    Revealed Distributional Preferences: Individuals vs. Teams

    We compare experimentally the revealed distributional preferences of individuals and teams in allocation tasks. We find that teams are significantly more benevolent than individuals in the domain of disadvantageous inequality while the benevolence in the domain of advantageous inequality is similar across decision makers. A consequence for the frequency of preference types is that while a substantial fraction of individuals is classified as inequality averse, this type disappears completely in teams. Spiteful types are markedly more frequent among individuals than among teams. On the other hand, by far more teams than individuals are classified as efficiency lovers

    We devise a new experimental game by nesting a voluntary contributions mechanism in a broader spectrum of incentive schemes. With it, we study tensions between egalitarianism, equity concerns, self-interest, and the need for incentives. In a 2x2 design, subjects either vote on or exogenously encounter incentive settings while assigned unequal incomes that are either task-determined or random. We find subjects’ voting to be mainly self-interested but also influenced by egalitarian and equity concerns, which sometimes cut in opposite directions.     Monte Carlo algorithm based on internal bridging moves for the atomistic simulation of thiophene oligomers and polymers

    We introduce a powerful Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm for the atomistic simulation of bulk models of oligo- and poly-thiophenes by redesigning MC moves originally developed for considerably simpler polymer structures and architectures, such as linear and branched polyethylene, to account for the ring structure of the thiophene monomer. Elementary MC moves implemented include bias reptation of an end thiophene ring, flip of an internal thiophene ring, rotation of an end thiophene ring, concerted rotation of three thiophene rings, rigid translation of an entire molecule, rotation of an entire molecule and volume fluctuation. In the implementation of all moves we assume that thiophene ring atoms remain rigid and strictly co-planar; on the other hand, inter-ring torsion and bond bending angles remain fully flexible subject to suitable potential energy functions. Test simulations with the new algorithm of an important thiophene oligomer, {\alpha}-sexithiophene ({\alpha}-6T), at a high enough temperature (above its isotropic-to-nematic phase transition) using a new united atom model specifically developed for the purpose of this work provide predictions for the volumetric, conformational and structural properties that are remarkably close to those obtained from detailed atomistic Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations using an all-atom model. The new algorithm is particularly promising for exploring the rich (and largely unexplored) phase behavior and nanoscale ordering of very long (also more complex) thiophene-based polymers which cannot be addressed by conventional MD methods due to the extremely long relaxation times characterizing chain dynamics in these systems

    A NEW APPROACH TO TEACHING NATURAL RESOURCE SAMPLING

    A basic undergraduate course in statistics is often not adequate for students in renewable natural resource programs such as wildlife, forestry, fisheries, and related subjects. A strong foundation in the basics of sampling in time and space of forest, vegetation, wildlife and fish populations is needed. A brief account of our experience in teaching such a course over the last three years along with progress on developing course-related material and activities is reported. This includes the development of: 1) computer-based simulations; 2) in-class participation simulations to illustrate the basic concepts of sampling in space and time; 3) exercises to introduce students to basic field sampling methods (quadrat, line and point sample units, mark/recapture, radio telemetry, etc.); and 4) an associated hypermedia text. From the beginning, emphasis is placed on cost-effectiveness and on the importance of sampling in the decision-making process. Students are required to develop their own sampling project, implement the project, present the results in an open forum, and prepare an associated report in the format of a scientific paper

    A case of a bilateral accessory digastric muscle

    Abnormalities of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle are rare but have received increased attention by radiologists in recent years in an attempt to avoid confusion with submental cysts or enlarged submental lymph nodes on CT or MR images. We present a case of bilateral accessory digastric muscles which fuse (partially) with the midline raphe of the mylohyoid muscle. Fibres from the right accessory anterior digastric muscle proceeded to decussate and join the mylohyoid muscle and the contralateral insertion of the digastric muscle. Embryological development and possible clinical consequences are discussed

    A previously undescribed variant of the confluence of sinuses

    An 8-year-old female with a history of chronic headaches and uncertain papilloedema was found to have a variant of the posterior intracranial dural venous sinuses on magnetic resonance imaging assessment of the brain. Magnetic resonance venography included in the imaging revealed a circular formation of the confluence of sinuses and absent right-sided transverse sinus. The confluence of sinuses is a highly variable structure; however, to the authors’ knowledge, a circular confluence of sinuses variant has not been reported in the literature
