Women's work choices in Kenya: the role of social institutions and household gender attitudes
This study considers the factors that influence women’s work behavior in Kenya. In particular, it examines whether gender attitudes and certain types of social institutions influence the probability of employment or type of employment for women. Using data from the Demographic and Health Survey of 2008–9, we find that religion and ethnicity are significant determinants of women’s employment in Kenya. While personal experience of female genital mutilation is insignificant, spousal age and education differences, as well as marital status (which reflect attitudes both in women’s natal and marital families), are significant determinants of women’s employment choices
Prediction of mortality rates in heart failure patients with data mining methods
Heart failure is one of the severe diseases which menace the human health and affectmillions of people. Half of all patients diagnosed with heart failure die within four years. For thepurpose of avoiding life-threatening situations and minimizing the costs, it is important to predictmortality rates of heart failure patients. As part of a HEIF-5 project, a data mining study wasconducted aiming specifically at extracting new knowledge from a group of patients suffering fromheart failure and using it for prediction of mortality rates. The methodology of knowledge discoveryin databases is analyzed within the framework of home telemonitoring. Several data mining methodssuch as a Bayesian network method, a decision tree method, a neural network method and a nearestneighbour method are employed. The accuracy for the data mining methods from the point of view ofavoiding life-threatening situations and minimizing the costs is discussed. It seems that the decisiontree method achieves the best accuracy results and is also interpretable for the clinicians
Abemaciclib in Combination with Single-Agent Options in Patients with Stage IV Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Phase Ib Study
Purpose: Abemaciclib, a dual inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6, has demonstrated preclinical activity in non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A multicenter, nonrandomized, open-label phase Ib study was conducted to test safety, MTD, pharmacokinetics, and preliminary antitumor activity of abemaciclib in combination with other therapies for treatment in patients with metastatic NSCLC.
Patients and Methods: An initial dose escalation phase was used to determine the MTD of twice-daily oral abemaciclib (150, 200 mg) plus pemetrexed, gemcitabine, or ramucirumab, followed by an expansion phase for each drug combination. Pemetrexed and gemcitabine were administered according to label. The abemaciclib plus ramucirumab study examined two dosing schedules.
Results: The three study parts enrolled 86 patients; all received ≥1 dose of combination therapy. Across arms, the most common treatment-emergent adverse events were fatigue, diarrhea, neutropenia, decreased appetite, and nausea. The trial did not identify an abemaciclib MTD for the combination with pemetrexed or gemcitabine but did so for the combination of abemaciclib with days 1 and 8 ramucirumab (8 mg/kg). Plasma sample analysis showed that abemaciclib did not influence the pharmacokinetics of the combination agents and the combination agents did not affect abemaciclib exposure. The disease control rate was 57% for patients treated with abemaciclib–pemetrexed, 25% for abemaciclib–gemcitabine, and 54% for abemaciclib–ramucirumab. Median progression-free survival was 5.55, 1.58, and 4.83 months, respectively.
Conclusions: Abemaciclib demonstrated an acceptable safety profile when dosed on a continuous twice-daily schedule in combination with pemetrexed, gemcitabine, or ramucirumab. Abemaciclib exposures remained consistent with those observed in single-agent studies
Autonomous clustering using rough set theory
This paper proposes a clustering technique that minimises the need for subjective
human intervention and is based on elements of rough set theory. The proposed algorithm is
unified in its approach to clustering and makes use of both local and global data properties to
obtain clustering solutions. It handles single-type and mixed attribute data sets with ease and
results from three data sets of single and mixed attribute types are used to illustrate the
technique and establish its efficiency
Higher cardiorespiratory fitness predicts long-term survival in patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction: the Henry Ford Exercise Testing (FIT) Project
Introduction: Higher cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is associated with improved exercise capacity and quality of life in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), but there are no large studies evaluating the association of HFpEF, CRF, and long-term survival. We therefore aimed to determine the association between CRF and all-cause mortality, in patients with HFpEF.
Material and methods: In the Henry Ford Exercise Testing (FIT) Project, 167 patients had baseline HFpEF, defined as a clinical diagnosis of heart failure with ejection fraction ≥ 50% on echocardiogram. The CRF was estimated from the peak workload (in METs) from a clinician-referred treadmill stress test and categorized as poor (1-4 METs), intermediate (5-6 METs), and moderate-high (≥ 7 METs). Additional analyses assessing the effect of HFpEF and CRF on mortality were also conducted, matching HFpEF patients to non-HFpEF patients using propensity scores.
Results: Mean age was 64 ±13 years, with 55% women, and 46% Black. Over a median follow-up of 9.7 (5.2-18.9) years, there were 103 deaths. In fully adjusted models, moderate-high CRF was associated with 63% lower mortality risk (HR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.18-0.73) compared to the poor-CRF group. In the propensity-matched cohort, HFpEF was associated with a HR of 2.3 (95% CI: 1.7-3.2) for mortality compared to non-HFpEF patients, which was attenuated to 1.8 (95% CI: 1.3-2.5) after adjusting for CRF.
