Stellar Populations of Highly Magnified Lensed Galaxies: Young Starbursts at z~2
We present a comprehensive analysis of the rest-frame UV to near-IR spectral
energy distributions and rest-frame optical spectra of four of the brightest
gravitationally lensed galaxies in the literature: RCSGA 032727-132609 at
z=1.70, MS1512-cB58 at z=2.73, SGAS J152745.1+065219 at z=2.76 and SGAS
J122651.3+215220 at z=2.92. This includes new Spitzer imaging for RCSGA0327 as
well as new spectra, near-IR imaging and Spitzer imaging for SGAS1527 and
SGAS1226. Lensing magnifications of 3-4 magnitudes allow a detailed study of
the stellar populations and physical conditions. We compare star formation
rates as measured from the SED fit, the H-alpha and [OII] emission lines, and
the UV+IR bolometric luminosity where 24 micron photometry is available. The
SFR estimate from the SED fit is consistently higher than the other indicators,
which suggests that the Calzetti dust extinction law used in the SED fitting is
too flat for young star-forming galaxies at z~2. Our analysis finds similar
stellar population parameters for all four lensed galaxies: stellar masses
3-7*10^9 M_sun, young ages ~ 100 Myr, little dust content E(B-V)=0.10-0.25, and
star formation rates around 20-100 M_sun/yr. Compared to typical values for the
galaxy population at z~2, this suggests we are looking at newly formed,
starbursting systems that have only recently started the build-up of stellar
mass. These results constitute the first detailed, uniform analysis of a sample
of the growing number of strongly lensed galaxies known at z~2.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, Accepted to Ap
Evolution from a nodeless gap to d(x2-y2) form in underdoped La(2-x)SrxCuO4
Using angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), it is revealed that the
low-energy electronic excitation spectra of highly underdoped superconducting
and non-superconducting La(2-x)SrxCuO4 cuprates are gapped along the entire
underlying Fermi surface at low temperatures. We show how the gap function
evolves to a d(x2-y2) form as increasing temperature or doping, consistent with
the vast majority of ARPES studies of cuprates. Our results provide essential
information for uncovering the symmetry of the order parameter(s) in strongly
underdoped cuprates, which is a prerequisite for understanding the pairing
mechanism and how superconductivity emerges from a Mott insulator.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The Herbertsmithite Hamiltonian: SR measurements on single crystals
We present transverse field muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements on
single crystals of the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet Herbertsmithite. We find
that the spins are more easily polarized when the field is perpendicular to the
kagome plane. We demonstrate that the difference in magnetization between the
different directions cannot be accounted for by Dzyaloshinksii-Moriya type
interactions alone, and that anisotropic axial interaction is present.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted to JPCM special issue on geometrically

Ga NMR study of the local susceptibility in SrCr8Ga4O19: pseudogap and paramagnetic defects
We present the first Ga(4f) NMR study of the Cr susceptibility in the
archetype of Kagome based frustrated antiferromagnets,
SrCrGaO. Our major finding is that the susceptibility of the
frustrated lattice goes through a maximum around 50 K. Our data also supports
the existence of paramagnetic ``clusters'' of spins, responsible for the Curie
behavior observed in the macroscopic susceptibility at low T. These results set
novel features for the constantly debated physics of geometrically frustrated
magnets.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Spin Echo Decay in a Stochastic Field Environment
We derive a general formalism with which it is possible to obtain the time
dependence of the echo size for a spin in a stochastic field environment. Our
model is based on ``strong collisions''. We examine in detail three cases
where: (I) the local field is Ising-like, (II) the field distribution is
continuous and has a finite second moment, and (III) the distribution is
Lorentzian. The first two cases show a T2 minimum effect and are exponential in
time cubed for short times. The last case can be approximated by a
phenomenological stretched exponential.Comment: 11 pages + 3 postscript figure
Kondo physics in the algebraic spin liquid
We study Kondo physics in the algebraic spin liquid, recently proposed to
describe [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 117205 (2007)].
Although spin dynamics of the algebraic spin liquid is described by massless
Dirac fermions, this problem differs from the Pseudogap Kondo model, because
the bulk physics in the algebraic spin liquid is governed by an interacting
fixed point where well-defined quasiparticle excitations are not allowed.
Considering an effective bulk model characterized by an anomalous critical
exponent, we derive an effective impurity action in the slave-boson context.
Performing the large- analysis with a spin index , we
find an impurity quantum phase transition from a decoupled local-moment state
to a Kondo-screened phase. We evaluate the impurity spin susceptibility and
specific heat coefficient at zero temperature, and find that such responses
follow power-law dependencies due to the anomalous exponent of the algebraic
spin liquid. Our main finding is that the Wilson's ratio for the magnetic
impurity depends strongly on the critical exponent in the zero temperature
limit. We propose that the Wilson's ratio for the magnetic impurity may be one
possible probe to reveal criticality of the bulk system
Magneto-thermodynamics of the spin-1/2 Kagome antiferromagnet
In this paper, we use a new hybrid method to compute the thermodynamic
behavior of the spin-1/2 Kagome antiferromagnet under the influence of a large
external magnetic field. We find a T^2 low-temperature behavior and a very low
sensitivity of the specific heat to a strong external magnetic field. We
display clear evidence that this low temperature magneto-thermal effect is
associated to the existence of low-lying fluctuating singlets, but also that
the whole picture (T^2 behavior of Cv and thermally activated spin
susceptibility) implies contribution of both non magnetic and magnetic
excitations. Comparison with experiments is made.Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX 2.09 and RevTeX with 3 figures embedded in the text.

