    The First Results for a New Layout of the Stay Cables for Great Span Bridges

    AbstractThe air-elastic vibrations of structures induce fluctuating stresses that lead to fatigue damage accumulation and may determine structural failure without exceeding ultimate strength This paper proposes a new layout of stay cables to be used in the construction or the retrofitting of long span bridges, capable of mitigating the air-elastic problems due to environmental vibrations such as the rain-wind excitations. The structural scheme adopted was derived from the critical conditions in terms of stability obtained by referring to lateral suspension cables stayed bridge with two planes of fan pattern stay cables. The new layout consists in implementing an additional plane of cable stays placed symmetrically just under the deck bridge. The final layout of the cable stays was identified as “duplex”. The numerical investigation was carried out in the frequency domain. The results obtained show a sensible increasing of stiffness, as well as a reduction of the natural period of vibrations. In the analysis the deck was considered as thin and very light. The Duplex layout had, also, permitted to mitigate the wind effects, because the presence of the inferior stay cables simulate the viscous dampers

    MEAT QUALITY OF LOCAL AND HYBRID RABBITS

    pH, colour and oxidative status were evaluated to study the effect of rabbit genotype on meat quality. Commercial Hybrids, selected for high growth rate and a local population, characterized by slow growing, were used. Meat quality characteristics of L. lumborum and B. femoris muscles showed significant differences between genotypes. Local population had higher pHu values but lower pH fall values than Hybrids. Hybrids showed higher lightness values and TBARS contents than local population. Meat quality parameters were influenced by genotype. The differences between genotypes could be related to the different degree of maturity because the rabbits, in relation to the different growth rate, were slaughtered at the same weight but at different age

    Neuroprotective Effects of Physical Activity via the Adaptation of Astrocytes

    The multifold benefits of regular physical exercise have been largely demonstrated in human and animal models. Several studies have reported the beneficial effects of physical activity, both in peripheral tissues and in the central nervous system (CNS). Regular exercise improves cognition, brain plasticity, neurogenesis and reduces the symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases, making timeless the principle of "mens sana in corpore sano" (i.e., a healthy mind in a healthy body). Physical exercise promotes morphological and functional changes in the brain, acting not only in neurons but also in astrocytes, which represent the most numerous glial cells in the brain. The multiple effects of exercise on astrocytes comprise the increased number of new astrocytes, the maintenance of basal levels of catecholamine, the increase in glutamate uptake, the major release of trophic factors and better astrocytic coverage of cerebral blood vessels. The purpose of this review is to highlight the effects of exercise on brain function, emphasize the role of astrocytes in the healthy CNS, and provide an update for a better understanding of the effects of physical exercise in the modulation of astrocyte function

    Parkin isoforms expression in lung adenocarcinoma

    PARK2, also known as parkin, is a gene mutated in autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism and it has been shown to exhibit E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. However it seems to fulfill also a wide spectrum of protective functions. Recent studies have demonstrated that parkin is an important regulator of process that maintain mitochondrial quality and it is also implicated in proteasomal degradation of toxic substrates. This gene has been also shown to be genetically altered and/or aberrantly expressed in a wide variety of human cancers including lung cancer (Cesari et al., 2003; Veeriah S. et al., 2010). Although many alternatively spliced isoforms have been identified, until now studies have been focused on the full-length isoform (D’Agata and Cavallaro, 2004). To characterize the role of parkin isoforms in lung tumorigenesis we analyzed their expression pattern in human lung adenocarcinomas. These data were correlated to their expression pattern either in human lung epithelial carcinoma (A549) or in human normal bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cell lines. Western blot and immunofluorescence analyses were performed by using two antibodies recognizing different domains of the full length protein. Immunoblots showed that lung adenocarcinomas express parkin isoforms of 50, 37 and 20 kDa. Their expressions were significantly increased in A549 as compared to BEAS-2B, suggesting that parkin isoforms might be involved in cancer progression. In order to characterize some functions of these isoforms, both cell lines were cultured in complete medium or serum starved medium and treated with the proteasome inhibitor MG132 or with carbonyl cyanide 3- clorophenylhydrazone (CCCP), a uncoupling agent that dissipates the mitochondrial membrane. Data obtained revealed that each treatment affects pattern expression of parkin isoforms. These results suggest that some parkin isoforms might be molecular markers of lung adenocarcinoma

