Cereal and Pulse Crops with Improved Resistance to Pratylenchus thornei Are Needed to Maximize Wheat Production and Expand Crop Sequence Options
n the subtropical grain region of eastern Australia, two experiments were conducted, one initially with 2490 P. thornei/kg soil, the other with 8150 P. thornei/kg soil at 0â0.9 m soil depth. We determined the effect of P. thornei, residual from a weed-free fallow and pre-cropping with several cultivars each of barley (Hordeum vulgare), faba bean (Vicia faba), chickpea (Cicer arietinum), and wheat (Triticum aestivum) (Phase 1), on the growth of wheat cultivars with intolerance or tolerance to P. thornei (Phase 2). Pratylenchus thornei substantially increased after growing all cultivars of the Phase 1 faba bean, barley, and most cultivars of chickpea and wheat, and decreased after two moderately resistant wheat cultivars and the fallow treatment. The biomass of the Phase 2 tolerant cultivar ranged from 5070 to 6780 kg/ha and the intolerant cultivar 1020 to 4740 kg/ha. There was a negative linear relationship between P. thornei population densities and biomass of the Phase 2 intolerant cultivar but not of the tolerant cultivar. Growers are at risk of financial loss because they are restricted in their choice of crops to reduce damaging population densities of P. thornei. The development of resistant and tolerant crop genotypes can maximize production in P. thornei-affected farming systems
Seizures after carotid endarterectomy: Hyperperfusion, dysautoregulation or hypertensive encephalopathy?
AbstractObjectives: presentation, management and outcome following seizure after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Materials and Design: prospective audit. Results: Eight patients (0.8%) suffered a seizure (three bilateral) <30 days following 949 CEAs. Seizure was not associated with age, gender or presentation. Seven were treated hypertensives but four had labile BP pre-operatively. Five had severe bilateral carotid disease and four had vertebral/subclavian stenoses. Six had a >50% drop in middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity (MCAV) with clamping. Only three had >100% increase in MCAV with flow restoration. Five required treatment for post-operative hypertension. Two suffered seizures <36 hrs of CEA, the remainder were at 3-8 days. All eight had significantly elevated blood pressure at onset of seizures. Four underwent immediate MCAV monitoring and each was elevated. Emergency CT scanning/autopsy showed normal scans (n = 3), white matter oedema (n = 3), oedema and diffuse haemorrhage (n = 1), intracranial haemorrhage (n = 1). Seven developed a post-ictal neurological deficit (stroke = 5, TIA = 2). Overall, two patients either died or suffered a disabling stroke. Conclusions: post-CEA seizure was associated with adverse outcome. Most were labile hypertensives with severe bilateral carotid/vertebral disease. MCAV changes suggested poor collateral recruitment, but no consistent pattern of early hyperperfusion emerged. It remains uncertain whether high MCAVs and severe hypertension after seizure onset are cause or effect. Clinicians treating these patients in acute medical units were generally unaware of the âpost-CEA hyperperfusion syndromeâ and tended to treat the hypertension less aggressively.Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg 26, 39-44 (2003
Electrodynamics of Magnetars: Implications for the Persistent X-ray Emission and Spindown of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars
(ABBREVIATED) We consider the structure of neutron star magnetospheres
threaded by large-scale electrical currents, and the effect of resonant Compton
scattering by the charge carriers (both electrons and ions) on the emergent
X-ray spectra and pulse profiles. In the magnetar model for the SGRs and AXPs,
these currents are maintained by magnetic stresses acting deep inside the star.
We construct self-similar, force-free equilibria of the current-carrying
magnetosphere with a power-law dependence of magnetic field on radius, B ~
r^(-2-p), and show that a large-scale twist softens the radial dependence to p
< 1. The spindown torque acting on the star is thereby increased in comparison
with a vacuum dipole. We comment on the strength of the surface magnetic field
in the SGR and AXP sources, and the implications of this model for the narrow
measured distribution of spin periods. A magnetosphere with a strong twist,
B_\phi/B_\theta = O(1) at the equator, has an optical depth ~ 1 to resonant
cyclotron scattering, independent of frequency (radius), surface magnetic field
strength, or charge/mass ratio of the scattering charge. When electrons and
ions supply the current, the stellar surface is also heated by the impacting
charges at a rate comparable to the observed X-ray output of the SGR and AXP
sources, if B_{dipole} ~ 10^{14} G. Redistribution of the emerging X-ray flux
at the ion and electron cyclotron resonances will significantly modify the
emerging pulse profile and, through the Doppler effect, generate a non-thermal
tail to the X-ray spectrum. The sudden change in the pulse profile of SGR
1900+14 after the 27 August 1998 giant flare is related to an enhanced optical
depth to electron cyclotron scattering, resulting from a sudden twist imparted

