Non-positivity of the Wigner function and bounds on associated integrals
The Wigner function shares several properties with classical distribution
functions on phase space, but is not positive-definite. The integral of the
Wigner function over a given region of phase space can therefore lie outside
the interval [0,1]. The problem of finding best-possible upper and lower bounds
for a given region is the problem of finding the greatest and least eigenvalues
of an associated Hermitian operator. Exactly solvable examples are described,

Correspondence between one- and two-equation models for solute\ud transport in two-region heterogeneous porous media
In this work, we study the transient behavior of upscaled models for solute transport in two-region porous media. We focus on the following three models: (1) a time non-local, two-equation model (2eq-nlt). This model does not rely on time constraints and, therefore, is particularly useful in the short-time regime, when the time scale of interest (t) is smaller than the characteristic time (T1) for the relaxation of the effective macroscale parameters (i.e., when t ≤ T1); (2) a time local, two-equation model (2eq). This model can be adopted when (t) is significantly larger than (T1) (i.e., when t » T1); and (3) a one-equation, time-asymptotic formulation (1eq∞). This model can be adopted when (t) is significantly larger than the time scale (T2) associated with exchange processes between the two regions (i.e., when t » T2). In order to obtain some physical insight into this transient behavior, we combine a theoretical approach based on the analysis of spatial moments with numerical and analytical results in simple cases. The main result of this paper is to show that there is weak long-time convergence of the solution of (2eq) toward the solution of (1eq∞) in terms of standardized moments but, interestingly, not in terms of centered moments. Physically, our interpretation of this result is that the spreading of the solute is dominating higher order non-zero perturbations in the asymptotic regime

Oscillating-flow regenerator test rig: Woven screen and metal felt results
We present correlating expressions, in terms of Reynolds or Peclet numbers, for friction factors, Nusselt numbers, enhanced axial conduction ratios, and overall heat flux ratios in four porous regenerator samples representative of stirling cycle regenerators: two woven screen samples and two random wire samples. Error estimates and comparison of data with others suggest our correlations are reliable, but we need to test more samples over a range of porosities before our results will become generally useful
A Coronal Hole's Effects on CME Shock Morphology in the Inner Heliosphere
We use STEREO imagery to study the morphology of a shock driven by a fast
coronal mass ejection (CME) launched from the Sun on 2011 March 7. The source
region of the CME is located just to the east of a coronal hole. The CME ejecta
is deflected away from the hole, in contrast with the shock, which readily
expands into the fast outflow from the coronal hole. The result is a CME with
ejecta not well centered within the shock surrounding it. The shock shape
inferred from the imaging is compared with in situ data at 1 AU, where the
shock is observed near Earth by the Wind spacecraft, and at STEREO-A. Shock
normals computed from the in situ data are consistent with the shock morphology

The great outdoors: how a green exercise environment can benefit all
The studies of human and environment interactions usually consider the extremes of environment on individuals or how humans affect the environment. It is well known that physical activity improves both physiological and psychological well-being, but further evidence is required to ascertain how different environments influence and shape health. This review considers the declining levels of physical activity, particularly in the Western world, and how the environment may help motivate and facilitate physical activity. It also addresses the additional physiological and mental health benefits that appear to occur when exercise is performed in an outdoor environment. However, people's connectedness to nature appears to be changing and this has important implications as to how humans are now interacting with nature. Barriers exist, and it is important that these are considered when discussing how to make exercise in the outdoors accessible and beneficial for all. The synergistic combination of exercise and exposure to nature and thus the 'great outdoors' could be used as a powerful tool to help fight the growing incidence of both physical inactivity and non-communicable disease. © 2013 Gladwell et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
Updating predictive accident models of modern rural single carriageway A-roads
Reliable predictive accident models (PAMs) are essential to design and maintain safe road networks and yet the models most commonly used in the UK were derived using data collected 20 to 30 years ago. Given that the national personal injury accident total fell by some 30% in the last 25 years, while road traffic increased by over 60%, significant errors in scheme appraisal and evaluation based on the models currently in use seem inevitable. In this paper the temporal transferability of PAMs for modern rural single carriageway A-roads is investigated and their predictive performance is evaluated against a recent data set. Despite the age of these models, the PAMs for predicting the total accidents provide a remarkably good fit to recent data and these are more accurate than models where accidents are disaggregated by type. The performance of the models can be improved by calibrating them against recent data
