High-friction mechanical grips
Plasma-arc spraying offers method of preparing required surface at greatly reduced cost. Coarse-grained, tungsten carbide bonded-nickel coating is applied by spraying. Coating has been used successfully on wedge-shaped mechanical test grips
Lightning induced currents in aircraft wiring using low level injection techniques
Various techniques were studied to predict the transient current induced into aircraft wiring bundles as a result of an aircraft lightning strike. A series of aircraft measurements were carried out together with a theoretical analysis using computer modeling. These tests were applied to various aircraft and also to specially constructed cylinders installed within coaxial return conductor systems. Low level swept frequency CW (carrier waves), low level transient and high level transient injection tests were applied to the aircraft and cylinders. Measurements were made to determine the transfer function between the aircraft drive current and the resulting skin currents and currents induced on the internal wiring. The full threat lightning induced transient currents were extrapolated from the low level data using Fourier transform techniques. The aircraft and cylinders used were constructed from both metallic and CFC (carbon fiber composite) materials. The results show the pulse stretching phenomenon which occurs for CFC materials due to the diffusion of the lightning current through carbon fiber materials. Accretion Disk Temperatures of QSOs: Constraints from the Emission Lines
QSO emission-line spectra are compared to predictions based on theoretical
ionizing continua of accretion disks. Observed line intensities do not show the
expected trend of higher ionization with higher accretion disk temperature as
derived from the black hole mass and accretion rate. This suggests that, at
least for accretion rates close to the Eddington limit, the inner disk does not
reach temperatures as high as expected from standard disk theory. Modified
radial temperature profiles, taking account of winds or advection in the inner
disk, achieve better agreement with observation. This conclusion agrees with an
earlier study of QSO continuum colors as a function of disk temperature. The
emission lines of radio-detected and radio-undetected sources show different

The investigation of particle acceleration in colliding-wind massive binaries with SIMBOL-X
An increasing number of early-type (O and Wolf-Rayet) colliding wind binaries
(CWBs) is known to accelerate particles up to relativistic energies. In this
context, non-thermal emission processes such as inverse Compton (IC) scattering
are expected to produce a high energy spectrum, in addition to the strong
thermal emission from the shock-heated plasma. SIMBOL-X will be the ideal
observatory to investigate the hard X-ray spectrum (above 10 keV) of these
systems, i.e. where it is no longer dominated by the thermal emission. Such
observations are strongly needed to constrain the models aimed at understanding
the physics of particle acceleration in CWB. Such systems are important
laboratories for investigating the underlying physics of particle acceleration
at high Mach number shocks, and probe a different region of parameter space

Signalment risk factors for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (Alabama rot) in dogs in the UK
Seasonal outbreaks of cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) have been reported annually in UK dogs since 2012, yet the aetiology of the disease remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to explore whether any breeds had an increased or decreased risk of being diagnosed with CRGV, and to report on age and sex distributions of CRGV cases occurring in the UK. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare 101 dogs diagnosed with CRGV between November 2012 and May 2017 with a denominator population of 446,453 dogs from the VetCompass database. Two Kennel Club breed groups—hounds (odds ratio (OR) 10.68) and gun dogs (OR 9.69)—had the highest risk of being diagnosed with CRGV compared with terriers, while toy dogs were absent from among CRGV cases. Females were more likely to be diagnosed with CRGV (OR 1.51) as were neutered dogs (OR 3.36). As well as helping veterinarians develop an index of suspicion for the disease, better understanding of the signalment risk factors may assist in the development of causal models for CRGV and help identify the aetiology of the disease
Design considerations for large space electric power systems
As power levels of spacecraft rise to the 50 to 100 kW range, it becomes apparent that low voltage (28 V) dc power distribution and management systems will not operate efficiently at these higher power levels. The concept of transforming a solar array voltage at 150 V dc into a 1000 V ac distribution system operating at 20 kHz is examined. The transformation is accomplished with series-resonant inverter by using a rotary transformer to isolate the solar array from the spacecraft. The power can then be distributed in any desired method such as three phase delta to delta. The distribution voltage can be easily transformed to any desired load voltage and operating frequency. The reasons for the voltage limitations on the solar array due to plasma interactions and the many advantages of a high voltage, high frequency at distribution system are discussed
Regional Climate Trends and Scenarios for the U.S. National Climate Assessment Part 4. Climate of the U.S. Great Plains
This document is one of series of regional climate descriptions designed to provide input that can be used in the development of the National Climate Assessment (NCA). As part of a sustained assessment approach, it is intended that these documents will be updated as new and well-vetted model results are available and as new climate scenario needs become clear. It is also hoped that these documents (and associated data and resources) are of direct benefit to decision makers and communities seeking to use this information in developing adaptation plans.
There are nine reports in this series, one each for eight regions defined by the NCA, and one for the contiguous U.S. The eight NCA regions are the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Great Plains, Northwest, Southwest, Alaska, and Hawai‘i/Pacific Islands.
These documents include a description of the observed historical climate conditions for each region and a set of climate scenarios as plausible futures – these components are described in more detail below.
While the datasets and simulations in these regional climate documents are not, by themselves, new, (they have been previously published in various sources), these documents represent a more complete and targeted synthesis of historical and plausible future climate conditions around the specific regions of the NCA.
There are two components of these descriptions. One component is a description of the historical climate conditions in the region. The other component is a description of the climate conditions associated with two future pathways of greenhouse gas emissions
