    Experimental study of fire containment using water mist curtains in a reduced-scale deck of a ro-ro ship

    Experiments have been conducted to evaluate the containment of smoke and heat using water mist curtains in a model setup of a ro-ro ship's cargo deck with a scale of 1:13, providing practical insights into the application of such fire protection systems in the cargo deck as well as valuable data for future numerical simulations. In this regard, the requirements of the international convention of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) are studied for the side openings of so-called ‘open decks’ in comparison with ‘closed decks’, especially to examine the feasibility of using water mist curtains for creating isolated subdivisions in the ro-ro space as a fire management strategy. The water mist curtains are created with one or two rows of water mist nozzles at pressures ranging from 3 to 8 bar, while the source of smoke and heat is a liquid pool fire, and inert cargo items are used in some experiments. Correspondingly, the interaction between the water mist curtain(s) and the fire is evaluated in terms of its heat release rate, and the containment effect is quantified via measurements of smoke flow through the deck and through the windows, concentrations of gaseous species, as well as gas temperatures at various key locations. The study shows that water mist curtains have a strong effect on fire dynamics and smoke propagation, but containment is dependent on the configuration of side openings and the location of fire, among other important factors

    Electron localization in sound absorption oscillations in the quantum Hall effect regime

    The absorption coefficient for surface acoustic waves in a piezoelectric insulator in contact with a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure (with two-dimensional electron mobility μ=1.3×105cm2/V⋅s)\mu= 1.3\times 10^5 cm^2/V\cdot s) at T=4.2K) via a small gap has been investigated experimentally as a function of the frequency of the wave, the width of the vacuum gap, the magnetic field, and the temperature. The magnetic field and frequency dependencies of the high-frequency conductivity (in the region 30-210 MHz) are calculated and analyzed. The experimental results can be explained if it assumed that there exists a fluctuation potential in which current carrier localization occurs. The absorption of the surface acoustic waves in an interaction with two-dimensional electrons localized in the energy "tails" of Landau levels is discussed.Comment: RevTeX 6 pages+6 EPS pic

    Assessing clinical communication skills in physicians: are the skills context specific or generalizable

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Communication skills are essential for physicians to practice Medicine. Evidence for the validity and domain specificity of communication skills in physicians is equivocal and requires further research. This research was conducted to adduce evidence for content and context specificity of communication skills and to assess the usefulness of a generic instrument for assessing communication skills in International Medical Graduates (IMGs).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A psychometric design was used for identifying the reliability and validity of the communication skills instruments used for high-stakes exams for IMG's. Data were collected from 39 IMGs (19 men – 48.7%; 20 women – 51.3%; Mean age = 41 years) assessed at 14 station OSCE and subsequently in supervised clinical practice with several instruments (patient surveys; ITERs; Mini-CEX).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All the instruments had adequate reliability (Cronbach's alpha: .54 – .96). There were significant correlations (r range: 0.37 – 0.70, <it>p </it>< .05) of communication skills assessed by examiner with standardized patients, and of mini-CEX with patient surveys, and ITERs. The intra-item reliability across all cases for the 13 items was low (Cronbach's alpha: .20 – .56). The correlations of communication skills within method (e.g., OSCE or clinical practice) were significant but were non-significant between methods (e.g., OSCE and clinical practice).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results provide evidence of context specificity of communication skills, as well as convergent and criterion-related validity of communication skills. Both in OSCEs and clinical practice, communication checklists need to be case specific, designed for content validity.</p

    Observation and assessment of model retrievals of surface exchange components over a row canopy using directional thermal data

    Land surface temperature is an essential climate variable that can serve as a proxy for detecting water deficiencies in croplands and wooded areas. Its measurement can however be influenced by anisotropic properties of surface targets leading to occurrence of directional effects on the signal. This may lead to an incorrect interpretation of thermal measurements. In this study, we perform model assessments and check the influence of thermal radiation directionality using data over a vineyard. To derive the overall directional surface temperatures, elemental values measured by individual cameras were aggregated according to the respective cover fractions/weights in viewing direction. Aggregated temperatures from the turbid model were compared to corresponding temperatures simulated by the 3D DART radiative transfer model. The reconstructed temperatures were then used in surface-energy-balance (SEB) simulations to assess the impact of the Sun-target-sensor geometry on retrievals. Here, the pseudo-isotropic Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Remote-Sensing-of-Evapotranspiration (SPARSE) dual-source model together with the non-isotropic version (SPARSE4), were used. Both schemes were able to retrieve overall fluxes satisfactorily, confirming a previous study. However, the sensitivity (of flux and component temperature estimates) of the schemes to viewing direction was tested for the first time using reconstructed sets of directional thermal data to force the models. Degradation (relative to nadir) in flux retrieval cross-row was observed, with better consistency along rows. Overall, it was nevertheless shown that SPARSE4 is less influenced by the viewing direction of the temperature than SPARSE, particularly for strongly off-nadir viewing. Some directional/asymmetrical artefacts are however not well reproduced by the simple Radiative Transfer Methods (RTM), which can then manifest in and influence the subsequent thermal-infrared-driven SEB modelling.This work was supported by the ALTOS project (PRIMA 2018 - Section 2), with grants provided by ANR via the agreement n°ANR-18-PRIM-0011-02 as well as the CNES/TOSCA program for the TRISHNA project.     Magnetism, Spin-Orbit Coupling, and Superconducting Pairing in UGe2_2

    A consistent picture on the mean-field level of the magnetic properties and electronic structure of the superconducting itinerant ferromagnet UGe2_2 is shown to require inclusion of correlation effects beyond the local density approximation (LDA). The "LDA+U" approach reproduces both the magnitude of the observed moment, composed of strongly opposing spin and orbital parts, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The largest Fermi surface sheet is comprised primarily of spin majority states with orbital projection mâ„“m_{\ell}=0, suggesting a much simpler picture of the pairing than is possible for general strong spin-orbit coupled materials. This occurrence, and the quasi-two-dimensional geometry of the Fermi surface, support the likelihood of magnetically mediated p-wave triplet pairing.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
