    Breached pairing in trapped three-color atomic Fermi gases

    We introduce an exactly solvable model for trapped three-color atom gases. Applications to a cigar-shaped trapped cold fermions reveal a complex structure of breached pairing phases. We find two competing superfluid phases at weak and intermediate couplings, each one with two color pair condensates, that can be distinguished from density profile measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Griffiths phases in the strongly disordered Kondo necklace model

    The effect of strong disorder on the one-dimensional Kondo necklace model is studied using a perturbative real-space renormalization group approach which becomes asymptotically exact in the low energy limit. The phase diagram of the model presents a random quantum critical point separating two phases; the {\em random singlet phase} of a quantum disordered XY chain and the random Kondo phase. We also consider an anisotropic version of the model and show that it maps on the strongly disordered transverse Ising model. The present results provide a rigorous microscopic basis for non-Fermi liquid behavior in disordered heavy fermions due to Griffiths phases.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    A simple and cost-effective method for cable root detection and extension measurement in estuary wetland forests

    This work presents the development of a low-cost method to measure the length cable roots of black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) trees to define the boundaries of central part of the anchoring root system (CPRS) without the need to fully expose root systems. The method was tested to locate and measure the length shallow woody root systems. An ultrasonic Doppler fetal monitor (UD) and a stock of steel rods (SR) were used to probe root locations without removing sediments from the surface, measure their length and estimate root-soil plate dimensions. The method was validated by comparing measurements with root lengths taken through direct measurement of excavated cable roots and from root-soil plate radii (exposed root-soil material when a tree tips over) of five up-rooted trees with stem diameters (D130) ranging between 10 and 50 cm. The mean CPRS radius estimated with the use of the Doppler was directly correlated with tree stem diameter and was not significantly different from the root-soil plate mean radius measured from up-rooted trees or from CPRS approximated by digging trenches. Our method proved to be effective and reliable in following cable roots for large amounts of trees of both black and white mangrove trees. In a period of 40 days of work, three people were capable of measuring 648 roots belonging to 81 trees, out of which 37% were found grafted to other tree roots. This simple method can be helpful in following shallow root systems with minimal impact and help map root connection networks of grafted trees

    Teachers’ Agreement and Manifestation of Educational Philosophies

    This study sets forth the philosophical frameworks of teachers in the teaching-learning process. The descriptive-correlational research design was utilized in determining the teachers’ extent of agreement and extent of manifestation of educational philosophies. It is revealed in this study that the respondents have very strong agreement and manifestation of the philosophy of idealism; with no significant difference in their agreement and manifestation of the idealism and existentialism, while with significant difference in realism and pragmatism as regards sex, while no significant difference in all the four philosophies with reference to age, civil status, and along seminar, trainings, and workshops. On the other hand, there is a significant relationship between the teacher’s extent of agreement and extent of their pedagogical manifestation in all the four philosophies of education along teacher’s role, teaching strategies, classroom management, and curriculu

    Pathogenic fungus in feral populations of the invasive North American bullfrog in Argentina

    Nearly a third (32.4%) of the world?s amphibian species are either threatened with extinction or already extinct (1). The chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) (Chytridiomycetes: Ryzophydiales) (2) has been recognized as responsible for mass mortalities or population extinctions of numerous anuran species in different continents (e.g., 3,4,5 and citations therein). There is evidence that legal and illegal trade in amphibians as pets, food and for bio-control is one of the reasons for the spread of Bd (6,7,8,9).The North American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus (Shaw, 1802) (Anura: Ranidae), has been introduced accidentally or intentionally for aquaculture into numerous countries (10). L. catesbeianus is a highly invasive species that disperses rapidly within an ecosystem (11). The oldest report of specimens of L. catesbeianus parasitized by Bd dates from 1928, and corresponds to individuals from the State of California, USA (12). Bullfrogs can be asymptomatically infected with Bd (13), and infected specimens can readily spread the disease into new geographic regions (14).Initial unsuccessful attempts to introduce bullfrogs into Argentina for farming date from 1935. A subsequent successful introduction occurred during the 1980s (10,15). Escaped individuals became established and the species spread rapidly (16).     Final excitation energy of fission fragments

    We study how the excitation energy of the fully accelerated fission fragments is built up. It is stressed that only the intrinsic excitation energy available before scission can be exchanged between the fission fragments to achieve thermal equilibrium. This is in contradiction with most models used to calculate prompt neutron emission where it is assumed that the total excitation energy of the final fragments is shared between the fragments by the condition of equal temperatures. We also study the intrinsic excitation-energy partition according to a level density description with a transition from a constant-temperature regime to a Fermi-gas regime. Complete or partial excitation-energy sorting is found at energies well above the transition energy.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    XMM-Newton observations of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 and its central source

    We present new results from the observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7–3946 (also G347.3–0.5) performed in five distinct pointings with the EPIC instrument on board the satellite XMM-Newton. RX J1713.7–3946 is a shelltype SNR dominated by synchrotron radiation in the X-rays. Its emission (emission measure and photon index) as well as the absorption along the line-of-sight has been characterized over the entire SNR. The X-ray mapping of the absorbing column density has revealed strong well-constrained variations (0.4 × 1022 cm−2 ≤ NH ≤ 1.1 × 1022 cm−2) and, particularly, a strong absorption in the southwest. Moreover, there are several clues indicating that the shock front of RX J1713.7–3946 is impacting the clouds responsible for the absorption as revealed for instance by the positive correlation between X-ray absorption and X-ray brightness along the western rims. The CO and H observations show that the inferred cumulative absorbing column densities are in excellent agreement with the X-ray findings in different parts of the remnant on condition that the SNR lies at a distance of 1.3 ± 0.4 kpc, probably in the Sagittarius galactic arm, instead of the commonly-accepted value of 6 kpc. An excess in the CO emission is found in the southwest suggesting that the absorption is due to molecular clouds. A search for OH masers in the southwestern region has been unsuccessful, possibly due to the low density of the clouds. The X-ray mapping of the photon index has also revealed strong variations (1.8 ≤ Γ ≤ 2.6). The spectrum is steep in the faint central regions and flat at the presumed shock locations, particularly in the southeast. Nevertheless, the regions where the shock impacts molecular clouds have a steeper spectrum than those where the shock propagates into a low density medium. The search for the thermal emission in RX J1713.7–3946 has been unsuccessful leading to a number density upper limit of 2 × 10−2 cm−3 in the ambient medium. This low density corresponds to a reasonable kinetic energy of the explosion provided that the remnant is less than a few thousand years old. A scenario based on a modified ambient medium due to the effect of a progenitor stellar wind is proposed and leads to an estimate of RX J1713.7–3946’s progenitor mass between 12 and 16 M. The X-ray bright central point source 1WGA J1713.4–3949 detected at the center of SNR RX J1713.7–3946 shows spectral properties very similar to those of the Compact Central Objects found in SNRs and consistent in terms of absorption with that of the central diffuse X-ray emission arising from the SNR.
