    A note on the Gao et al. (2019) uniform mixture model in the case of regression

    © 2019, The Author(s). We extend the uniform mixture model of Gao et al. (Ann Oper Res, 2019. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10479-019-03236-9) to the case of linear regression. Gao et al. (Ann Oper Res, 2019. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10479-019-03236-9) proposed that to characterize the probability distributions of multimodal and irregular data observed in engineering, a uniform mixture model can be used. This model is a weighted combination of multiple uniform distribution components. This case is of empirical interest since, in many instances, the distribution of the error term in a linear regression model cannot be assumed unimodal. Bayesian methods of inference organized around Markov chain Monte Carlo are proposed. In a Monte Carlo experiment, significant efficiency gains are found in comparison to least squares justifying the use of the uniform mixture model

    Quantile stochastic frontier models with endogeneity

    In this paper, we extend Jradi et al. (2019). First, we use the asymmetric Laplace distribution which is a more reasonable assumption in quantile models. Second, we address the issue of statistical inference for the optimal quantile. Finally, we allow for endogeneity in quantile stochastic frontier models. The new formulation is implemented in a Bayesian framework using Markov Chain Monte Carlo. We employ the celebrated Philippine rice data as in Jradi et al. (2019). Jradi et al.     Association of the 894G>T polymorphism in the endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene with risk of acute myocardial infarction

    Background: This study was designed to investigate the association of the 894G>T polymorphism in the eNOS gene with risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), extent of coronary artery disease (CAD) on coronary angiography, and in-hospital mortality after AMI. Methods: We studied 1602 consecutive patients who were enrolled in the GEMIG study. The control group was comprised by 727 individuals, who were randomly selected from the general adult population. Results: The prevalence of the Asp298 variant of eNOS was not found to be significantly and independently associated with risk of AMI (RR = 1.08, 95%CI = 0.77–1.51, P = 0.663), extent of CAD on angiography (OR = 1.18, 95%CI = 0.63–2.23, P = 0.605) and in-hospital mortality (RR = 1.08, 95%CI = 0.29–4.04, P = 0.908). Conclusion: In contrast to previous reports, homozygosity for the Asp298 variant of the 894G>T polymorphism in the eNOS gene was not found to be associated with risk of AMI, extent of CAD and in-hospital mortality after AM

    On the origin of the λ\lambda-transition in liquid Sulphur

    Developing a novel experimental technique, we applied photon correlation spectroscopy using infrared radiation in liquid Sulphur around TλT_\lambda, i.e. in the temperature range where an abrupt increase in viscosity by four orders of magnitude is observed upon heating within few degrees. This allowed us - overcoming photo-induced and absorption effects at visible wavelengths - to reveal a chain relaxation process with characteristic time in the ms range. These results do rehabilitate the validity of the Maxwell relation in Sulphur from an apparent failure, allowing rationalizing the mechanical and thermodynamic behavior of this system within a viscoelastic scenario.Comment: 5 pages, 4 eps figures, accepted in Phys.     Pressure screening in the interior of primary shells in double-wall carbon nanotubes

    The pressure response of double-wall carbon nanotubes has been investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy up to 10 GPa. The intensity of the radial breathing modes of the outer tubes decreases rapidly but remain observable up to 9 GPa, exhibiting a behavior similar (but less pronounced) to that of single-wall carbon nanotubes, which undergo a shape distortion at higher pressures. In addition, the tangential band of the external tubes broadens and decreases in amplitude. The corresponding Raman features of the internal tubes appear to be considerably less sensitive to pressure. All findings lead to the conclusion that the outer tubes act as a protection shield for the inner tubes whereas the latter increase the structural stability of the outer tubes upon pressure application.Comment: PDF with 15 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; submitted to Physical Review

    Terahertz underdamped vibrational motion governs protein-ligand binding in solution

    Low-frequency collective vibrational modes in proteins have been proposed as being responsible for efficiently directing biochemical reactions and biological energy transport. However, evidence of the existence of delocalized vibrational modes is scarce and proof of their involvement in biological function absent. Here we apply extremely sensitive femtosecond optical Kerr-effect spectroscopy to study the depolarized Raman spectra of lysozyme and its complex with the inhibitor triacetylchitotriose in solution. Underdamped delocalized vibrational modes in the terahertz frequency domain are identified and shown to blue-shift and strengthen upon inhibitor binding. This demonstrates that the ligand-binding coordinate in proteins is underdamped and not simply solvent-controlled as previously assumed. The presence of such underdamped delocalized modes in proteins may have significant implications for the understanding of the efficiency of ligand binding and protein–molecule interactions, and has wider implications for biochemical reactivity and biological function

    Raman scattering study of the a-GeTe structure and possible mechanism for the amorphous-to-crystal transition

    We report on an inelastic (Raman) light scattering study of the local structure of amorphous GeTe films. A detailed analysis of the temperature-reduced Raman spectra has shown that appreciable structural changes occur as a function of temperature. These changes involve modifications of atomic arrangements such as to facilitate the rapid amorphous-to-crystal transformation, which is the major advantage of phase-change materials used in optical data storage media. A particular structural model, supported by polarization analysis, is proposed being compatible with the experimental data as regards both the structure of a-GeTe and the crystallization transition.     The Relation of Migraine Headaches and Interatrial Shunts

    Foramen ovale plays a very important role in fetal circulation by bypassing the lungs and diverting circulation from the right to the left heart. With birth it is usually sealed; however, probe patent or incompletely sealed foramen ovale remains in approximately 25% of adults. Patent foramen ovale (PFO) acquires significance in various congenital heart diseases or other particular settings leading to a right to left shunt, and thus to paradoxical embolism. PFO has been associated with transient ischemic attacks or cryptogenic strokes and also a host of other problems, including migraine. The recognition of an association between migraine syndrome with aura and PFO appears to have come ???full circle??? over the past two decades. Epidemiologic studies have suggested a notably increased PFO prevalence in persons suffering from migraine.The prevalence of migraine headache is higher in cryptogenic stroke patients with PFO than in the general population. Studies have suggested that closure of the PFO may reduce migrainous symptoms. The relation between this association and the recognition of migraine as a risk factor for ischemic stroke in the young is unclear, though right to left passage of circulating factors has been postulated in both syndromes. Despite case series and uncontrolled studies documenting beneficial effects of PFO closure in patients with migraine, particularly those also afflicted by cryptogenic stroke, the recommendation for PFO closure in patients with migraine alone will need to await the results of ongoing randomized trials
