Guadalupe pluton–Mariposa Formation age relationships in the southern Sierran Foothills: Onset of Mesozoic subduction in northern California?
We report a new 153 ± 2 Ma SIMS U-Pb date for zircons from the hypabyssal Guadalupe pluton which crosscuts and contact metamorphoses upper crustal Mariposa slates in the southern Sierra. A ~950 m thick section of dark metashales lies below sandstones from which clastic zircons were analyzed at 152 ± 2 Ma. Assuming a compacted depositional rate of ~120 m/Myr, accumulation of Mariposa volcanogenic sediments, which overlie previously stranded Middle Jurassic and older ophiolite + chert-argillite belts in the Sierran Foothills, began no later than ~160 Ma. Correlative Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian strata of the Galice Formation occupy a similar position in the Klamath Mountains. We speculate that the Late Jurassic was a time of transition from (1) a mid-Paleozoic–Middle Jurassic interval of mainly but not exclusively strike-slip and episodic docking of oceanic terranes; (2) to transpressive plate underflow, producing calcalkaline igneous arc rocks ± outboard blueschists at ~170–150 Ma, whose erosion promoted accumulation of the Mariposa-Galice overlap strata; (3) continued transpressive underflow attending ~200 km left-lateral displacement of the Klamath salient relative to the Sierran arc at ~150–140 Ma and development of the apparent polar wander path cusps for North and South America; and (4) then nearly orthogonal mid and Late Cretaceous convergence commencing at ~125–120 Ma, during reversal in tangential motion of the Pacific plate. After ~120 Ma, nearly head-on subduction involving minor dextral transpression gave rise to voluminous continent-building juvenile and recycled magmas of the Sierran arc, providing the erosional debris to the Great Valley fore arc and Franciscan trench
Real Output in Mental Health Care During the 1990s
Health accounts document changes over time in the level and composition of health spending. There has been a continued evolution in the ability to track such outlays. Less rapid has been the ability to interpret changes in spending. In this paper we apply quality adjusted price indexes for several major mental disorders to national mental health account estimates to assess changes in real "output". We show that using the new price indexes reveals large gains in real output relative to application of BLS indexes.
Dynamics of Dissipative Quantum Hall Edges
We examine the influence of the edge electronic density profile and of
dissipation on edge magnetoplasmons in the quantum Hall regime, in a
semiclassical calculation. The equilibrium electron density on the edge,
obtained using a Thomas-Fermi approach, has incompressible stripes produced by
energy gaps responsible for the quantum Hall effect. We find that these stripes
have an unobservably small effect on the edge magnetoplasmons. But dissipation,
included phenomenologically in the local conductivity, proves to produce
significant oscillations in the strength and speed of edge magnetoplasmons in
the quantum Hall regime.Comment: 23 pages including 10 figure
Determining parameters of the Neugebauer family of vacuum spacetimes in terms of data specified on the symmetry axis
We express the complex potential E and the metrical fields omega and gamma of
all stationary axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes that result from the application
of two successive quadruple-Neugebauer (or two double-Harrison) transformations
to Minkowski space in terms of data specified on the symmetry axis, which are
in turn easily expressed in terms of multipole moments. Moreover, we suggest
how, in future papers, we shall apply our approach to do the same thing for
those vacuum solutions that arise from the application of more than two
successive transformations, and for those electrovac solutions that have axis
data similar to that of the vacuum solutions of the Neugebauer family.

Linearized model Fokker-Planck collision operators for gyrokinetic simulations. II. Numerical implementation and tests
A set of key properties for an ideal dissipation scheme in gyrokinetic
simulations is proposed, and implementation of a model collision operator
satisfying these properties is described. This operator is based on the exact
linearized test-particle collision operator, with approximations to the
field-particle terms that preserve conservation laws and an H-Theorem. It
includes energy diffusion, pitch-angle scattering, and finite Larmor radius
effects corresponding to classical (real-space) diffusion. The numerical
implementation in the continuum gyrokinetic code GS2 is fully implicit and
guarantees exact satisfaction of conservation properties. Numerical results are
presented showing that the correct physics is captured over the entire range of
collisionalities, from the collisionless to the strongly collisional regimes,
without recourse to artificial dissipation.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Physics of Plasmas; typos fixe
Fully Electrified Neugebauer Spacetimes
Generalizing a method presented in an earlier paper, we express the complex
potentials E and Phi of all stationary axisymmetric electrovac spacetimes that
correspond to axis data of the form E(z,0) = (U-W)/(U+W) , Phi(z,0) = V/(U+W) ,
where U = z^{2} + U_{1} z + U_{2} , V = V_{1} z + V_{2} , W = W_{1} z + W_{2} ,
in terms of the complex parameters U_{1}, V_{1}, W_{1}, U_{2}, V_{2} and W_{2},
that are directly associated with the various multipole moments. (Revised to
clarify certain subtle points.)Comment: 25 pages, REVTE
Interaction of CO and O2 with Pt Studied by Field Ion Appearance Energy Spectroscopy
Using field ion appearance energy spectroscopy we have examined the interaction of CO and 02 with stepped platinum surfaces in the presence of electrostatic fields ranging between 10 and 20 V/nm. Mass-to-charge resolved retarding potential analyses have been carried out for single sites of [001] and [111]-oriented Pt field emitter exposed to a continuous flow of CO and 02. Applying a thermionic cycle, binding energies of molecularly adsorbed CO and O2, were derived from the appearance energies of field desorbed CO+ and O+2 . The data reveal an effect of the high field on the molecule-surface interaction, which is most pronounced for COPt(111) steps. Implications for FIM studies of catalytic CO and H2, oxidation reactions are discussed
Local demands on sterile neutrinos
In a model independent manner, we explore the local implications of a single
neutrino oscillation measurement which cannot be reconciled within a
three-neutrino theory. We examine this inconsistency for a single region of
baseline to neutrino energy . Assuming that sterile neutrinos account for
the anomaly, we find that the {\it local} demands of this datum can require the
addition to the theory of one to three sterile neutrinos. We examine the
constraints which can be used to determine when more than one neutrino would be
required. The results apply only to a given region of . The question of
the adequacy of the sterile neutrinos to satisfy a global analysis is not
addressed here. Finally, using the results of a 3+2 analysis, we indicate
values for unknown mixing matrix elements which would require two sterile
neutrinos due to local demands only.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, discussion adde
Innermost stable circular orbits around relativistic rotating stars
We investigate the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a test particle
moving on the equatorial plane around rotating relativistic stars such as
neutron stars. First, we derive approximate analytic formulas for the angular
velocity and circumferential radius at the ISCO making use of an approximate
relativistic solution which is characterized by arbitrary mass, spin, mass
quadrupole, current octapole and mass -pole moments. Then, we show that
the analytic formulas are accurate enough by comparing them with numerical
results, which are obtained by analyzing the vacuum exterior around numerically
computed geometries for rotating stars of polytropic equation of state. We
demonstrate that contribution of mass quadrupole moment for determining the
angular velocity and, in particular, the circumferential radius at the ISCO
around a rapidly rotating star is as important as that of spin.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
