex ring and multi-ring configurations, as well as ones with rings
surrounding a vortex at the center that are again connected to earlier

Composing Scalable Nonlinear Algebraic Solvers
Most efficient linear solvers use composable algorithmic components, with the
most common model being the combination of a Krylov accelerator and one or more
preconditioners. A similar set of concepts may be used for nonlinear algebraic
systems, where nonlinear composition of different nonlinear solvers may
significantly improve the time to solution. We describe the basic concepts of
nonlinear composition and preconditioning and present a number of solvers
applicable to nonlinear partial differential equations. We have developed a
software framework in order to easily explore the possible combinations of
solvers. We show that the performance gains from using composed solvers can be
substantial compared with gains from standard Newton-Krylov methods.Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures, 13 table
Challenges and implications of routine depression screening for depression in chronic disease and multimorbidity: a cross sectional study
<b>Background</b> Depression screening in chronic disease is advocated but its impact on routine practice is uncertain. We examine the effects of a programme of incentivised depression screening in chronic disease within a UK primary care setting.<p></p>
<b>Methods and Findings</b> Cross sectional analysis of anonymised, routinely collected data (for 2008-9) from family practices in Scotland serving a population of circa 1.8 million. Patients registered in primary care with at least one of three chronic diseases, coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke, underwent incentivised depression screening using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score (HADS). <p></p>
125143 patients were identified with at least one chronic disease. 10670 (8.5%) were under treatment for depression and exempt from screening. Of the remaining, HADS were recorded for 35537 (31.1%) patients. 7080 (19.9% of screened) had raised HADS (≥8); the majority had indications of mild depression with a HADS between 8 and 10. Over 6 months, 572 (8%) of those with a raised HADS (≥8) were initiated on antidepressants, while 696 (2.4%) patients with a normal HADS (<8) were also initiated on antidepressants (relative risk of antidepressant initiation with raised HADS 3.3 (CI 2.97-3.67), p value <0.0001). Of those with multimorbidity who were screened, 24.3% had a raised HADS (≥8). A raised HADS was more likely in females, socioeconomically deprived, multimorbid or younger (18-44) individuals. Females and 45-64 years old were more likely to receive antidepressants.<p></p>
<b>Limitations</b> – retrospective study of routinely collected data.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions </b> Despite incentivisation, only minority of patients underwent depression screening, suggesting that systematic depression screening in chronic disease can be difficult to achieve in routine practice. Targeting those at greatest risk such as the multimorbid or using simpler screening methods may be more effective. Raised HADS was associated with a higher number of new antidepressant prescriptions which has significant resource implications. The clinical benefits of such screening remain uncertain and merit investigation
Laser radiation pressure slowing of a molecular beam
There is substantial interest in producing samples of ultracold molecules for
possible applications in quantum computation, quantum simulation of condensed
matter systems, precision measurements, controlled chemistry, and high
precision spectroscopy. A crucial step to obtaining large samples of ultracold,
trapped molecules is developing a means to bridge the gap between typical
molecular source velocities (~150-600 m/s) and velocities for which trap
loading or confinement is possible (~5-20 m/s). Here we show deceleration of a
beam of neutral strontium monofluoride (SrF) molecules using radiative force.