High-resolution Near-Infrared Images and Models of the Circumstellar Disk in HH 30
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-object
Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of the reflection nebulosity associated with
the T Tauri star HH 30. The images show the scattered light pattern
characteristic of a highly inclined, optically thick disk with a prominent
dustlane whose width decreases with increasing wavelength. The reflected
nebulosity exhibits a lateral asymmetry in the upper lobe on the opposite side
to that reported in previously published Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2)
images. The radiation transfer model which most closely reproduces the data has
a flared accretion disk with dust grains larger than standard interstellar
medium grains by a factor of approximately 2.1. A single hotspot on the stellar
surface provides the necessary asymmetry to fit the images and is consistent
with previous modeling of the light curve and images. Photometric analysis
results in an estimated extinction of Av>~80; however, since the photometry
measures only scattered light rather than direct stellar flux, this a lower
limit. The radiative transfer models require an extinction of Av = 7,900.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap.
Comparison of Body Composition Measurements using a New Caliper, Two Established Calipers, Hydrostatic Weighing, and BodPod
Purposes: (1) To compare the Lafayette Instruments (LI) skinfold caliper to the Lange (L) and Harpenden (H) calipers using a diverse subject population. (2) To determine the validity of the LI caliper in a subset of subjects by comparing body compositions from skinfold thicknesses to those measured by hydrostatic weighing (HW) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP). (3) To compare measurements obtained by experienced (EX) and inexperienced (IX) technicians using all three calipers. Methods: Skinfold measurements were performed by both EX and IX technicians using three different calipers on 21 younger (21.2 ± 1.5 yrs) and 20 older (59.2 ± 4 yrs) subjects. Body compositions were calculated using the Jackson-Pollock seven-site and three-site formulas. HW and ADP tests were performed on a subset of subjects (10 younger, 10 older). Results: No significant differences existed between LI and L or H when measurements were made by EX. Further, the LI-EX measurements were highly correlated to both H-EX and L-EX. No significant differences existed in the subgroup between LI-EX and HW or ADP. Skinfold determinations made by EX and IX were similar. Conclusions: Similar body compositions determined using LI, H, and L suggest that LI determines body composition as effectively as H and L. High correlations between the three calipers support this notion. Similar results between LI and HW/ADP subgroup suggest that the LI caliper may be a valid method of measuring body composition. Overall, performance by IX was similar to EX and suggests similar ease of use for all three calipers
A deep Large Binocular Telescope view of the Canes Venatici I dwarf galaxy
We present the first deep color-magnitude diagram of the Canes Venatici I
(CVnI) dwarf galaxy from observations with the wide field Large Binocular
Camera on the Large Binocular Telescope. Reaching down to the main-sequence
turnoff of the oldest stars, it reveals a dichotomy in the stellar populations
of CVnI: it harbors an old (> 10 Gyr), metal-poor ([Fe/H] ~ -2.0) and spatially
extended population along with a much younger (~ 1.4-2.0 Gyr), 0.5 dex more
metal-rich, and spatially more concentrated population. These young stars are
also offset by 64_{-20}^{+40} pc to the East of the galaxy center. The data
suggest that this young population, which represent ~ 3-5 % of the stellar mass
of the galaxy within its half-light radius, should be identified with the
kinematically cold stellar component found by Ibata et al. (2006). CVnI
therefore follows the behavior of the other remote MW dwarf spheroidals which
all contain intermediate age and/or young populations: a complex star formation

Killing Tensors and Conformal Killing Tensors from Conformal Killing Vectors
Koutras has proposed some methods to construct reducible proper conformal
Killing tensors and Killing tensors (which are, in general, irreducible) when a
pair of orthogonal conformal Killing vectors exist in a given space. We give
the completely general result demonstrating that this severe restriction of
orthogonality is unnecessary. In addition we correct and extend some results
concerning Killing tensors constructed from a single conformal Killing vector.
A number of examples demonstrate how it is possible to construct a much larger
class of reducible proper conformal Killing tensors and Killing tensors than
permitted by the Koutras algorithms. In particular, by showing that all
conformal Killing tensors are reducible in conformally flat spaces, we have a
method of constructing all conformal Killing tensors (including all the Killing
tensors which will in general be irreducible) of conformally flat spaces using

The structural properties and star formation history of Leo T from deep LBT photometry
We present deep, wide-field g and r photometry of the transition type dwarf
galaxy Leo T, obtained with the blue arm of the Large Binocular Telescope. The
data confirm the presence of both very young (5
Gyr) stars. We study the structural properties of the old and young stellar
populations by preferentially selecting either population based on their color
and magnitude. The young population is significantly more concentrated than the
old population, with half-light radii of 104+-8 and 148+-16 pc respectively,
and their centers are slightly offset. Approximately 10% of the total stellar
mass is estimated to be represented by the young stellar population. Comparison
of the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) with theoretical isochrones as well as
numerical CMD-fitting suggest that star formation began over 10 Gyr ago and
continued in recent times until at least a few hundred Myr ago. The CMD-fitting
results are indicative of two distinct star formation bursts, with a quiescent
period around 3 Gyr ago, albeit at low significance. The results are consistent
with no metallicity evolution and [Fe/H] ~ -1.5 over the entire age of the
