Beautiful, Sexy, and Happy Celebrities: Perfect Mothers or Instamoms
The development of information technologies and the Internet has created an enormous economy. In line with this digital transformation, cultural change has come about. Global companies create new trends focused on vanity and pleasure in social media that follow the patriarchal capitalist ideology. Motherhood has also been included in this process, and “perfect motherhood,” as an extension to new generation motherhood, has been popularized on social media. Perfect motherhood requires mothers who are responsible for looking after children and the home to also be successful in their professional and personal lives while looking beautiful, young, chic, sexy, and fit. Recently the celebrification of motherhood, which can be seen on Instagram, became another quality added to the requirements of being a perfect mother. Heightened during the new post-COVID times, the “Instamom” phenomenon conceals the fact that women are driven to more states of increased precarity and vulnerability, alongside unemployment, exploitation, and ecological and economic crises. This study analyzes the perfect motherhood myth through Instamom case studies and attempts to show how Instamoms are perceived by mothers and mothers-to-be. By adopting the digital ethnography method, 30 Instamom accounts (with followers ranging from 135,000 to 3.5 million) in Turkey were observed for a year via passive participant observations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six Instamoms and 12 follower mothers and mothers-to-be. In conclusion, it was discovered that Instamoms were perceived by their followers as exemplars of knowledge and beauty. Furthermore, the study revealed that both groups were part of the celebrification and branding process, and those who shared knowledge based on experience were considered sincere and created a bigger impression on their followers. It was also discovered that when sharing on social media, these Instamoms attempted to look their best. Moreover, Instamom accounts that prominently use children to increase viewer interaction demonstrate issues related to the “commercialization of childhood.” Tangible advice for transformative change is included at the end of the research
Evaluating the relationships among the sociodemographic variables and gender perceptions of undergraduate students in Turkey: A meta-analysis study
This study seeks to examine gender perceptions in Turkey. After completing a literature review, the
research compiles and analyzes academic studies on Turkish undergraduate students and their gender perceptions.
Of the 763 studies included in the literature review, 15 were included in the meta-analysis. The study uses
Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) Software (Biostat Inc, 2021) for the analysis and has concluded four different
sociodemographic variables to be suitable for the meta-analysis. The variables used are undergraduates’ (1) gender,
(2) school year, (3) mother’s education, and (4) father’s education. The paper presents the findings for each variable
separately. The results show gender assigned at birth to have the biggest effect on undergraduate students’ gender
perceptions, mother’s education to have a small effect, and father’s education to have no effect. The most striking
and notable result from the meta-analysis is the lack of difference between the gender perceptions of freshman
and senior undergraduate students.
desteklenmesi beklenmektedir. This study aims at making an assessment of the social work discipline and
profession on the basis of the futurism movement, which emerged as an artistic
movement and gained social and technological dimensions. Therefore,
predictions for a possible agenda of the future social work discipline and
profession are discussed. In this study, the relationship between futurism and
social work is established in an effort to reveal how social work practices, based
on universal values such as human rights, social justice, equality, social
prosperity and the dignity of the individual, are moving forward. In this context,
the future of social work is discussed under the following three topics: (1)
transhumanism, (2) gamification of human life, (3) homo roboticus and care. In
fact, all these topics have been on the agenda of social sciences for the last few
years. Despite this interest, to the best of the researcher’s knowledge, this article
is one of the first studies on these issues in the field of social work and has raised
many questions in need of further studies

Becoming-Virgin: Re-Virginisation Practices in Turkey
Re-virginisation refers to the regaining of women’s ‘technical’ virginity even though the woman might have had penile-vaginal intercourse before. While virginity takes on many different meanings that are culturally determined and socially constructed, ‘technical’ virginity refers to ‘proving’ virginity through blood and the sense of tightness of the vagina. Even though studies have shown that neither of these two can be markers of virginity, social change around this myth has not followed the research in the field. Hence, to be ‘marriageable’ again, women might either be operated on to have a so-called new hymen via hymenoplasty (sometimes accompanied by vaginal tightening surgery) or buy a product called artificial hymen (accompanied by vaginal tightening cream).
Based on 55 in-depth interviews with healthcare staff, artificial hymen retailers, re-virginisers, and women and men who are not directly related to re-virginisation; as well as discourse analysis of online conversations on re-virginisation between women in Turkey and websites advertising relevant goods and services, I argue that re-virginisation is not a moment, but a process. It is not possible to pinpoint a time when a woman feels like a virgin following the operation or the use of the artificial hymen. Instead, women go through a lengthy process involving a variety of physical and emotional changes that might take years, or might never end.
This thesis draws a legal and economic framework within which re-virginisation operates in Turkey, as well as arguing that the nation-state actively ignores these practices in line with its neo-conservative policies. Furthermore, it utilises the notion of “becoming” as originated by Gilles Deleuze and developed with Felix Guattari, and its feminist interpretations to discuss how women’s relationship to their body changes, how they perform their emotional and embodied pain, as well as how their perception of time and space changes affectively throughout.Cambridge Trust; Orient Institut Istanbul; Cambridge Political Economy Society; Department of Sociology, University of Cambridg
