Determinants of Cognitive Skills Achievement in Mathematics of Elementary Pre-Service Teachers

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to determine the cognitive skills achievement in mathematics of 88 elementary pre-service teachers as basis for improving problem solving and critical thinking. Their cognitive skills achievement in mathematics was analyzed using Piaget’s seven logical operations namely: classification, seriation, logical multiplication, compensation, ratio and proportional thinking, probability thinking, and correlational thinking. This study used descriptive and causal-comparative research design to describe the cognitive skills achievement and to determine the affecting factors. An adopted Test on Logical Operations (TLO) with a total score of 140 points was used. In overall performance, elementary pre-service teachers performed with sufficient understanding in dealing with the TLO. However, in each logical operation, students were found to have insufficient understanding in probability thinking and correlational thinking. Consonant to Piaget’s beliefs towards children of 11 years old and above, results also revealed that majority of the respondents (59.09%) were categorized with skills at the formal level. Moreover, ANOVA and Regression Analysis showed that engagement in recreational activities, educational attainment of the mother and monthly family income significantly influenced and predicted the students’ cognitive skills achievement in mathematics. This study concluded that not all the seven logical operations were completely developed among the respondents and suggested to develop learning activities, environment and materials that would promote development and improvement of various cognitive skills

Give Love With Lovenox: Improving Nurse Education on Lovenox Prophylaxis to Reduce Pulmonary Embolism Risk on the Postpartum Unit

This quality improvement project aims to improve nurse education about Lovenox prophylaxis to reduce the risk of pulmonary emboli – post-discharge – amongst high-risk postpartum women who underwent vaginal and cesarean deliveries on the family baby unit. This project took place in a Family Baby/Postpartum Unit at Hospital SC. This unit has a total of 25 beds with an increased prevalence of pulmonary embolism following cesarean delivery. Nurses were given anonymous pre- and post-survey questionnaires and provided educational sessions with distributed handouts. A unit needs assessment was conducted using the 5 P’s. Out of the 72 nurses on the staff roster, 25 nurses participated in the study (n = 34.7% response rate). All 25 nurses participated throughout the study, allowing greater insight into the nurses’ perspectives. Nurses were given edible incentives after completion of the pre-and post-surveys and education to encourage active participation. We assessed the nurses’ comfort levels and knowledge about the unit’s Lovenox Prophylaxis policy. The surveys revealed a need for an annual Lovenox refresher course. Results showed that most nurses (n= 60%) knew why Lovenox was used in their unit, and (n= 76%) were comfortable administering and monitoring Lovenox but stated they had not had a refresher course since nursing school. Most nurses were open to a Lovenox refresher course. After the education intervention, results showed an improvement in nurse knowledge about the unit’s Lovenox prophylaxis policy and use. Nurses reported benefitting from re-education and disclosed being more inclined to witness patient self-administration more than once before discharge. Improvements in patient medication adherence and reduced risk of PE are to follow. This project helps support the hospital’s initiative to implement Lovenox prevention. Sustainability is dependent on the nurses’ willingness to participate in annual reeducation and training in the Family Baby Unit. Future recommendations should be considered

Dirac Quantization of Two-Dimensional Dilaton Gravity Minimally Coupled to N Massless Scalar Fields

It is shown that the Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger theory on the cylinder can be consistently quantized (using Dirac's approach) without imposing any constraints on the sign of the gravitational coupling constant or the sign (or value) of the cosmological constant. The quantum constraints in terms of the original geometrical variables are also derived

    INTEGRAL timing and localization performance

In this letter we report on the accuracy of the attitude, misalignment, orbit and time correlation which are used to perform scientific analyses of the INTEGRAL data. The boresight attitude during science pointings has an accuracy of 3 arcsec. At the center of the field, the misalignments have been calibrated leading to a location accuracy of 4 to 40 arcsec for the different instruments. The spacecraft position is known within 10 meters. The relative timing between instruments could be reconstructed within 10 microsec and the absolute timing within 40 microsec.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A+A letters, INTEGRAL special issu

Optimal quantum reservoir computing for the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era

Universal fault-tolerant quantum computers require millions of qubits with low error rates. Since this technology is years ahead, noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computation is receiving tremendous interest. In this setup, quantum reservoir computing is a relevant machine learning algorithm. Its simplicity of training and implementation allows to perform challenging computations on today's available machines. In this Letter, we provide a criterion to select optimal quantum reservoirs, requiring few and simple gates. Our findings demonstrate that they render better results than other commonly used models with significantly less gates and also provide insight on the theoretical gap between quantum reservoir computing and the theory of quantum states' complexit
