The aim of this work was to investigate competence and warmth — the two basic dimensions of social judgment — as dimensions employees use to evaluate their supervisors. A mediation model was tested in which supervisor’s perceived competence and warmth were associated with relevant outcomes (lower burnout, weaker turnover intentions, more frequent citizenship behaviors) through the mediation of affective organizational commitment (AOC). In Study 1, data were collected from employees of a company in the water service sector. In Study 2, participants were financial promoters. In Study 3, the sample included employees from different organizations. As hypothesized, the perception of one’s supervisor as competent (Studies 1-3) and warm (Study 3) was related to employees’ lower burnout, weaker turnover intentions, more frequent prosocial behaviors through the mediation of AOC. Theoretical and practical implications of findings are discussed

Experiential Learning at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy

“Am I ever going to use this in the real world?” is a common question in science and math middle school and high school classrooms. Students taught using experiential learning techniques, however, already know the answer. They learn content by solving real world problems through hands-on activities. In other words, they learn science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) the same way professionals do every day—by doing, sharing, and improving. Experiential learning provides the promise that the U.S. can reverse the trend of students losing interest in STEM subjects during middle school and create life-long learners who apply the scientific thought process to their career path of choice. Learning through experience is not a new concept, but it is essential in STEM classrooms. The United States needs a world-leading STEM workforce and education will determine whether our current students will be able to compete in the global marketplace of the future

Evaluation of the reanalysis wind over the Indian Ocean across the seasonal reversing wind pattern

75-84Present study show the similarity as well as contradictory event among the four different wind data based on monthly, seasonally and annual wind pattern over Indian Ocean. All the four reanalysis wind sources exhibit almost similar trend in their annual as well as monthly average wind pattern, however there is no strong similarity at their peak condition in space and time. The statistical analysis, based on Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and correlation coefficient (R), exhibited that the ECMWF and NCMRWF wind shows comparatively good agreement with the moored buoy data than the NCEP/NCAR and NCEP/CFSR wind under the seasonal reversing wind pattern occurs across the consecutive monsoons
