    The Value Impact of New Residential Construction and Neighborhood Disinvestment on Residential Sales Price

    The topic of neighborhood redevelopment is central to residential appraisal and the lending process. We examine both the effect of neighborhood upgrading and decline, captured by subsidized new residential construction and sustained property tax delinquency respectively, on the sales price of one-to-two family homes. The research uses a two stage hedonic price model of 12,100 individual residential sales in Cleveland, Ohio during 1992-94. Results show a significant positive effect of 670onthesalespriceofexistinghousingforeachnewunitbuiltinaonetotwoblockarea.Adecreaseinsalespriceof670 on the sales price of existing housing for each new unit built in a one-to-two block area. A decrease in sales price of 778 is associated with a 1% increase in the tax delinquency rate. The spatial variability of these effects is also explored.

    Angiotensin II inhibits growth of cultured embryonic renomedullary interstitial cells through the AT2 receptor. The high abundance of angiotensin II (Ang II) AT2, relative to the AT1 receptor subtype in developing kidneys may be related to their potential as mediators of cell growth, although little evidence exists to support this concept. Renomedullary interstitial cells (RMICs) differentiate early in embryonic kidneys and are important in subsequent nephron development. These cells have been shown in vivo to possess AT2 binding sites, although the functional significance of these sites remains unknown. The aim of the current investigation was to examine the actions of Ang II on cultured embryonic renomedullary interstitial cells (ERMICs). 125I-[Sar1, Ile8]Ang II specifically bound to AT1 and AT2 receptors on ERMICs, and their mRNAs were detected by reverse transcription—polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Angiotensin II (10−6M) increased intracellular IP3 concentrations at 20 seconds, and decreased intracellular cAMP concentrations after 10 minutes. Angiotensin II (10−6M) induced an increase in [3H]thymidine incorporation, mediated through the AT1 receptor subtype. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF; 20 ng/ml) also increased 3[H]thymidine incorporation after 24 hours of treatment, an effect that was attenuated by subsequent addition of Ang II (10−6M). This antiproliferative action of Ang II was blocked by PD 123319 (10−6M), an AT2 receptor antagonist, and was not affected by losartan (10−6M), an AT1 receptor antagonist. These results indicate a dual role for Ang II in regulating ERMIC mitogenesis: a growth stimulating effect mediated by the AT1 receptor subtype, and an antiproliferative effect mediated by the AT2 receptor subtype

However, only in the second half of the XX century it has been acknowledged by the scientific community and the society as a whole. This work aims at compiling some of the scientific knowledge acquired over the years, with reference to the most relevant historical aspects, evolution of concepts, definition of abuse topologies, epidemiology and theoretical models. In addition, it addresses the relevance of the shift in paradigm towards viewing violence as a matter of public health, emphasizing the roles that professionals (namely health related) may assume in the battle against elder abuse. Finally, the forensic aspects of dealing with these cases in the context of a medico legal evaluation and the Portuguese judicial system are discussed

    Childhood cancer in the south Asian population of England (1990–1992)

    Cancer incidence in 1990–92 among English south Asian (residents with ethnic origins in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh) and non-south Asian children is compared. Standardized incidence ratios show significant overall excesses in south Asians (131), largely due to higher rates in south Asian boys, and specific excesses for leukaemia (141), lymphoid leukaemia (141), lymphoma (172) and hepatic tumours (375).     Breakdown, scaling and volt-ampere characteristics of low current micro-discharges

    Abstract We give preliminary results on the breakdown and low current limit of volt-ampere characteristics of simple parallel plate non-equilibrium dc discharges at standard (centimetre size) and micro-discharge conditions. Experiments with micro-discharges are reported attempting to establish the maintenance of E/N, pd and j/p 2 scalings at small dimensions down to 20 µm. It was found that it may not be possible to obtain properly the left-hand side of the Paschen curve. The possible causes are numerous but we believe that it is possible that long path prevention techniques do not work at high pressures. Nevertheless, the standard scaling laws seem to be maintained down to these dimensions which are consistent with simulations that predict violation of scaling below 10 µm. Volt-ampere characteristics are also presented and compared with those of the standard size discharges

    Application of Non-Eqilibrium Plasmas in Top-Down and Bottom-Up Nanotechnologies and Biomedicine

    In this paper we discuss how a better understanding of thermal and mainly non-thermal plasmas provides basis for their application in a number or nanotechnologies. One should bear in mind that one may design unique properties of plasmas thus affecting very directly properties of the resulting nanostructures. A number of examples where plasmas contribute to production of nanomaterials, modification of surfaces and functionalization at nanoscales are given here. Plasmas are not a panacea but in nanotechnology their application may be the best strategy to convert production of individual structures to massively parallel production that may become a viable industrial technology

    Lack of neuroinflammation in the HIV-1 transgenic rat: An [18 F]-DPA714 PET imaging study

    BACKGROUND: HIV-associated neuroinflammation is believed to be a major contributing factor in the development of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). In this study, we used micropositron emission tomography (PET) imaging to quantify neuroinflammation in HIV-1 transgenic rat (Tg), a small animal model of HIV, known to develop neurological and behavioral problems. METHODS: Dynamic [(18)F]DPA-714 PET imaging was performed in Tg and age-matched wild-type (WT) rats in three age groups: 3-, 9-, and 16-month-old animals. As a positive control for neuroinflammation, we performed unilateral intrastriatal injection of quinolinic acid (QA) in a separate group of WT rats. To confirm our findings, we performed multiplex immunofluorescent staining for Iba1 and we measured cytokine/chemokine levels in brain lysates of Tg and WT rats at different ages. RESULTS: [(18)F]DPA-714 uptake in HIV-1 Tg rat brains was generally higher than in age-matched WT rats but this was not statistically significant in any age group. [(18)F]DPA-714 uptake in the QA-lesioned rats was significantly higher ipsilateral to the lesion compared to contralateral side indicating neuroinflammatory changes. Iba1 immunofluorescence showed no significant differences in microglial activation between the Tg and WT rats, while the QA-lesioned rats showed significant activation. Finally, cytokine/chemokine levels in brain lysates of the Tg rats and WT rats were not significantly different. CONCLUSION: Microglial activation might not be the primary mechanism for neuropathology in the HIV-1 Tg rats. Although [(18)F]DPA-714 is a good biomarker of neuroinflammation, it cannot be reliably used as an in vivo biomarker of neurodegeneration in the HIV-1 Tg rat.
