    The first living specimen of the Rock goby (Gobius paganellus) in Dutch coastal waters is reported. It was found in the Eastern Scheldt in June 2005.     Performance of a connectionless protocol over ATM

    Recent studies show the existence of a demand for a connectionless broadband service. In order to cope with this demand, a connectionless protocol for the B-ISDN needs to be designed. Such a protocol should make use of ATM and the ATM Adaptation Layer. It needs to specify destination and bandwidth of connections to the ATM network without advance knowledge of the traffic that has to be transferred over these connection. A possible mechanism which can cope with this problem, the 'On-demand Connection with Delayed Release' (OCDR) mechanism, is described. Its eficient operation is based on the assumption that there exists a certain correlation between subsequently arriving CL packets. Two different arrival processes are used to evaluate the performance of the OCDR mechanism: a Poisson arrival process, and a Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) which models a bursty trafic source. Markov models of the OCDR mechanism have been constructed for both arrival processes. For the madel with Poisson arrivals, a closed form solution is presented. The model with MMPP arrivals is solved numerically.\ud Compared to a 'Permanent Connection' mechanism significant bandwidth reductions can be obtained provided that the offered trafic has a bursty nature. Furthermore, the OCDR mechanism has the advantageous property that the obtained average node delay is not strongly related to the intensity and burstiness of the offered trafic

    The ability of error recovery mechanisms to make the Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) satisfy real-time performance constraints in the presence of errors is analyzed. A complicating factor in these analyses is the rarity of the error occurrences, which makes direct simulation unattractive. Therefore, a fast simulation technique, called injection simulation, which makes it possible to analyze the performance of FDDI, including its fault tolerance behavior, was developed.     The presence of the nudibranch Facelina auriculata (O.F. Müller, 1776) on Eudendrium arbuscula Wright, 1857, in the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt, The Netherlands) is reported. This is the first documented record of E. arbuscula from the Netherlands. The change of name from Facelina coronata (Fornes & Goodsir, 1839) into F. auriculata (O.F. Müller, 1776) is discussed

    Large-scale HI in nearby radio galaxies: segregation in neutral gas content with radio source size

    We present results of a study of neutral hydrogen (HI) in a complete sample of nearby non-cluster radio galaxies. We find that radio galaxies with large amounts of extended HI (M_HI >= 10^9 M_solar) all have a compact radio source. The host galaxies of the more extended radio sources, all of Fanaroff & Riley type-I, do not contain these amounts of HI. We discuss several possible explanations for this segregation. The large-scale HI is mainly distributed in disk- and ring-like structures with sizes up to 190 kpc and masses up to 2 x 10^10 M_solar. The formation of these structures could be related to past merger events, although in some cases it may also be consistent with a cold-accretion scenario.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     How Dry Are Red Mergers?

    The focus of current research in galaxy evolution has increasingly turned to understanding the effect that mergers have on the evolution of systems on the red sequence. For those interactions purported to occur dissipationlessly (so called "dry mergers"), it would appear that the role of gas is minimal. However, if these mergers are not completely dry, then even low levels of gas may be detectable. The purpose of our study is to test whether early type galaxies with HI in or around them, or "wet" ellipticals, would have been selected as dry mergers by the criteria in van Dokkum (2005, AJ, 130, 2647). To that end, we examine a sample of 20 early types from the HI Rogues Gallery with neutral hydrogen in their immediate environs. Of these, the 15 brightest and reddest galaxies match the optical dry merger criteria, but in each case, the presence of HI means that they are not truly dry.Comment: 8 pages plus 1 table and 5 figures; accepted for publication in A
