    Resonance Contributions to η\eta Photoproduction on Protons Found Using Dispersion Relations and an Isobar Model

    The contributions of the resonances D13(1520)D_{13}(1520), S11(1535)S_{11}(1535), S11(1650)S_{11}(1650), D15(1675)D_{15}(1675), F15(1680)F_{15}(1680), D13(1700)D_{13}(1700), P11(1710)P_{11}(1710), P13(1720)P_{13}(1720) to γp→ηp\gamma p\to \eta p are found from the data on cross sections, beam and target asymmetries using two approaches: fixed-t dispersion relations and an isobar model. Utilization of the two approaches and comparison of the results obtained with different parametrizations of the resonance contributions allowed us to make conclusions about the model-dependence of these contributions. We conclude that the results for the contributions of the resonances D13(1520)D_{13}(1520), S11(1535)S_{11}(1535), F15(1680)F_{15}(1680) to corresponding multipole amplitudes are stable. With this the results for D13(1520)D_{13}(1520) and F15(1680)F_{15}(1680), combined with their PDG photoexcitation helicity amplitudes, allowed us to find the branching ratios Br(D13(1520)→ηN)=0.05±0.02Br (D_{13}(1520)\to \eta N)=0.05\pm 0.02%, Br(F15(1680)→ηN)=0.16±0.04Br (F_{15}(1680)\to \eta N)=0.16\pm0.04% which have significantly better accuracy than the PDG data. The total Breit-Wigner width of the S11(1535)S_{11}(1535) is model-dependent, we have obtained Γ(S11(1520))=142MeV\Gamma (S_{11}(1520))=142 MeV and 195MeV195 MeV using dispersion relations and the isobar model, respectively. The results for the S11(1650)S_{11}(1650), D15(1675)D_{15}(1675), P11(1710)P_{11}(1710), P13(1720)P_{13}(1720) are model dependent, only the signs and orders of magnitude of their contributions to multipole amplitudes are determined. The results for the D13(1700)D_{13}(1700) are strongly model-dependent.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figure

    Primakoff effect in eta-photoproduction off protons

    We analyse data on forward eta-meson photoproduction off a proton target and extract the eta to gamma gamma decay width utilizing the Primakoff effect. The hadronic amplitude that enters into our analysis is strongly constrained because it is fixed from a global fit to available gamma p to p eta data for differential cross sections and polarizations. We compare our results with present information on the two-photon eta-decay from the literature.     Obesity-related perivascular adipose tissue damage is reversed by sustained weight loss in the rat

    Objective – Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) exerts an anticontractile effect in response to various vasoconstrictor agonists and this is lost in obesity. A recent study reported that bariatric surgery reverses the damaging effects of obesity on PVAT function. However, PVAT function has not been characterised following weight loss induced by caloric restriction, which is often the first line treatment for obesity. Approach and Results – Contractility studies were performed using wire myography on small mesenteric arteries with and without PVAT from control, diet-induced obese, calorie restricted and sustained weight loss rats. Changes in the PVAT environment were assessed using immunohistochemistry. PVAT from healthy animals elicited an anticontractile effect in response to norepinephrine. This was abolished in diet-induced obesity through a mechanism involving increased local TNFα and reduced nitric oxide bioavailability within PVAT. Sustained weight loss led to improvement in PVAT function associated with restoration of adipocyte size, reduced TNFα and increased nitric oxide synthase function. This was associated with reversal of obesity-induced hypertension and normalisation of plasma adipokine levels, including leptin and insulin. Conclusions – We have shown that diet-induced weight loss reverses obesity-induced PVAT damage through a mechanism involving reduced inflammation and increased nitric oxide synthase activity within PVAT. These data reveal inflammation and nitric oxide synthase, particularly eNOS, as potential targets for the treatment of PVAT dysfunction associated with obesity and the metabolic syndrome

    Measurement of the Cross Section Asymmetry of the Reaction gp-->pi0p in the Resonance Energy Region Eg = 0.5 - 1.1 GeV

    The cross section asymmetry Sigma has been measured for the photoproduction of pi0-mesons off protons, using polarized photons in the energy range Eg = 0.5 - 1.1 GeV. The CM angular coverage is Theta = 85 - 125 deg with energy and angle steps of 25 MeV and 5 deg, respectively. The obtained Sigma data, which cover the second and third resonance regions, are compared with existing experimental data and recent phenomenological analyses. The influence of these measurements on such analyses is also considered