Conclusions: Moderate-high CRF in patients with HFpEF is associated with improved survival, and differences in CRF partly explain the intrinsic risk of HFpEF. Randomized trials of interventions aimed at improving CRF in HFpEF are needed

Comparisons of host mitochondrial, nuclear and endosymbiont bacterial genes reveal cryptic fig wasp species and the effects of Wolbachia on host mtDNA evolution and diversity
Background
Figs and fig-pollinating wasp species usually display a highly specific one-to-one association. However, more and more studies have revealed that the "one-to-one" rule has been broken. Co-pollinators have been reported, but we do not yet know how they evolve. They may evolve from insect speciation induced or facilitated by Wolbachia which can manipulate host reproduction and induce reproductive isolation. In addition, Wolbachia can affect host mitochondrial DNA evolution, because of the linkage between Wolbachia and associated mitochondrial haplotypes, and thus confound host phylogeny based on mtDNA. Previous research has shown that fig wasps have the highest incidence of Wolbachia infection in all insect taxa, and Wolbachia may have great influence on fig wasp biology. Therefore, we look forward to understanding the influence of Wolbachia on mitochondrial DNA evolution and speciation in fig wasps.
Results
We surveyed 76 pollinator wasp specimens from nine Ficus microcarpa trees each growing at a different location in Hainan and Fujian Provinces, China. We found that all wasps were morphologically identified as Eupristina verticillata, but diverged into three clades with 4.22-5.28% mtDNA divergence and 2.29-20.72% nuclear gene divergence. We also found very strong concordance between E. verticillata clades and Wolbachia infection status, and the predicted effects of Wolbachia on both mtDNA diversity and evolution by decreasing mitochondrial haplotypes.
Conclusions
Our study reveals that the pollinating wasp E. verticillata on F. microcarpa has diverged into three cryptic species, and Wolbachia may have a role in this divergence. The results also indicate that Wolbachia strains infecting E. verticillata have likely resulted in selective sweeps on host mitochondrial DNA
Formyltetrahydrofolate Synthetase Gene Diversity in the Guts of Higher Termites with Different Diets and Lifestyles
In this study, we examine gene diversity for formyl-tetrahydrofolate synthetase (FTHFS), a key enzyme in homoacetogenesis, recovered from the gut microbiota of six species of higher termites. The "higher" termites (family Termitidae), which represent the majority of extant termite species and genera, engage in a broader diversity of feeding and nesting styles than the "lower" termites. Previous studies of termite gut homoacetogenesis have focused on wood-feeding lower termites, from which the preponderance of FTHFS sequences recovered were related to those from acetogenic treponemes. While sequences belonging to this group were present in the guts of all six higher termites examined, treponeme-like FTHFS sequences represented the majority of recovered sequences in only two species (a wood-feeding Nasutitermes sp. and a palm-feeding Microcerotermes sp.). The remaining four termite species analyzed (a Gnathamitermes sp. and two Amitermes spp. that were recovered from subterranean nests with indeterminate feeding strategies and a litter-feeding Rhynchotermes sp.) yielded novel FTHFS clades not observed in lower termites. These termites yielded two distinct clusters of probable purinolytic Firmicutes and a large group of potential homoacetogens related to sequences previously recovered from the guts of omnivorous cockroaches. These findings suggest that the gut environments of different higher termite species may select for different groups of homoacetogens, with some species hosting treponeme-dominated homoacetogen populations similar to those of wood-feeding, lower termites while others host Firmicutes-dominated communities more similar to those of omnivorous cockroaches
Selected Contemporary Challenges of Ageing Policy
Among the scholars trying to grasp the
nuances and trends of social policy, there are diverse perspectives,
resulting not only from the extensive knowledge of the authors on
the systematic approach to the issue of supporting older people but
also from the grounds of the represented social gerontology
schools. In the texts of Volume VII interesting are both distinct
and coherent elements presenting the role of local, regional and
global policies in the prism of the countries from which the
authors originate: the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia,
Poland, Slovakia, Italy, Turkey, and the United States.
The chapters show a wealth of methodological approaches
to the perception of social policy and its tools. In the texts there
are issues related to the idea of active ageing, discrimination
against older people in the workplace, comparability of solutions
friendly to employment of older adults in the Czech Republic,
Poland, and Slovakia as well as focused on the importance of
educational forms (universities of the third age, senior clubs, folk
high schools, and other non-formal solutions) determining an
active life in old age.
This monograph also attempted to answer the question
regarding how to transfer the idea of intergenerational learning
into the realm of practice. This issue complements the chapter on
the implementation of intergenerational programs in institutions
providing long-term care support. The book also outlines a public
policy on ageing in the perspective of the changes over the last
few decades (Slovenia) and the case demonstrating solutions to
accelerate self-reliance as a key to active ageing (Turkey)
Ultrafast supercontinuum spectroscopy of carrier multiplication and biexcitonic effects in excited states of PbS quantum dots
We examine the multiple exciton population dynamics in PbS quantum dots by
ultrafast spectrally-resolved supercontinuum transient absorption (SC-TA). We
simultaneously probe the first three excitonic transitions over a broad
spectral range. Transient spectra show the presence of first order bleach of
absorption for the 1S_h-1S_e transition and second order bleach along with
photoinduced absorption band for 1P_h-1P_e transition. We also report evidence
of the one-photon forbidden 1S_{h,e}-1P_{h,e} transition. We examine signatures
of carrier multiplication (multiexcitons for the single absorbed photon) from
analysis of the first and second order bleaches, in the limit of low absorbed
photon numbers (~ 10^-2), at pump energies from two to four times the
semiconductor band gap. The multiexciton generation efficiency is discussed
both in terms of a broadband global fit and the ratio between early- to
long-time transient absorption signals.. Analysis of population dynamics shows
that the bleach peak due to the biexciton population is red-shifted respect the
single exciton one, indicating a positive binding energy.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
