Shifted phase of EEG cross-frequency coupling in individuals with Phelan-McDermid syndrome

Background Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS) is a rare condition caused by deletion or mutation of the SHANK3 gene. Individuals with PMS frequently present with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, and other neurodevelopmental challenges. Electroencephalography (EEG) can provide a window into network-level function in PMS. Methods Here, we analyze EEG data collected across multiple sites in individuals with PMS (n = 26) and typically developing individuals (n = 15). We quantify oscillatory power, alpha-gamma phase-amplitude coupling strength, and phase bias, a measure of the phase of cross frequency coupling thought to reflect the balance of feedforward (bottom-up) and feedback (top-down) activity. Results We find individuals with PMS display increased alpha-gamma phase bias (U = 3.841, p < 0.0005), predominantly over posterior electrodes. Most individuals with PMS demonstrate positive overall phase bias while most typically developing individuals demonstrate negative overall phase bias. Among individuals with PMS, strength of alpha-gamma phase-amplitude coupling was associated with Sameness, Ritualistic, and Compulsive behaviors as measured by the Repetitive Behavior Scales-Revised (Beta = 0.545, p = 0.011). Conclusions Increased phase bias suggests potential circuit-level mechanisms underlying phenotype in PMS, offering opportunities for back-translation of findings into animal models and targeting in clinical trials

Operation Allelopathy: An Experiment Investigating an Alternative to Synthetic Agrochemicals

Synthetic herbicides represent a serious problem in modern agriculture because they are not biodegradable and can accumulate in the soil and in the groundwater, a situation that allows them to enter the trophic chain and ultimately leads to human exposure. Allelopathic chemicals offer an effective alternative to the synthetic compounds. The aim of this experiment is to highlight the differences between chemical and biological control of diseases in crops and to demonstrate the use of natural fungicides and herbicides as alternatives to synthetic chemicals. The experiment involves an evaluation by students of the potential of plant extracts as an alternative to synthetic agrochemicals to identify new ecological farming techniques that could be applied in agriculture. In an effort to encourage 1800 students in high school (14 to 16 years old) to have an interest in science, technology, and innovation, the third edition of the Summer Science Campus was organized by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports with support from the foundation Obra Social “la Caixa”

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate gender and age distribution and the importance of imaging modalities in the evaluation and management of thyroid nodular disease in Albania nowadays. Material and method: The study analyzed the results of 310 patients (N=257 women; N=53 men), assessed at U. O. Clinic, American Hospital and Hygiea Hospital, Tirana, Albania during one year period; May 2015 – May 2016. The average age in the sample was 45.6 years. Thyroid nodules were found in 221 cases (185 females and 36 males). The patients had a standard ultrasound (US) of the thyroid; scintigraphy (SC) and ultrasound-guide fine needle aspiration biopsy (US-FNAB) when indicated. Results: The study shows that nodular disease of the thyroid was found in 84 % of women patients, and in 16 % of men patients. The largest presence of nodules was at the age group of 41-49 years. Moreover, this survey showed that ultrasound can help to distinguish nodules that are definitely benign and those with suspicious features that may require further investigation under FNAB. Some statistically significant connections were found between ultrasound characteristics and FNAB. Conclusion: Females were vast majority of patients as in regards of gender with 84 % of total sample population in the study of 310 subjects. And group age of 41-49 years old were more affected. Ultrasound and other imaging modalities are reliable methods for diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules, including patients' selection to undergo through FNAB. SC was indicated to evaluate the functional features of a nodule, especially in the presence of a low TSH value. In Albania these modalities are now used by many trained medical staff thus offering quality medical service to our patients over all. Physiological and biochemical parameters: new tools to screen barley root exudates allelopathic potential (*Hordeum vulgare* L. subsp. *vulgare*

peer reviewedMorphological markers/traits are often used in the detection of allelopathic stress, but optical signals including chlorophyll a fluorescence emission could be useful in developing new screening techniques. In this context, the allelopathic effect of barley (Hordeum vulgare subsp. vulgare) root exudates (three modern varieties and three landraces) were assessed on the morphological (root and shoot length, biomass accumulation), physiological (Fv/Fm and F0), and biochemical (chlorophyll and protein contents) variables of great brome (Bromus diandrus Roth., syn. Bromus rigidus Roth. subsp. gussonii Parl.). All the measured traits were affected when great brome was grown in a soil substrate in which barley plants had previously developed for 30 days before being removed. The response of receiver plants was affected by treatment with activated charcoal, dependent on barley genotype and on the nature of the growing substrate. The inhibitory effect was lower with the addition of the activated charcoal suggesting the release of putative allelochemicals from barley roots into the soil. The barley landraces were more toxic than modern varieties and their effect was more pronounced in sandy substrate than in silty clay sand substrate. In our investigation, the chlorophyll content and Fv/Fm were the most correlated variables with barley allelopathic potential. These two parameters might be considered as effective tools to quantify susceptibility to allelochemical inhibitors in higher plants

How to please voters without alienating friends? Parties, organised interests and advocacy coalitions in Swiss immigration policy

    No full text
This article seeks to explain why and how political parties adopt more restrictive migration policy positions by using Paul Sabatier’s Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF). While a number of studies have focused almost exclusively on electoral factors to explain this anti-immigration turn, this article argues that policies and cooperation constraints with organised interests for purposes of coalition maintenance are also fundamental factors to understand change in party positions. Using the Swiss case as an empirical application, the article first shows how an increasingly anti-immigration policy discourse by parties has been triggered by a series of exogenous shocks (economic crisis, European integration and changes in partisan power relationships). Within advocacy coalitions, parties have sought to accommodate changing voter preferences with longstanding connections with organised interests. Centre-right parties have turned to an ever more restrictive stance on selective aspects of immigration policy (third country migration, asylum, access to citizenship) without challenging high levels of EU labour migration so central for employers. Social Democrats, for their part, have had to negotiate between the preferences of their middle–class voters keen on multiculturalism and those of trade unions whose base has become increasingly opposed to migration
