Exact Solution of Return Hysteresis Loops in One Dimensional Random Field Ising Model at Zero Temperature
Minor hysteresis loops within the main loop are obtained analytically and
exactly in the one-dimensional ferromagnetic random field Ising-model at zero
temperature. Numerical simulations of the model show excellent agreement with
the analytical results
ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF THE COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
Colleges of veterinary medicine are often asked to provide evidence of the economic impacts of their activities. This report presents methods for evaluating a veterinary college and applies them to the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Short-run impacts on income and employment are assessed as well as the long-run benefits of the research, extension, teaching, and clinical services of the college.Public Economics,
Nonlinear Interactions Between Gravitational Radiation and Modified Alfven Modes in Astrophysical Dusty Plasmas
We present an investigation of nonlinear interactions between Gravitational
Radiation and modified Alfv\'{e}n modes in astrophysical dusty plasmas.
Assuming that stationary charged dust grains form neutralizing background in an
electron-ion-dust plasma, we obtain the three wave coupling coefficients, and
calculate the growth rates for parametrically coupled gravitational radiation
and modified Alfv\'{e}n-Rao modes. The threshold value of the gravitational
wave amplitude associated with convective stabilization is particularly small
if the gravitational frequency is close to twice the modified Alfv\'en
wave-frequency. The implication of our results to astrophysical dusty plasmas
is discussed.Comment: A few typos corrected. Published in Phys. Rev.
Advanced resin systems and 3D textile preforms for low cost composite structures
Advanced resin systems and 3D textile preforms are being evaluated at Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company (LASC) under NASA's Advanced Composites Technology (ACT) Program. This work is aimed towards the development of low-cost, damage-tolerant composite fuselage structures. Resin systems for resin transfer molding and powder epoxy towpreg materials are being evaluated for processability, performance and cost. Three developmental epoxy resin systems for resin transfer molding (RTM) and three resin systems for powder towpregging are being investigated. Various 3D textile preform architectures using advanced weaving and braiding processes are also being evaluated. Trials are being conducted with powdered towpreg, in 2D weaving and 3D braiding processes for their textile processability and their potential for fabrication in 'net shape' fuselage structures. The progress in advanced resin screening and textile preform development is reviewed here
Bound states near a moving charge in a quantum plasma
It is investigated how the shielding of a moving point charge in a
one-component fully degenerate fermion plasma affects the bound states near the
charge at velocities smaller than the Fermi one. The shielding is accounted for
by using the Lindhard dielectric function, and the resulting potential is
substituted into the Schr\"odinger equation in order to obtain the energy
levels. Their number and values are shown to be primarily determined by the
value of the charge and the quantum plasma coupling parameter, while the main
effect of the motion is to split certain energy levels. This provides a link
between quantum plasma theory and possible measurements of spectra of ions
passing through solids.Comment: Published in EPL, see

Quantum Vacuum Experiments Using High Intensity Lasers
The quantum vacuum constitutes a fascinating medium of study, in particular
since near-future laser facilities will be able to probe the nonlinear nature
of this vacuum. There has been a large number of proposed tests of the
low-energy, high intensity regime of quantum electrodynamics (QED) where the
nonlinear aspects of the electromagnetic vacuum comes into play, and we will
here give a short description of some of these. Such studies can shed light,
not only on the validity of QED, but also on certain aspects of nonperturbative
effects, and thus also give insights for quantum field theories in general.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figur
Persistence in One-dimensional Ising Models with Parallel Dynamics
We study persistence in one-dimensional ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic
nearest-neighbor Ising models with parallel dynamics. The probability P(t) that
a given spin has not flipped up to time t, when the system evolves from an
initial random configuration, decays as P(t) \sim 1/t^theta_p with theta_p
\simeq 0.75 numerically. A mapping to the dynamics of two decoupled A+A \to 0
models yields theta_p = 3/4 exactly. A finite size scaling analysis clarifies
the nature of dynamical scaling in the distribution of persistent sites
obtained under this dynamics.Comment: 5 pages Latex file, 3 postscript figures, to appear in Phys Rev.
Broadening the high sensitivity range of squeezing-assisted interferometers by means of two-channel detection
For a squeezing-enhanced linear (so-called SU(2)) interferometer, we theoretically investigate the possibility to broaden the phase range of sub-shot-noise sensitivity. We show that this goal can be achieved by implementing detection in both output ports, with the optimal combination of the detectors outputs. With this modification, the interferometer has the phase sensitivity independent of the interferometer operation point and, similar to the standard dark port regime, is not affected by the laser technical (excess) noise. Provided that each detector is preceded by a phase-sensitive amplifier, this sensitivity could be also tolerant to the detection loss
