    Three undescribed pathogenic Phytophthora taxa from the south-west of Western Australia

    The Phytophthora culture collection of the Vegetation Health Service of the Department of Environment and Conservation of Western Australia (WA) has been re-evaluated using DNA sequencing (Burgess et al., 2009). This has revealed many undescribed taxa previously classified as known morpho-species, one of which has recently been described as P. multivora (Scott et al., 2009). The aim of this study was to describe three of these taxa, all of which occur in WA native ecosystems. They were compared with both the morphological species to which they are most similar and their closest phylogenetic relatives.     Unintegrated gluon distribution and soft pp collisions at LHC

    We found the parameterization of the unintegrated gluon distribution from the best description of the LHC data on the inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in pppp collisions at the mid-rapidity region and small transverse momenta. It is different from the one obtained within perturbative QCD only at low intrinsic transverse momenta ktk_t. The application of this distribution to analysis of the e−pe-p DIS allows us to get the results which do not contradict the H1 and ZEUS data on the structure functions at low xx. So, the connection between the soft processes at LHC and low-xx physics at HERA is found.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures.     Comparison of techniques to reconstruct VHE gamma-ray showers from multiple stereoscopic Cherenkov images

    For air showers observed simultaneously by more than two imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, the shower geometry is overconstrained by the images and image information should be combined taking into account the quality of the images. Different algorithms are discussed and tested experimentally using data obtained from observations of Mkn 501 with the HEGRA IACT system. Most of these algorithms provide an estimate of the accuracy of the reconstruction of shower geometry on an event-by-event basis, allowing, e.g., to select higher-quality subsamples for precision measurements.Comment: 14 Pages, 6 figures, Late

    Comparison of electric dipole moments and the Large Hadron Collider for probing CP violation in triple boson vertices

    CP violation from physics beyond the Standard Model may reside in triple boson vertices of the electroweak theory. We review the effective theory description and discuss how CP violating contributions to these vertices might be discerned by electric dipole moments (EDM) or diboson production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Despite triple boson CP violating interactions entering EDMs only at the two-loop level, we find that EDM experiments are generally more powerful than the diboson processes. To give example to these general considerations we perform the comparison between EDMs and collider observables within supersymmetric theories that have heavy sfermions, such that substantive EDMs at the one-loop level are disallowed. EDMs generally remain more powerful probes, and next-generation EDM experiments may surpass even the most optimistic assumptions for LHC sensitivities.Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures, published version with more argument

    Sequential Flavour Symmetry Breaking

    The gauge sector of the Standard Model (SM) exhibits a flavour symmetry which allows for independent unitary transformations of the fermion multiplets. In the SM the flavour symmetry is broken by the Yukawa couplings to the Higgs boson, and the resulting fermion masses and mixing angles show a pronounced hierarchy. In this work we connect the observed hierarchy to a sequence of intermediate effective theories, where the flavour symmetries are broken in a step-wise fashion by vacuum expectation values of suitably constructed spurion fields. We identify the possible scenarios in the quark sector and discuss some implications of this approach.Comment: 22 pages latex, no figure

    Strong electron correlations in cobalt valence tautomers

    We have examined cobalt based valence tautomer molecules such as Co(SQ)2_2(phen) using density functional theory (DFT) and variational configuration interaction (VCI) approaches based upon a model Hamiltonian. Our DFT results extend earlier work by finding a reduced total energy gap (order 0.6 eV) between high temperature and low temperature states when we fully relax the coordinates (relative to experimental ones). Futhermore we demonstrate that the charge transfer picture based upon formal valence arguments succeeds qualitatively while failing quantitatively due to strong covalency between the Co 3dd orbitals and ligand pp orbitals. With the VCI approach, we argue that the high temperature, high spin phase is strongly mixed valent, with about 30 % admixture of Co(III) into the predominantly Co(II) ground state. We confirm this mixed valence through a fit to the XANES spectra. Moreover, the strong electron correlations of the mixed valent phase provide an energy lowering of about 0.2-0.3 eV of the high temperature phase relative to the low temperature one. Finally, we use the domain model to account for the extraordinarily large entropy and enthalpy values associated with the transition.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. Chem. Phy

