Cordless Global Positioning System (GPS) Applications to Multi-Path (CGAMP) is meeting the challenge of exploiting the L-band signals from the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites for the measurement of the impulse response of radio transmission channels over space-Earth paths. This approach was originally suggested by E. K. Smith and has been pursued by J. Lemmon, without an affordable implementation being identifiable. In addition to the high cost of a suitable P code correlating GPS receiver, there is also the major impediment of the often announced Department of Defense policy of selective availability/anti-spoof (SA/AS) that clouds reliable access to the wideband (20 MHz) P channel of the GPS signals without cryptographic access. Diabetes insipidus and Guillain-Barré-like syndrome following CAR-T cell therapy: a case report
Background: Immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) is a common adverse event of CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy. Other neurological adverse events, however, have not methodically been described and studied. Furthermore, safety data on CAR-T cell therapy in patients with central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma remain limited.
Main body: We here report occurrence of a Guillain-Barré-like syndrome (GBS) and central diabetes insipidus (cDI) following tisagenlecleucel therapy for relapsed high-grade lymphoma with CNS involvement. Both complications were refractory to standard treatment of ICANS. Weakness of respiratory muscles required mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy while cDI was treated with desmopressin substitution for several weeks. Muscle-nerve biopsy and nerve conduction studies confirmed an axonal pattern of nerve damage. T cell-rich infiltrates and detection of the CAR transgene in muscle-nerve sections imply a direct or indirect role of CAR-T cell-mediated inflammation. In line with current treatment guidelines for GBS, intravenous immunoglobulin was administered and gradual but incomplete recovery was observed over the course of several months.
Conclusions: This case report highlights the risk of rare but severe neurological adverse events, such as acute GBS or cDI, in patients treated with CAR-T cells. It further underlines the importance of appropriate patient surveillance and systematic reporting of rare complications to eventually improve treatment
The pH of the skin surface and its impact on the barrier function
The `acid mantle' of the stratum corneum seems to be important for both permeability barrier formation and cutaneous antimicrobial defense. However, the origin of the acidic pH, measurable on the skin surface, remains conjectural. Passive and active influencing factors have been proposed, e. g. eccrine and sebaceous secretions as well as proton pumps. In recent years, numerous investigations have been published focusing on the changes in the pH of the deeper layers of the stratum corneum, as well as on the influence of physiological and pathological factors. The pH of the skin follows a sharp gradient across the stratum corneum, which is suspected to be important in controlling enzymatic activities and skin renewal. The skin pH is affected by a great number of endogenous factors, e. g. skin moisture, sweat, sebum, anatomic site, genetic predisposition and age. In addition, exogenous factors like detergents, application of cosmetic products, occlusive dressings as well as topical antibiotics may influence the skin pH. Changes in the pH are reported to play a role in the pathogenesis of skin diseases like irritant contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, ichthyosis, acne vulgaris and Candida albicans infections. Therefore, the use of skin cleansing agents, especially synthetic detergents with a pH of about 5.5, may be of relevance in the prevention and treatment of those skin diseases. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Characterization of young and aged ferrets as animal models for SARS-CoV-2 infection with focus on neutrophil extracellular traps
Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are net-like structures released by activated neutrophils upon infection [e.g., severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)] as part of the innate immune response that have protective effects by pathogen entrapment and immobilization or result in detrimental consequences for the host due to the massive release of NETs and their impaired degradation by nucleases like DNase-1. Higher amounts of NETs are associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity and are a risk factor for severe disease outcome. The objective of our study was to investigate NET formation in young versus aged ferrets to evaluate their value as translational model for SARS-CoV-2-infection and to correlate different NET markers and virological parameters. In each of the two groups (young and aged), nine female ferrets were intratracheally infected with 1 mL of 106 TCID50/mL SARS-CoV-2 (BavPat1/2020) and euthanized at 4, 7, or 21 days post-infection. Three animals per group served as negative controls. Significantly more infectious virus and viral RNA was found in the upper respiratory tract of aged ferrets. Interestingly, cell-free DNA and DNase-1 activity was generally higher in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) but significantly lower in serum of aged compared to young ferrets. In accordance with these data, immunofluorescence microscopy revealed significantly more NETs in lungs of aged compared to young infected ferrets. The association of SARS-CoV-2-antigen in the respiratory mucosa and NET markers in the nasal conchae, but the absence of virus antigen in the lungs, confirms the nasal epithelium as the major location for virus replication as described for young ferrets. Furthermore, a strong positive correlation was found between virus shedding and cell-free DNA or the level of DNAse-1 activity in aged ferrets. Despite the increased NET formation in infected lungs of aged ferrets, the animals did not show a strong NET phenotype and correlation among tested NET markers. Therefore, ferrets are of limited use to study SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis associated with NET formation. Nevertheless, the mild to moderate clinical signs, virus shedding pattern, and the lung pathology of aged ferrets confirm those animals as a relevant model to study age-dependent COVID-19 pathogenesis
Nucleon to Delta Weak Excitation Amplitudes in the Non-relativistic Quark Model
We investigate the nucleon to Delta(1232) vector and axial vector amplitudes
in the non-relativistic quark model of the Isgur-Karl variety. A particular
interest is to investigate the SU(6) symmetry breaking, due to color hyperfine
interaction. We compare the theoretical estimates to recent experimental