    Estimation of State-of-Charge and Capacity of Used Lithium-Ion Cells

    We describe an approach to estimate state-of-charge and faded capacity of cobalt-based lithium-ion cell based on timedomain analysis of a short-term transient. This approach requires a relatively short-duration test and is suitable for repurposing cells for less demanding applications. The successful estimation requires previous characterization of the cells for the given family because lithium ion chemistries differ significantly. Two algorithms were considered for estimation of unknown state-of-charge and capacity: Bayesian inference and boosted regression trees. The achieved accuracy was 95 % of capacity estimations; estimations were within 2 % of the nominal cell capacity from the true value

    Photoproduction of pions and properties of baryon resonances from a Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis

    Masses, widths and photocouplings of baryon resonances are determined in a coupled-channel partial wave analysis of a large variety of data. The Bonn-Gatchina partial wave formalism is extended to include a decomposition of t- and u-exchange amplitudes into individual partial waves. The multipole transition amplitudes for γp→pπ0\gamma p\to p\pi^0 and γp→nπ+\gamma p\to n\pi^+ are given and compared to results from other analyses.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure

    Two-Dimensional Distribution of Volatiles in the Lunar Regolith from Space Weathering Simulations

    We present simulations of space weathering effects on ice deposits in regions of permanent shadow on the Moon. These Monte Carlo simulations follow the effects of space weathering processes on the distribution of the volatiles over time. The model output constrains the coherence of volatile deposits with depth, lateral separation, and time. The results suggest that ice sheets become broken and buried with time. As impacts begin to puncture an initially coherent surficial ice sheet, small areas with a deficit of ice compared to surrounding areas are formed first. As time progresses, holes become prevalent and the anomalous regions are local enhancements of ice concentration in a volume. The 3-D distribution is also heterogeneous because the ice is buried to varying depths in different locations. Analysis of the coherence of ice on 10 cm scales predicts that putative ice sheets in anomalous radar craters are 1000 Myr old. For future in situ analysis of cold trap volatiles, a horizontal range of 10 m is sufficient to acquire surface-based measurements of heterogeneously distributed ice.     Integrated functional visualization of eukaryotic genomes

    BACKGROUND: Increasing amounts of data from large scale whole genome analysis efforts demands convenient tools for manipulation, visualization and investigation. Whole genome plots offer an intuitive window to the analysis. We describe two applications that enable users to easily plot and explore whole genome data from their own or other researchers' experiments. RESULTS: STRIPE and GFFtool (General Feature Format Tool) are softwares designed to support integration, visualization and exploration of whole genome data from eukaryotic genomes. STRIPE, in addition to providing a highly customizable and interactive data plot, provides access to numerous well-selected databases with updated information on all genes of a genome. GFFtool provides a user-friendly solution to integrating experimental data with the genomic information available in public databases. They also obviate the need for users to maintain large annotation resources, as they link to well-known resources using standard gene and protein identifiers. CONCLUSION: The programs provide the user with broad genomic overviews of data distribution, fast access to data of interest, and the ability to navigate speedily from one resource to another, and gain a better understanding of result of whole genome analysis experiments

    P-wave excited baryons from pion- and photo-induced hyperon production

    We report evidence for N(1710)P11N(1710)P_{11}, N(1875)P11N(1875)P_{11}, N(1900)P13N(1900)P_{13}, Δ(1600)P33\Delta(1600)P_{33}, Δ(1910)P31\Delta(1910)P_{31}, and Δ(1920)P33\Delta(1920)P_{33}, and find indications that N(1900)P13N(1900)P_{13} might have a companion state at 1970\,MeV. The controversial Δ(1750)P31\Delta(1750)P_{31} is not seen. The evidence is derived from a study of data on pion- and photo-induced hyperon production, but other data are included as well. Most of the resonances reported here were found in the Karlsruhe-Helsinki (KH84) and the Carnegie-Mellon (CM) analyses but were challenged recently by the Data Analysis Center at GWU. Our analysis is constrained by the energy independent πN\pi N scattering amplitudes from either KH84 or GWU. The two πN\pi N amplitudes from KH84 or GWU, respectively, lead to slightly different πN\pi N branching ratios of contributing resonances but the debated resonances are required in both series of fits.Comment: 22 pages, 28 figures.