    Shot noise of a quantum dot measured with GHz stub impedance matching

    The demand for a fast high-frequency read-out of high impedance devices, such as quantum dots, necessitates impedance matching. Here we use a resonant impedance matching circuit (a stub tuner) realized by on-chip superconducting transmission lines to measure the electronic shot noise of a carbon nanotube quantum dot at a frequency close to 3 GHz in an efficient way. As compared to wide-band detection without impedance matching, the signal to noise ratio can be enhanced by as much as a factor of 800 for a device with an impedance of 100 kΩ\Omega. The advantage of the stub resonator concept is the ease with which the response of the circuit can be predicted, designed and fabricated. We further demonstrate that all relevant matching circuit parameters can reliably be deduced from power reflectance measurements and then used to predict the power transmission function from the device through the circuit. The shot noise of the carbon nanotube quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime shows an oscillating suppression below the Schottky value of 2eI2eI, as well an enhancement in specific regions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, supplementar

    Use of the KlADH4 promoter for ethanol-dependent production of recombinant human serum albumine in Kluyveromyces lactis

    KlADH4 is a gene of Kluyveromyces lactis encoding a mitochondrial alcohol dehydrogenase activity which is specifically induced by ethanol. The promoter of this gene was used for the expression of heterologous proteins in K. lactis, a very promising organism which can be used as an alternative host to Saccharomyces cerevisiae due to its good secretory properties. In this paper we report the ethanol-driven expression in K. lactis of the bacterial beta-glucuronidase and of the human serum albumin (HSA) genes under the control of the KlADH4 promoter. In particular, we studied the extracellular production of recombinant HSA (rHSA) with integrative and replicative vectors and obtained a significant increase in the amount of the protein with multicopy vectors, showing that no limitation of KlADH4 trans-acting factors occurred in the cells. By deletion analysis of the promoter, we identified an element (UASE) which is sufficient for the induction of KlADH4 by ethanol and, when inserted in the respective promoters, allows ethanol-dependent activation of other yeast genes, such as PGK and LAC4. We also analyzed the effect of medium composition on cell growth and protein secretion. A clear improvement in the production of the recombinant protein was achieved by shifting from batch cultures (0.3 g/liter) to fed-batch cultures (1 g/liter) with ethanol as the preferred carbon source

    New Candidates for Topological Insulators : Pb-based chalcogenide series

    Here, we theoretically predict that the series of Pb-based layered chalcogenides, Pbn_nBi2_2Sen+3_{n+3} and Pbn_nSb2_2Ten+3_{n+3}, are possible new candidates for topological insulators. As nn increases, the phase transition from a topological insulator to a band insulator is found to occur between n=2n=2 and 3 for both series. Significantly, among the new topological insulators, we found a bulk band gap of 0.40eV in PbBi2_2Se4_4 which is one of the largest gap topological insulators, and that Pb2_2Sb2_2Te5_5 is located in the immediate vicinity of the topological phase boundary, making its topological phase easily tunable by changing external parameters such as lattice constants. Due to the three-dimensional Dirac cone at the phase boundary, massless Dirac fermions also may be easily accessible in Pb2_2Sb2_2Te5_5

    Classical Scattering for a driven inverted Gaussian potential in terms of the chaotic invariant set

    We study the classical electron scattering from a driven inverted Gaussian potential, an open system, in terms of its chaotic invariant set. This chaotic invariant set is described by a ternary horseshoe construction on an appropriate Poincare surface of section. We find the development parameters that describe the hyperbolic component of the chaotic invariant set. In addition, we show that the hierarchical structure of the fractal set of singularities of the scattering functions is the same as the structure of the chaotic invariant set. Finally, we construct a symbolic encoding of the hierarchical structure of the set of singularities of the scattering functions and use concepts from the thermodynamical formalism to obtain one of the measures of chaos of the fractal set of singularities, the topological entropy.Comment: accepted in Phy.