    Parkin isoforms expression in gliomas

    Parkin (PARK2) is one of the largest genes in the human genome encoding for an E3 ubiquitin ligase. Its mutation is the cause of early-onset Parkinson’s disease, but recently it is linked to other pathologies including cancer. Parkin acts as a tumor suppressor. It displays a wide neuroprotective activity by promoting the removal of damaged mitochondria via mitophagy and increasing proteasomal degradation of toxic substrates. PARK2 primary transcript undergoes to an extensive alternative splicing, which enhances transcriptomic diversification and protein diversity in tissues and cells. To date, GenBank lists 26 human PARK2 transcripts corresponding to 21 different alternative splice variants. These transcripts show different expression patterns and encode for proteins with different functions, molecular weight and isoelectric point. Previous studies identified inactivating somatic mutations and frequent intragenic deletions of PARK2 in human cancers including gliomas (Veeriah et al., 2010). Recently, it has been demonstrated that Parkin pathway activation is predictive for the survival outcome of patients with glioma (Yeo et al., 2012). However, these papers focused on the expression of full length Parkin. In the present work we analyzed the expression pattern of Parkin isoforms in astrocytomas of different grade and we investigated their functions in a human glioblastoma multiforme cell line. Immunoblotting analysis by using two specific antibodies revealed that Parkin expression is generally higher in malignant glioblastoma than in less invasive astrocytomas, indicating a correlation between expression pattern of Parkin isoforms and tumor malignancy. Serum deprivation or treatment with a proteosome inhibitor MG132 or with carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP), an uncoupling agent that dissipates the cells mitochondrial membrane potential, increased expression of 100-55-50 kDa parkin isoforms in glioma cells as compared to controls. These results, consistent with other studies, demonstrated a functional connection between Parkin expression, mitochondrial integrity and endoplasmic reticulum stress (Bouman et al., 2011). Parkin isoforms expression was also confirmed by confocal microscopy analysis. These results suggest that the characterization of some PARK2 isoforms may be usefull clinically to develop a prognostic tool in patients with brain tumor

    In the region between Valtellina and Lake Como in the Central Italian Alps, one can visit, in a relatively small area, some of the best examples of mountain geomorphological landscapes of Italy. Eight specific sites-showing peculiar glacial, periglacial, structural, gravity-induced and erosional landforms-have been selected to illustrate how different landscapes may originate from geomorphological modelling of different lithotypes in different morphogenetic systems. These eight sites are exemplary cases in which significant evidence of past and current climatic and structural conditions characterising this region is exhibited

    A simple model to evaluate ice melt over the ablation area of glaciers in the Central Karakoram National Park, Pakistan

    This study provides an estimate of fresh water derived from ice melt for the ablation areas of glaciers in the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP), Pakistan. In the CKNP there are ~700 glaciers, covering ~4600 km2, with widespread debris cover (518 km2). To assess meltwater volume we applied a distributed model able to describe both debris-covered and debris-free ice ablation. The model was calibrated using data collected in the field in the CKNP area and validated by comparison with ablation data collected in the field, independent of the data used in building the model. During 23 July\u20139 August 2011, the mean model-estimated ablation in the CKNP was 0.024 m w.e./ d in debris covered areas and 0.037 m w.e./ d in debris-free areas. We found a mean error of +0.01 m w.e. (corresponding to 2%) and a root-mean-square error equal to 0.09 m w.e. (17%). According to our model, the ablation areas of all the glaciers in the CKNP produced a water volume of 1.963 km3 during the study period. Finally, we performed several sensitivity tests for assessing the impact of the input data variations

    Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter Infection Mortality Rate and Length of Hospitalization

    Acinetobacter infections have increased and gained attention because of the organism’s prolonged environmental survival and propensity to develop antimicrobial drug resistance. The effect of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter infection on clinical outcomes has not been reported. A retrospective, matched cohort investigation was performed at 2 Baltimore hospitals to examine outcomes of patients with MDR Acinetobacter infection compared with patients with susceptible Acinetobacter infections and patients without Acinetobacter infections. Multivariable analysis controlling for severity of illness and underlying disease identified an independent association between patients with MDR Acinetobacter infection (n = 96) and increased hospital and intensive care unit length of stay compared with 91 patients with susceptible Acinetobacter infection (odds ratio [OR] 2.5, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.2–5.2 and OR 2.1, 95% CI 1.0–4.3] respectively) and 89 uninfected patients (OR 2.5, 95% CI 1.2–5.4 and OR 4.2, 95% CI 1.5–11.6] respectively). Increased hospitalization associated with MDR Acinetobacter infection emphasizes the need for infection control strategies to prevent cross-transmission in healthcare settings

    Modeling methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in hospitals: Transmission dynamics, antibiotic usage and its history

    BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is endemic in many hospital settings, posing substantial threats and economic burdens worldwide. METHODS: We propose mathematical models to investigate the transmission dynamics of MRSA and determine factors that influence the prevalence of MRSA infection when antibiotics are given to patients to treat or prevent infections with either MRSA itself or other bacterial pathogens. RESULTS: Our results suggest that: (i) MRSA always persists in the hospital when colonized and infected patients are admitted; (ii) the longer the duration of treatment of infected patients and the lower the probability of successful treatment will increase the prevalence of MRSA infection; (iii) the longer the duration of contamination of health care workers (HCWs) and the more their contacts with patients may increase the prevalence of MRSA infection; (iv) possible ways to control the prevalence of MRSA infection include treating patients with antibiotic history as quickly and efficiently as possible, screening and isolating colonized and infected patients at admission, and compliance with strict hand-washing rules by HCWs. CONCLUSION: Our modeling studies offer an approach to investigating MRSA infection in hospital settings and the impact of antibiotic history on the incidence of infection. Our findings suggest important influences on the prevalence of MRSA infection which may be useful in designing control policies