Under certain conditions, the deceleration results in a substantial flux of
molecules with velocities <50 m/s. The observed slowing, from ~140 m/s,
corresponds to scattering ~10000 photons. We also observe longitudinal velocity
compression under different conditions. Combined with molecular laser cooling
techniques, this lays the groundwork to create slow and cold molecular beams

Frameshifting in gene 10 of bacteriophage T7
Journal ArticleGene 10 of bacteriophage T7, which encodes the most abundant capsid protein, has two products: a major product, 10A (36 kDa), and a minor product, 10B (41 kDa). 10B is produced by frameshifting into the -1 frame near the end of the 10A coding frame and is incorporated into the capsid. The frameshift occurs at a frequency of about 10% and is conserved in bacteriophage T3. This study shows that sequences important to frameshifting include the originally proposed frameshift site, consisting of overlapping phenylalanine codons and the 3' noncoding region that includes the transcriptional terminator over 200 bases downstream of the frameshift site. The frameshift occurs at the overlapping phenylalanine codons as determined from peptide sequencing data. Complementation studies show that there is only a very weak phenotype associated with phage infections in which there is no 10A frameshifting. Capsids from such infections are devoid of 10B and are as stable as wild-type capsids
RISK PERCEPTIONS AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSES: PRODUCER-GENERATED HYPOTHESES FOR RISK MODELING
Farm level risk analyses have used price and yield variability almost exclusively to represent risk. Results from a survey of 149 agricultural producers in 12 states indicate that producers consider a broader range of sources of variability in their operations. Significant differences exist among categories with respect to the importance of the sources of variability in crop and livestock production. Producers also used a variety of management responses to variability. There were significant difference among categories in the importance given to particular responses and their use of them. The effect of caffeine mouth rinse on self-paced cycling performance
The aim of the study was to determine whether caffeine mouth rinse would improve 30 min self-paced cycling trial. Twelve healthy active males (age 20.5±0.7 years, mass 87.4±18.3 kg) volunteered for the study. They attended the laboratory on 3 separate occasions performing a 30 min self-paced cycling trial. On one occasion water was given as a mouth rinse for 5 s (PLA), on another occasion a 6.4% maltodextrin (CHO) solution was given for 5 s and finally a caffeine solution (containing 32 mg of caffeine dissolved in 125 ml water; CAF) was given for 5 s. Distance cycled, heart rate, ratings of perceived exertion, cadence, speed and power output were recorded throughout all trials. Distance cycled during the CAF mouth rinse trial (16.2±2.8 km) was significantly greater compared to PLA trial (14.9±2.6 km). There was no difference between CHO and CAF trials (P=0.89). Cadence, power and velocity were significantly greater during the CAF trial compared to both PLA and CHO (P0.05). Bifidobacterium breve with α-Linolenic Acid and Linoleic Acid Alters Fatty Acid Metabolism in the Maternal Separation Model of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
peer-reviewedThe aim of this study was to compare the impact of dietary supplementation with a Bifidobacterium breve strain together with linoleic acid & α-linolenic acid, for 7 weeks, on colonic sensitivity and fatty acid metabolism in rats. Maternally separated and non-maternally separated Sprague Dawley rats (n = 15) were orally gavaged with either B. breve DPC6330 (109 microorganisms/day) alone or in combination with 0.5% (w/w) linoleic acid & 0.5% (w/w) α-linolenic acid, daily for 7 weeks and compared with trehalose and bovine serum albumin. Tissue fatty acid composition was assessed by gas-liquid chromatography and visceral hypersensitivity was assessed by colorectal distension. Significant differences in the fatty acid profiles of the non-separated controls and maternally separated controls were observed for α-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid in the liver, oleic acid and eicosenoic acid (c11) in adipose tissue, and for palmitoleic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in serum (p<0.05). Administration of B. breve DPC6330 to MS rats significantly increased palmitoleic acid, arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in the liver, eicosenoic acid (c11) in adipose tissue and palmitoleic acid in the prefrontal cortex (p<0.05), whereas feeding B. breve DPC6330 to non separated rats significantly increased eicosapentaenoic acid and docosapentaenoic acid in serum (p<0.05) compared with the NS un-supplemented controls. Administration of B. breve DPC6330 in combination with linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid to maternally separated rats significantly increased docosapentaenoic acid in the serum (p<0.01) and α-linolenic acid in adipose tissue (p<0.001), whereas feeding B. breve DPC6330 with fatty acid supplementation to non-separated rats significantly increased liver and serum docosapentaenoic acid (p<0.05), and α-linolenic acid in adipose tissue (p<0.001). B. breve DPC6330 influenced host fatty acid metabolism. Administration of B. breve DPC6330 to maternally separated rats significantly modified the palmitoleic acid, arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid contents in tissues.
