Fatigue damage in cross-ply titanium metal matrix composites containing center holes
The development of fatigue damage in (0/90) sub SCS-6/TI-15-3 laminates containing center holes was studied. Stress levels required for crack initiation in the matrix were predicted using an effective strain parameter and compared to experimental results. Damage progression was monitored at various stages of fatigue loading. In general, a saturated state of damage consisting of matrix cracks and fiber matrix debonding was obtained which reduced the composite modulus. Matrix cracks were bridged by the 0 deg fibers. The fatigue limit (stress causing catastrophic fracture of the laminates) was also determined. The static and post fatigue residual strengths were accurately predicted using a three dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Catch Rates with Variable Strength Circle Hooks in the Hawaii-Based Tuna Longline Fishery
The Hawaii-based deep-set longline fleet targets bigeye tuna [Thunnus obesus (Lowe, 1839)] and infrequently takes false killer whales [FKW , Pseudorca crassidens (Owen, 1846)] as bycatch. From 2004 to 2008 with 20%â26% observer coverage, nine mortalities of and serious injuries to FKW were documented in the deep-set fishery in the Hawaii EE Z, yielding a mean take estimate of 7.3 animals yrâ1. Weak hook technology can utilize the size disparity between target and other species to promote the release of larger non-target species. Four vessels tested the catch efficacy and size selectivity of 15/0 âstrongâ circle hooks (4.5 mm wire diameter) that straighten at 138 kg of pull in comparison with 15/0 âweakâ (4.0 mm) that straighten at 93 kg of pull. Vessels alternated hook types throughout the longline gear and maintained a 1:1 ratio of strong and weak hooks. Observers monitored a total of 127 sets of 302,738 hooks, and randomization tests were applied to test for significant differences in catch for 22 species. There were no significant catch differences for bigeye tuna; however, there may be limitations to these inferences because trials were not conducted during spring when larger bigeye tuna are available to the fishery. There were no significant differences in mean length of 15 species. Observers collected 76 straightened hooks, of which six were control and 70 were weak hooks. There was one observation of a FKW released from a stronger circle hook. Overall, there was no statistical reduction in catch rates of bycatch species

Spin dynamics of a trapped spin-1 Bose Gas above the Bose-Einstein transition temperature
We study collective spin oscillations in a spin-1 Bose gas above the
Bose-Einstein transition temperature. Starting from the Heisenberg equation of
motion, we derive a kinetic equation describing the dynamics of a thermal gas
with the spin-1 degree of freedom. Applying the moment method to the kinetic
equation, we study spin-wave collective modes with dipole symmetry. The dipole
modes in the spin-1 system are found to be classified into the three type of
modes. The frequency and damping rate are obtained as functions of the peak
density. The damping rate is characterized by three relaxation times associated

Solvent extraction studies of coprocessing flowsheets: results from Campaign 5 of the Solvent Extraction Test Facility (SETF)
In Campaign 5, fast breeder reactor (FBR) fuel [average burnup {similar_to}2.6 TJ/kg ({similar_to}30,000 MWd/t)] was processed for the first time. Operations in a single extraction cycle with 30% TBP-NPH were satisfactory with low heavy-metal losses (< 0.02%) and high decontamination factors (DFs > 1000) for all fission products except {sup 95}Zr, which exhibited moderate DFs (180 and 750, respectively, in two runs). The use of a split scrub stream (0.5 M and 3 M HNO{sub 3}) vs a single scrub stream (3 M HNO{sub 3}) resulted in the higher DF. An extractant backscrubbing stream was not needed to produce partially partitioned uranium-plutonium products containing 30 to 35% plutonium when processing the core FBR fuel (22% Pu). The necessary enrichment factor ({similar_to}1.5) was attained by maintaining the temperature at 25 to 30{sup 0}C in partial partitioning and adjusting the relative flow rates of the aqueous and organic phases. The plutonium recovery in the two runs ({similar_to}400 g) was purified by anion exchange and converted to PuO{sub 2} for fuel refabrication studies. 8 references, 7 figures, 6 tables
Observation of anomalous spin-state segregation in a trapped ultra-cold vapor
We observe counter-intuitive spin segregation in an inhomogeneous sample of
ultra-cold, non-condensed Rubidium atoms in a magnetic trap. We use spatially
selective microwave spectroscopy to verify a model that accounts for the
differential forces on two internal spin states. In any simple understanding of
the cloud dynamics, the forces are far too small to account for the dramatic
transient spin polarizations observed. The underlying mechanism remains to be

sodium-rubidium (Na-Rb) system. We present improved hybrid potentials for the
singlet and triplet ground states of the NaRb
molecule, and calculate the singlet and triplet scattering lengths and
for the isotopomers NaRb and NaRb. Using
these values, we assess the prospects for producing a stable two-species