Quantum transport through a DNA wire in a dissipative environment
Electronic transport through DNA wires in the presence of a strong
dissipative environment is investigated. We show that new bath-induced
electronic states are formed within the bandgap. These states show up in the
linear conductance spectrum as a temperature dependent background and lead to a
crossover from tunneling to thermal activated behavior with increasing
temperature. Depending on the strength of the electron-bath coupling, the
conductance at the Fermi level can show a weak exponential or even an algebraic
length dependence. Our results suggest a new environmental-induced transport
mechanism. This might be relevant for the understanding of molecular conduction
experiments in liquid solution, like those recently performed on poly(GC)
oligomers in a water buffer (B. Xu et al., Nano Lett 4, 1105 (2004)).Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Supersymmetric sound in fluids
We consider the hydrodynamics of supersymmetric fluids. Supersymmetry is
broken spontaneously and the low energy spectrum includes a fermionic massless
mode, the . We use two complementary approaches to describe
the system: First, we construct a generating functional from which we derive
the equations of motion of the fluid and of the phonino propagating through the
fluid. We write the form of the leading corrections in the derivative
expansion, and show that the so called diffusion terms in the supercurrent are
in fact not dissipative. Second, we use an effective field theory approach
which utilizes a non-linear realization of supersymmetry to analyze the
interactions between phoninos and phonons, and demonstrate the conservation of
entropy in ideal fluids. We comment on possible phenomenological consequences
for gravitino physics in the early universe.Comment: Modified introduction and discussion of diffusion terms in the

Charming CP Violation and Dipole Operators from RS Flavor Anarchy
Recently the LHCb collaboration reported evidence for direct CP violation in
charm decays. The value is sufficiently large that either substantially
enhanced Standard Model contributions or non-Standard Model physics is required
to explain it. In the latter case only a limited number of possibilities would
be consistent with other existing flavor-changing constraints. We show that
warped extra dimensional models that explain the quark spectrum through flavor
anarchy can naturally give rise to contributions of the size required to
explain the the LHCb result. The D meson asymmetry arises through a sizable
CP-violating contribution to a chromomagnetic dipole operator. This happens
naturally without introducing inconsistencies with existing constraints in the
up quark sector. We discuss some subtleties in the loop calculation that are
similar to those in Higgs to \gamma\gamma. Loop-induced dipole operators in
warped scenarios and their composite analogs exhibit non-trivial dependence on
the Higgs profile, with the contributions monotonically decreasing when the
Higgs is pushed away from the IR brane. We show that the size of the dipole
operator quickly saturates as the Higgs profile approaches the IR brane,
implying small dependence on the precise details of the Higgs profile when it
is quasi IR localized. We also explain why the calculation of the coefficient
of the lowest dimension 5D operator is guaranteed to be finite. This is true
not only in the charm sector but also with other radiative processes such as
electric dipole moments, b to s\gamma, \epsilon'/\epsilon_K and \mu\ to
e\gamma. We furthermore discuss the interpretation of this contribution within
the framework of partial compositeness in four dimensions and highlight some
qualitative differences between the generic result of composite models and that
obtained for dynamics that reproduces the warped scenario.Comment: 14 page
