Effect of Noble Element Alloying on Passivity and Passivity Breakdown of Ni
Welding of stainless steels can generate welding fumes containing carcinogenic hexavalent chromium (Cr^+6). To mitigate this problem, a new Ni-Cu-Pd welding consumable alloy has been developed. The addition of a small amount of Cu and Pd in Ni enhances the galvanic compatibility of Ni with stainless steels and improves its localized corrosion behavior. In this paper, the artificial pit electrode technique and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to study the benefits of Cu and Pd alloying. The passive film on Ni-10Cu-1Pd alloy mainly consisted of outer Ni-hydroxide and inner oxide, and the noble elements Pd and Cu apparently did not contribute to the formation of the passive film. However, Pd catalyzed the reduction of Cu at the bottom of artificial pits, which enhanced the cathodic reaction and thus ennobled the protection potential, making stable pit growth more difficult. This catalytic effect of Pd also prevented the propagation of deep pits in a test using a thin foil crevice sample.Financial support of the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) through project WP-1415 is greatly appreciated
Nonvolatile memories using deep traps formed in HfO₂ by Nb ion implantation
We report nonvolatile memories (NVMs) based on deep-energy trap levels formed in HfO₂ by metal ion implantation. A comparison of Nb- and Ta-implanted samples shows that suitable charge-trapping centers are formed in Nb-implanted samples, but not in Ta-implanted samples. This is consistent with density-functional theory calculations which predict that only Nb will form deep-energy levels in the bandgap of HfO₂. Photocurrent spectroscopy exhibits characteristics consistent with one of the trap levels predicted in these calculations. Nb-implanted samples showing memory windows in capacitance–voltage (V) curves always exhibit current (I) peaks in I–V curves, indicating that NVM effects result from deep traps in HfO₂. In contrast, Ta-implanted samples show dielectric breakdowns during the I–V sweeps between 5 and 11 V, consistent with the fact that no trap levels are present. For a sample implanted with a fluence of 10¹³Nb cm⁻², the charge losses after 10⁴ s are ∼9.8 and ∼25.5% at room temperature (RT) and 85°C, respectively, and the expected charge loss after 10 years is ∼34% at RT, very promising for commercial NVMs
The Globular Cluster System of M60 (NGC 4649). II. Kinematics of the Globular Cluster System
We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system in the
giant elliptical galaxy (gE) M60 in the Virgo cluster. Using the photometric
and spectroscopic database of 121 GCs (83 blue GCs and 38 red GCs), we have
investigated the kinematics of the GC system. We have found that the M60 GC
system shows a significant overall rotation. The rotation amplitude of the blue
GCs is slightly smaller than or similar to that of the red GCs, and their
angles of rotation axes are similar. The velocity dispersions about the mean
velocity and about the best fit rotation curve for the red GCs are marginally
larger than those for the blue GCs. Comparison of observed stellar and GC
velocity dispersion profiles with those calculated from the stellar mass
profile shows that the mass-to-light ratio should be increased as the
galactocentric distance increases, indicating the existence of an extended dark
matter halo. The entire sample of GCs in M60 is found to have a tangentially
biased velocity ellipsoid unlike the GC systems in other gEs. Two subsamples
appear to have different velocity ellipsoids. The blue GC system has a modest
tangentially biased velocity ellipsoid, while the red GC system has a modest
radially biased or an isotropic velocity ellipsoid. From the comparison of the
kinematic properties of the M60 GC system to those of other gEs (M87, M49, NGC
1399, NGC 5128, and NGC 4636), it is found that the velocity dispersion of the
blue GC system is similar to or larger than that of the red GC system except
for M60, and the rotation of the GC system is not negligible. The entire sample
of each GC system shows an isotropic velocity ellipsoid except for M60, while
the subsamples show diverse velocity ellipsoids. We discuss the implication of

Collective resonance modes of Josephson vortices in sandwiched stack of BiSrCaCuO intrinsic Josephson junctions
We observed splitting of the low-bias vortex-flow branch in a
dense-Josephson-vortex state into multiple sub-branches in current-voltage
characteristics of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) of
BiSrCaCuO single crystals in the long-junction limit.
Each sub-branch corresponds to a plasma mode in serially coupled Josephson
junctions. Splitting into low-bias linear sub-branches with a spread in the
slopes and the inter-sub-branch mode-switching character are in good
quantitative agreement with the prediction of the weak but finite
inter-junction capacitive-coupling model incorporated with the inductive
coupling. This suggests the importance of the role of the capacitive coupling

Benchmarks of subcriticality in accelerator-driven system at Kyoto University Critical Assembly
Basic research on the accelerator-driven system is conducted by combining U-235-fueled and Th-232-loaded cores in the Kyoto University Critical Assembly with the pulsed neutron generator (14 MeV neutrons) and the proton beam accelerator (100 MeV protons with a heavy metal target). The results of experimental subcriticality are presented with a wide range of subcriticality level between near critical and 10,000 pcm, as obtained by the pulsed neutron source method, the Feynman-alpha method, and the neutron source multiplication method
Duality of Quasilocal Black Hole Thermodynamics
We consider T-duality of the quasilocal black hole thermodynamics for the
three-dimensional low energy effective string theory. Quasilocal thermodynamic
variables in the first law are explicitly calculated on a general axisymmetric
three-dimensional black hole solution and corresponding dual one. Physical
meaning of the dual invariance of the black hole entropy is considered in terms

Towards A Dynamic QoS-aware Over-The-Top Video Streaming in LTE
We present a study of traffic behavior of two popular over-the-top (OTT) video streaming services (YouTube and Netflix). Our analysis is conducted on different mobile devices (iOS and Android) over various wireless networks (Wi-Fi, 3G and LTE) under dynamic network conditions. Our measurements show that the video players frequently discard a large amount of video content although it is successfully delivered to a client. We first investigate the root cause of this unwanted behavior. Then, we propose a Quality-of-Service (QoS)-aware video streaming architecture in Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks to reduce the waste of network resource and improve user experience. The architecture includes a selective packet discarding mechanism, which can be placed in packet data network gateways (P-GW). In addition, our QoS-aware rules assist video players in selecting an appropriate resolution under a fluctuating channel condition. We monitor network condition and configure QoS parameters to control availability of the maximum bandwidth in real time. In our experimental setup, the proposed platform shows up to 20.58% improvement in saving downlink bandwidth and improves user experience by reducing buffer underflow period to an average of 32 seconds
Orientifolds of Matrix theory and Noncommutative Geometry
We study explicit solutions for orientifolds of Matrix theory compactified on
noncommutative torus. As quotients of torus, cylinder, Klein bottle and
M\"obius strip are applicable as orientifolds. We calculate the solutions using
Connes, Douglas and Schwarz's projective module solution, and investigate
twisted gauge bundle on quotient spaces as well. They are Yang-Mills theory on
noncommutative torus with proper boundary conditions which define the geometry

Mobile Video Is Inefficient: A Traffic Analysis
Video streaming on mobile devices is on the rise. According to recent reports, mobile video streaming traffic accounted for 52.8% of total mobile data traffic in 2011, and it is forecast to reach 66.4% in 2015. We analyzed the network traffic behaviors of the two most popular HTTP-based video streaming services: YouTube and Netflix. Our research indicates that the network traffic behavior depends on factors such as the type of device, multimedia applications in use and network conditions. Furthermore, we found that a large part of the downloaded video content can be unaccepted by a video player even though it is successfully delivered to a client. This unwanted behavior often occurs when the video player changes the resolution in a fluctuating network condition and the playout buffer is full while downloading a video. Some of the measurements show that the discarded data may exceed 35% of the total video content
