Geddes, New York, 1829-1935: Letters of George Owens

Family papers are among the most telling sources of New York State history. The Geddes letters introduced by Richard G. Case and printed below are part of such a collection. With more than a dozen other such sets of papers originating with specific New York families, they provide researchers in state history with many details of daily life in varying strata of an earlier society

Sport Fans\u27 Consumption Behaviors Following the COVID-19 Pandemic and Return to In-Person Spectating

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present investigation was to examine consumption of sporting events after sport leagues returned from the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample of 329 college-aged sport fans were recruited for the study. Participants were administered measures to assess their sport fandom, sport fandom spectator identification, sport rivalry fan perception, and behavioral consumption of sport. Data was obtained between October 2020 to January 2021 as sport leagues returned to play. Results from the current study indicated that current sport consumption is at a similar level as it was pre-pandemic. However, the methods of consumption were inconsistent. Participants in the present investigation stated they were watching sports on television less than they were before the pandemic. Sport fans also indicated they were attending more games in person. Sport fandom was also the strongest predictor of sport-consumption behavior. Team identification and rivalry also accounted for modest variations of consumption behaviors. Future studies could explore future levels of sport fans in person attendance as sport leagues continue to return from COVID-19. Additionally, future work could explore other conditions in which team sport fandom is a strong predictor of sport consumption behaviors

Food Habits of the Red Fox in Nebraska

Food habits of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Nebraska were deter· mined by analysis of 234 fox stomachs obtained from fur dealers during October 1978 through February 1979. Mammals were found most frequently (84%) and constituted the majority (77.4%) of the volume of food items. Cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus) and jack· rabbits (Lepus sp.) were the most important items consumed based on frequency of occurrence (45.8%) and volume (49.2%). Remains of birds were difficult to identify, but ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) occurred in 6.9% of the stomachs and comprised 8.4% of the volume of items consumed. Male foxes had a higher volume of rabbits (55.6%) in their stomachs than did females (39.3%), whereas females had a higher volume (24.6%) of mice and voles than did males (14.6%). Remains of livestock and poultry in fox stomachs rarely were found (2.6%) and constituted only about 1% of the volume of the foxes\u27 diet. Game animals comprised 62.5% of the volume of the foxes\u27 diet

Monitoring the Low-Energy Gamma-Ray Sky Using Earth Occultation with GLAST GBM

Long term all-sky monitoring of the 20 keV – 2 MeV gamma-ray sky using the Earth occultation technique was demonstrated by the BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The principles and techniques used for the development of an end-to-end earth occultation data analysis system for BATSE can be extended to the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM), resulting in multiband light curves and time-resolved spectra in the energy range 8 keV to above 1 MeV for known gamma-ray sources and transient outbursts, as well as the discovery of new sources of gamma-ray emission. In this paper we describe the application of the technique to the GBM. We also present the expected sensitivity for the GBM

A knowledge-based approach to configuration layout, justification, and documentation

The design, development, and implementation is described of a prototype expert system which could aid designers and system engineers in the placement of racks aboard modules on Space Station Freedom. This type of problem is relevant to any program with multiple constraints and requirements demanding solutions which minimize usage of limited resources. This process is generally performed by a single, highly experienced engineer who integrates all the diverse mission requirements and limitations, and develops an overall technical solution which meets program and system requirements with minimal cost, weight, volume, power, etc. This system architect performs an intellectual integration process in which the underlying design rationale is often not fully documented. This is a situation which lends itself to an expert system solution for enhanced consistency, thoroughness, documentation, and change assessment capabilities

    Vlasov Equation In Magnetic Field

The linearized Vlasov equation for a plasma system in a uniform magnetic field and the corresponding linear Vlasov operator are studied. The spectrum and the corresponding eigenfunctions of the Vlasov operator are found. The spectrum of this operator consists of two parts: one is continuous and real; the other is discrete and complex. Interestingly, the real eigenvalues are infinitely degenerate, which causes difficulty solving this initial value problem by using the conventional eigenfunction expansion method. Finally, the Vlasov equation is solved by the resolvent method.Comment: 15 page
