    Wide-angle elastic scattering and color randomization

    Baryon-baryon elastic scattering is considered in the independent scattering (Landshoff) mechanism. It is suggested that for scattering at moderate energies, direct and interchange quark channels contribute with equal color coefficients because the quark color is randomized by soft gluon exchange during the hadronization stage. With this assumption, it is shown that the ratio of cross sections Rpp/ppR_{\overline{p} p/ p p} at CM angle θ=900\theta = 90^0 decreases from a high energy value of R_{\pbar p / pp} \approx 1/2.7, down to R_{\pbar p / pp} \approx 1/28, compatible with experimental data at moderate energies. This sizable fall in the ratio seems to be characteristic of the Landshoff mechanism, in which changes at the quark level have a strong effect precisely because the hadronic process occurs via multiple quark scatterings.     The broad use of the Pm8 resistance gene in wheat resulted in hypermutation of the AvrPm8 gene in the powdery mildew pathogen

    Background: Worldwide wheat production is under constant threat by fast-evolving fungal pathogens. In the last decades, wheat breeding for disease resistance heavily relied on the introgression of chromosomal segments from related species as genetic sources of new resistance. The Pm8 resistance gene against the powdery mildew disease has been introgressed from rye into wheat as part of a large 1BL.1RS chromosomal translocation encompassing multiple disease resistance genes and yield components. Due to its high agronomic value, this translocation has seen continuous global use since the 1960s on large growth areas, even after Pm8 resistance was overcome by the powdery mildew pathogen. The long-term use of Pm8 at a global scale provided the unique opportunity to study the consequences of such extensive resistance gene application on pathogen evolution. Results: Using genome-wide association studies in a population of wheat mildew isolates, we identified the avirulence effector AvrPm8 specifically recognized by Pm8. Haplovariant mining in a global mildew population covering all major wheat growing areas of the world revealed 17 virulent haplotypes of the AvrPm8 gene that grouped into two functional categories. The first one comprised amino acid polymorphisms at a single position along the AvrPm8 protein, which we confirmed to be crucial for the recognition by Pm8. The second category consisted of numerous destructive mutations to the AvrPm8 open reading frame such as disruptions of the start codon, gene truncations, gene deletions, and interference with mRNA splicing. With the exception of a single, likely ancient, gain-of-virulence mutation found in mildew isolates around the world, all AvrPm8 virulence haplotypes were found in geographically restricted regions, indicating that they occurred recently as a consequence of the frequent Pm8 use. Conclusions: In this study, we show that the broad and prolonged use of the Pm8 gene in wheat production worldwide resulted in a multitude of gain-of-virulence mechanisms affecting the AvrPm8 gene in the wheat powdery mildew pathogen. Based on our findings, we conclude that both standing genetic variation as well as locally occurring new mutations contributed to the global breakdown of the Pm8 resistance gene introgression

    An operator expansion for the elastic limit

    A leading twist expansion in terms of bi-local operators is proposed for the structure functions of deeply inelastic scattering near the elastic limit x1x \to 1, which is also applicable to a range of other processes. Operators of increasing dimensions contribute to logarithmically enhanced terms which are supressed by corresponding powers of 1x1-x.     Stress acts cumulatively to precipitate Alzheimer’s disease-like tau pathology and cognitive deficits

    Stressful life experiences are likely tiological factors in sporadic forms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Many AD patients hypersecrete glucocorticoids (GCs), and their GC levels correlate with the rate of cognitive impairment and extent of neuronal atrophy. Severity of cognitive deficits in AD correlates strongly with levels of perphosphorylated forms of the cytoskeletal protein TAU, an essential mediator of the actions of amyloid Beta (ABeta ), another molecule with a key pathogenic role in AD. Our objective was to investigate the sequential interrelationships between these various pathogenic elements, in particular with respect to the mechanisms through which stress might precipitate cognitive decline. We thus examined whether stress, through the mediation of GCs, influences TAU hyperphosphorylation, a critical and early event in the cascade of processes leading to AD pathology. Results from healthy, wild-type, middle-aged rats show that chronic stress and GC induce abnormal hyperphosphorylation of TAU in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFC), with contemporaneous impairments of hippocampus- and PFC-dependent behaviors. Exogenous GC potentiated the ability of centrally infused ABeta to induce hyperphosphorylation of TAU epitopes associated with AD and cytoplasmic accumulation of TAU, while previous exposure to stress aggravated the biochemical and behavioral effects of GC in ABeta-infused animals.     The KLN Theorem and Soft Radiation in Gauge Theories: Abelian Case

    We present a covariant formulation of the Kinoshita, Lee, Nauenberg (KLN) theorem for processes involving the radiation of soft particles. The role of the disconnected diagrams is explored and a rearrangement of the perturbation theory is performed such that the purely disconnected diagrams are factored out. The remaining effect of the disconnected diagrams results in a simple modification of the usual Feynman rules for the S-matrix elements. As an application, we show that when combined with the Low theorem, this leads to a proof of the absense of the 1/Q1/Q corrections to inclusive processes (like the Drell-Yan process).     Στην παρούσα εργασία μελετάται πειραματικά η ροή σε σήραγγα υπό συνθήκες ελεύθερης επιφάνειας και έντονης κλίσης πυθμένα 1:10. Διερευνάται η δυνατότητα μείωσης της ταχύτητας ροής μέσω συνδυασμού κατακόρυφων, πλευρικών στοιχείων τραχύτητας και λεκανών καταστροφής ενέργειας με οδοντώσεις. Η μελετώμενη διάταξη στηρίζεται στην ύπαρξη επαναλαμβανομένων τμημάτων (modules) εντός των οποίων επιτυγχάνεται επαναληψιμότητα της ροής. Η αποτελεσματικότητα του σχεδιασμού διερευνήθηκε σε υδραυλικό ομοίωμα κλίμακας 1:12,5 που βασίσθηκε σε συνθήκες δυναμικής ομοιότητας κατά Froude για χαρακτηριστικές τιμές παροχής. Η επεξεργασία των μετρήσεων έδειξε ότι με κατάλληλη διάταξη πλευρικών στοιχείων τραχύτητας και διαμόρφωση της λεκάνης καταστροφής ενέργειας ελέγχεται η τιμή της ταχύτητας, ικανοποιείται η απαίτηση μεγίστου βάθους ροής σε σχέση με τις διαστάσεις της σήραγγας και επιτυγχάνεται επαναληψιμότητα της ροής σε κάθε module.The free-surface flow in a tunnel of steep bed slope 1:10 is studied experimentally. The effectiveness of vertical roughness elements on the side walls and energy dissipation basins with blocks is investigated, with the aim to reduce flow velocity in the tunnel. The design is based on the concept of repeated modules in order to achieve flow repeatability. The scale of the physical model was 1:12.5 under Froude similarity conditions. The analysis of measurements indicates that a suitable arrangement of vertical roughness elements on the side walls and a suitable design of the energy dissipation basin can control the flow velocity magnitude, satisfy the maximum flow depth requirement with respect to the tunnel dimensions, and achieve flow repeatability in each modul

    Measuring Parton Densities in the Pomeron

    We present a program to measure the parton densities in the pomeron using diffractive deep inelastic scattering and diffractive photoproduction, and to test the resulting parton densities by applying them to other processes such as the diffractive production of jets in hadron-hadron collisions. Since QCD factorization has been predicted NOT to apply to hard diffractive scattering, this program of fitting and using parton densities might be expected to fail.
