    MeV neutrinos in double beta decay

    The effect of Majorana neutrinos in the MeV mass range on the double beta decay of various isotopes is studied on pure phenomenological arguments. By using only experimental half life data, limits on the mixing parameter Ueh2U_{eh}^2 of the order 107^{-7} can be derived.     When an ultra-high energy neutrino or cosmic ray strikes the Lunar surface a radio-frequency pulse is emitted. We plan to use the LOFAR radio telescope to detect these pulses.     Free Energies and fluctuations for the unitary Brownian motion

    We show that the Laplace transforms of traces of words in independent unitary Brownian motions converge towards an analytic function on a non trivial disc. These results allow one to study the asymptotic behavior of Wilson loops under the unitary Yang--Mills measure on the plane with a potential. The limiting objects obtained are shown to be characterized by equations analogue to Schwinger--Dyson's ones, named here after Makeenko and Migdal

    Carcinoid syndrome

    The authors report a rare case of carcinoid syndrome (CS) in a 12-year-old child that was caused by a carcinoid tumor located in the ileum that had metastasized mainly to the liver. After resection of the primary tumor, treatment with octreotide and polychemotherapy (five monthly cycles of 5-fluorouracil, epidoxorubicin, and deticene) was ineffective for both reducing the metastatic liver disease and controlling the clinical symptoms. The patient's poor prognosis led the authors to perform a liver transplantation. The results of liver transplantation in patients with metastatic liver disease are generally not good. However, neuroendocrine tumors seem to be an exception due to their slow growth. At present, the child is in complete clinical and laboratory remission 4 months after transplantation. To the best of our knowledge, only 5 cases of CS have been reported to date in children

    Differences in the neurotoxicity profile induced by ATP and ATPgammaS in cultured cerebellar granule neurons

    Extracellular ATP and P2 receptors may play a crucial role in the neurodegeneration of the CNS. Here, we investigated in neuronal cerebellar granule cultures the biological effect of the quite stable P2 receptor agonist ATPgammaS and compare it to the cytotoxic action of ATP. Time-course experiments showed that 500 microM ATPgammaS causes 50-100% cell death in 15-24 h. As proved by pharmacological means, ATPgammaS toxicity apparently involves neither indirect activation of NMDA receptors, nor ectonucleotidase activities, nor nucleoside transport and intracellular purine metabolism. Moreover, ATPgammaS induces detrimental effects without modifying the expression of several P2X and P2Y receptor proteins. Cell death instead occurs after extracellular release of the cytosolic enzyme lactic dehydrogenase and inhibition of the overall activity of the intracellular dehydrogenases. Moreover, ATPgammaS causes transient outflow of cytochrome c from mitochondria (maximal 2.5-fold stimulation in 4 h), it raises the intracellular reactive oxygen species (about four-fold in 1 h) and cAMP levels (about 40% in 15 min-4 h). Among several P2 receptor antagonists, only pyridoxal-phosphate-6-azophenyl-2',4'-disulphonic acid 4-sodium promotes 80-100% neuroprotection

    Structure function measurements and kinematic reconstruction at HERA

    The procedure used for structure function measurements at HERA is briefly described and related to the properties of kinematic reconstruction. The reconstruction methods of the inclusive deep inelastic scattering variables are reviewed and their sensitivity to the energy and angle miscalibrations are discussed in detail. New prescriptions are introduced and related to the standard methods in order to optimize the F_2 structure function measurement over the widest kinematic range, both in the low x, low Q"2 and in the high x, high Q"2 regions. The prospects for the future high Q"2 studies are briefly discussed.     The mid-infrared channel of the EChO mission

    International audienceThe Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory, EChO, is a dedicated space mission to investigate the physics and chemistry of Exoplanet atmospheres. Using the differential spectroscopy by transit method, it will provide simultaneously a complete spectrum in a wide wavelength range between 0.4mum and 16mum of the atmosphere of exoplanets. It has been selected by ESA in its M3 Cosmic Vision program for a phase A study. The payload is subdivided into 6 channels. The mid-infrared channel covers the spectral range between 5mum and 11mum. In order to optimize the instrument response and the science objectives, the bandpass is split in two using an internal dichroic. We present the opto-mechanical concept of the MWIR channel and the on-going detector development that drives the thermal and mechanical designs of the channel. The estimated end-to-end performance will also be presented
