A computer program for the analysis of profile roughness and its variation with scale is presented. The analysis is based on the calculation of the fractal dimension of the profile for selectable ranges of scale, performed through lineal regression method, that enables further statistical analysis. This program has been set up in order to study the weathering effects of experimental freezing cicles on mudrock samples

Brill-Noether loci for divisors on irregular varieties

WetakeupthestudyoftheBrill–NoetherlociWr(L,X):={η∈Pic0(X)|h0(L⊗η) ≥ r + 1}, where X is a smooth projective variety of dimension > 1, L ∈ Pic(X), and r ≥ 0 is an integer. By studying the infinitesimal structure of these loci and the Petri map (defined in analogy with the case of curves), we obtain lower bounds for h0(KD), where D is a divisor that moves linearly on a smooth projective variety X of maximal Albanese dimension. In this way we sharpen the results of [Xi] and we generalize them to dimension > 2. In the 2-dimensional case we prove an existence theorem: we define a Brill–Noether number ρ(C, r) for a curve C on a smooth surface X of maximal Albanese dimension and we prove, under some mild additional assumptions, that if ρ(C,r) ≥ 0 then Wr(C,X) is nonempty of dimension ≥ ρ(C,r). Inequalities for the numerical invariants of curves that do not move linearly on a surface of maximal Albanese dimension are obtained as an application of the previous results

The PP&S100 Project: Process Control as an Information System Instance

The Project PP&S100, Problem Posing & Solving, is part of a set of initiatives promoted by the General Directorate of the Italian Ministry of Education, Research and University, for supporting the many innovations that have recently affected curricula at the upper secondary level. Main goals of the project include strengthening computer science culture and enhancing its role as a scientific discipline; founding education processes on logics, mathematics and computer science weaved together to pursue an interdisciplinary scenario, building a culture of "problem posing and solving" by investing across a broad disciplinary group of subjects, ensuring growth of computer science based training of trainers and practicing activities within specific social networks and virtual learning environment to share learning materials, teaching supplies, mentoring and self-evaluation. This work presents a hierarchical conceptual model for "Computational Thinking" assumed by PP&S100, formalized according to the outcomes shown by information systems courses held at the Politecnico di Torino and validated using Process Control as an information system instanc

Effects of electronic correlation on X-Ray absorption and dichroic spectra at L2,3_{2,3} edge

We present a new theoretical approach to describe X-Ray absorption and Magnetic Circular Dichroism spectra in the presence of e-e correlation. Our approach provides an unified picture to include correlations in both charged and neutral excitations, namely in direct / inversion photoemission where electrons are removed/added, and photo absorption where electrons are promoted from core levels to empty states. We apply this approach to the prototypical case of L2,3_{2,3} edge of 3dd transition metals and we show that the inclusion of many body effects in the core level excitations is essential to reproduce, together with satellite structures in core level photoemission, the observed asymmetric line shapes in X-ray absorption and dichroic spectra.Comment: 3 figures, 5 pages, submitted to Phys. Use of Annual Self-Reseeding Legumes in an Oak Forest in Central Italy

    Get PDF
A trial has been carried out for three years in an oak coppice geometrically thinned out of Mediterranean Central Italy, about the functioning of a pastoral system made by four different resources: native pasture, subterranean clover (Trifolium brachycalycinum Katzn. et Morley) in pure stand, strips thinned out and firebreaks improved with oversown subclover, all grazed by sheep. Subclover increased the forage yield and improved the palatabilty of the pasture and the regularity of grazing; the higher biomass intake by animals reduced the quantity of dried biomass in summer and contributed to keep low either fire hazards or flame diffusion speed. Data underlined the importance of deferred grazing and of the combination of different native or improved resources on the seasonal distribution of production and animal intake

Total Synthesis of Asparenydiol by Two Sonogashira Cross-Coupling Reactions Promoted by Supported Pd and Cu Catalysts

Asparenydiol, which is an important natural compound with potential pharmacological activities, was synthesized through two Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by supported Pd and Cu catalysts and by a Mitsunobu etherification. The optimization of the Sonogashira couplings allowed the use of catalysts supported on different matrices with good results in terms of catalytic efficiency and yields
