    Polarization-controlled single photons

    Get PDF
Vacuum-stimulated Raman transitions are driven between two magnetic substates of a rubidium-87 atom strongly coupled to an optical cavity. A magnetic field lifts the degeneracy of these states, and the atom is alternately exposed to laser pulses of two different frequencies. This produces a stream of single photons with alternating circular polarization in a predetermined spatio-temporal mode. MHz repetition rates are possible as no recycling of the atom between photon generations is required. Photon indistinguishability is tested by time-resolved two-photon interference.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Contact and sum-rules in a near-uniform Fermi gas at unitarity

We present an experimental study of the high-energy excitation spectra of unitary Fermi gases. Using focussed beam Bragg spectroscopy, we locally probe atoms in the central region of a harmonically trapped cloud where the density is nearly uniform, enabling measurements of the dynamic structure factor for a range of temperatures both below and above the superfluid transition. Applying sum-rules to the measured Bragg spectra, we resolve the characteristic behaviour of the universal contact parameter, C{\cal C}, across the superfluid transition. We also employ a recent theoretical result for the kinetic (second-moment) sum-rule to obtain the internal energy of gases at unitarity.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Self-Consistent Data Analysis of the Proton Structure Function g1 and Extraction of its Moments

The reanalysis of all available world data on the longitudinal asymmetry A|| is presented. The proton structure function g1 was extracted within a unique framework of data inputs and assumptions. These data allowed for a reliable evaluation of moments of the structure function g1 in the Q2 range from 0.2 up to 30 GeV2. The Q2 evolution of the moments was studied in QCD by means of Operator Product Expansion (OPE).Comment: Proceeding of 3rd International Symposium on the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule and its extensions, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia June 2-5, 200

11 W narrow linewidth laser source at 780nm for laser cooling and manipulation of Rubidium

We present a narrow linewidth continuous laser source with over 11 Watts of output power at 780nm, based on single-pass frequency doubling of an amplified 1560nm fibre laser with 36% efficiency. This source offers a combination of high power, simplicity, mode quality and stability. Without any active stabilization, the linewidth is measured to be below 10kHz. The fibre seed is tunable over 60GHz, which allows access to the D2 transitions in 87Rb and 85Rb, providing a viable high-power source for laser cooling as well as for large-momentum-transfer beamsplitters in atom interferometry. Sources of this type will pave the way for a new generation of high flux, high duty-cycle degenerate quantum gas experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

High-Precision c and b Masses, and QCD Coupling from Current-Current Correlators in Lattice and Continuum QCD

We extend our earlier lattice-QCD analysis of heavy-quark correlators to smaller lattice spacings and larger masses to obtain new values for the c mass and QCD coupling, and, for the first time, values for the b mass: m_c(3GeV,n_f=4)=0.986(6)GeV, alpha_msb(M_Z,n_f=5)=0.1183(7), and m_b(10GeV,n_f=5)=3.617(25)GeV. These are among the most accurate determinations by any method. We check our results using a nonperturbative determination of the mass ratio m_b(mu,n_f)/m_c(mu,n_f); the two methods agree to within our 1% errors and taken together imply m_b/m_c=4.51(4). We also update our previous analysis of alpha_msb from Wilson loops to account for revised values for r_1 and r_1/a, finding a new value alpha_\msb(M_Z,n_f=5)=0.1184(6); and we update our recent values for light-quark masses from the ratio m_c/m_s. Finally, in the Appendix, we derive a procedure for simplifying and accelerating complicated least-squares fits.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 3 table

Stochastic Analysis of a Churn-Tolerant Structured Peer-to-Peer Scheme

We present and analyze a simple and general scheme to build a churn (fault)-tolerant structured Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network. Our scheme shows how to "convert" a static network into a dynamic distributed hash table(DHT)-based P2P network such that all the good properties of the static network are guaranteed with high probability (w.h.p). Applying our scheme to a cube-connected cycles network, for example, yields a O(logN)O(\log N) degree connected network, in which every search succeeds in O(logN)O(\log N) hops w.h.p., using O(logN)O(\log N) messages, where NN is the expected stable network size. Our scheme has an constant storage overhead (the number of nodes responsible for servicing a data item) and an O(logN)O(\log N) overhead (messages and time) per insertion and essentially no overhead for deletions. All these bounds are essentially optimal. While DHT schemes with similar guarantees are already known in the literature, this work is new in the following aspects: (1) It presents a rigorous mathematical analysis of the scheme under a general stochastic model of churn and shows the above guarantees; (2) The theoretical analysis is complemented by a simulation-based analysis that validates the asymptotic bounds even in moderately sized networks and also studies performance under changing stable network size; (3) The presented scheme seems especially suitable for maintaining dynamic structures under churn efficiently. In particular, we show that a spanning tree of low diameter can be efficiently maintained in constant time and logarithmic number of messages per insertion or deletion w.h.p.
