Objective: There are limited data on bone dimension and cartilage thickness of the distal humeral articular surface. This study aimed to evaluate sex- and age-related bone dimension and cartilage thickness differences and assess the effect of cartilage thickness on distal humeral shape. Design: Elbow magnetic resonance images of 180 healthy participants were evaluated. Cartilage thicknesses of the trochlea and capitellum were measured at 19 points using coronal and axial images. In addition, bone diameters were measured from the flexion-extension axis to the 19 points on the coronal and axial magnetic resonance images. Sex differences were evaluated, and the correlation between age and measurement parameters was assessed. Results: Significant sex differences regarding the diameters of the axial trochlear bone, coronal lateral trochlear bone, and medial capitellar bone, cartilage thickness at the apex of the lateral trochlear ridge in the axial and coronal plane and at the most lateral point of the capitellar articular surface in the axial plane were observed. A negative correlation was observed between age and axial plane trochlear bone dimensions and between age and coronal plane lateral trochlear and medial capitellar bone dimensions. No significant correlation was found between cartilage thickness and bone dimensions. Conclusions: Bone dimension and cartilage thickness at the distal humerus vary according to sex and age. The data could be used in the donor site selection and graft preparation while osteochondral autograft transfer and allograft transplantation, and in the development of gender-compatible hemiarthroplasty implants. © The Author(s) 2020

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and the risk factors of allergic rhinitis in a particular area. Methods: The main study group consisted of all school children in Kemalpasa district aged 13-14 years. Children with current rhinitis based on responses given in ISAAC questionnaire survey were further evaluated for confirmation. Parents responded to a more detailed questionnaire about allergic diseases and risk factors. Then peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) was evaluated to objectively assess nasal patency. Skin-prick test was performed for ten common allergens. Results: The questionnaire was answered by 90.8% (1373) of children. The prevalence of physician-diagnosed AR was 11.1%. Current rhinitis was found to be 31.3%. Of this group, 55.0% were admitted for the parent questionnaire and tests. Precisely, 90.3% of children accepted PNIF evaluation, and %10.1 of them had a nasal obstruction. Skin-prick tests revealed allergy for at least 1 allergen in 16.6% of children. The present study showed that the children with maternal allergic rhinitis history had 2,18 fold, and the children with seasonal allergic rhinitis had 2,11 fold higher possibility of sensitization to an allergen. The probability of perennial allergic rhinitis was 3,1 fold higher in the children who had siblings with allergic rhinitis. Conclusion: We included all children in a specific age group living in an area in our survey. As well as we found the prevalence of current rhinitis with the ISAAC questionnaire; we also evaluated peak nasal inspiratory flow and used skin-prick tests that yielded objective results

Introduction:The Coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic has been caused several physical, mental and psychosocial problems alongside being a respiratory system infection. During pandemic, children were forced to stay at home as a preventative measure. Thus, we aimed to assess the number and characteristics of home accident-related visits in a pediatric emergency department during the pandemic. Methods:This cross-sectional study included all children aged under 18 years who admitted with home accident in two curfew periods and the corresponding periods of previous year. Demographic and clinical data was consisted of age, gender, admission time, time elapsed between accident and pediatric emergency department admission, type of home accident, medical and surgical interventions, length of stay in pediatric emergency department, hospitalization, or intensive care unit admission and mortality. The data of curfew periods was compared with its control periods by using Mann- Whitney U test, t-test or chi-square. The statistical significance was defined as p≤0.05.Results:We enrolled 744 patients. There was no significant difference in age, gender, time elapsed from the accident, ratio of hospitalization between curfew and control periods. The proportions of home accidents among all admissions were higher in two curfew periods (p=0.001 and p<0.001). The ratio of poisoning and foreign body ingestions was increased during both two curfew periods (0.7% vs. 0.3%, p=0.001 and 0.7% vs. 0.1%, p<0.001 for poisoning; 0.4% vs. 0.1%, p<0.001 and 0.8% vs. 0.1%, p<0.001 for foreign body ingestion) and the ratio of trauma was increased in the curfew-2 period (1.2% vs. 0.3%, p<0.001).Conclusion:We suggested a higher ratio of home accidents especially poisoning and foreign body ingestions in curfew period. Thus, in case of global disasters such as pandemic the authorities should improve preventative and healthcare strategies to establish a safe environment for children and adolescents

Multiagent cooperation for solving global optimization problems: an extendible framework with example cooperation strategies

This paper proposes the use of multiagent cooperation for solving global optimization problems through the introduction of a new multiagent environment, MANGO. The strength of the environment lays in itsflexible structure based on communicating software agents that attempt to solve a problem cooperatively. This structure allows the execution of a wide range of global optimization algorithms described as a set of interacting operations. At one extreme, MANGO welcomes an individual non-cooperating agent, which is basically the traditional way of solving a global optimization problem. At the other extreme, autonomous agents existing in the environment cooperate as they see fit during run time. We explain the development and communication tools provided in the environment as well as examples of agent realizations and cooperation scenarios. We also show how the multiagent structure is more effective than having a single nonlinear optimization algorithm with randomly selected initial points

The objective of our study was to evaluate the antibody responses of health care workers (HCWs) who were vaccinated with booster dose BNT162b2 6 months after 2 doses of the CoronoVac vaccine. The study included 318 HCWs vaccinated with inactive CoronaVac SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in 2 doses. Anti-spike/RBD IgG levels were measured immediately before and 1 month after the booster dose. In the sixth month after CoronaVac vaccination, the median of antibody levels of 1212.02 AU/ML, while it was 9283 AU/mL after BNT162b2 vaccination. IgG antibody titers of over 1050 AU/mL (which is equivalent to 1:80 dilution in the plaque reduction neutralization test) were detected in HCWs 15.09% and 97.8%, respectively. Our results showed that antibody titers increased 8-fold after the booster dose. We believe that the administration of the mRNA vaccine as a booster dose can provide more effective protection against COVID-19 infection, especially in individuals with risk factors.IU-Cerrahpaşa Scientific Research Projects Uni

Aims Despite high vaccination rates, increasing case numbers continue to be reported with the identification of new variants of concern, and the issue of durability of the vaccine-induced immune response remains hot topic. Real-life data regarding time-dependent immunogenicity of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines are scarce. We aimed to investigate the changes in the antibody at the different times after the second dose of the CoronaVac vaccine. Methods The study included 175 HCWs vaccinated with inactive CoronaVac (Sinovac Life Sciences, China) SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in two doses. Anti-spike/RBD IgG levels were measured first, third, and sixth months after the second dose. Chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (IgG II Quant test, Abbott, USA), which is 100% compatible with plaque reduction neutralization test, was used. Results Mean age of the participants was 38 +/- 11.23 years (range between 22 and 66) of whom 119 (63.9%) were female, and 56 (32%) were male. Dramatic reductions were demonstrated in median antibody levels particularly in the infection-naive group, comprising 138 HCWs compared to those with prior history of COVID-19 infection (n = 37) (p < 0.001). There was no difference between the two groups in terms of age, gender, blood groups, BMI, and comorbid diseases. Conclusions While antibody positivity remained above 90% in the 6th month after two doses of inactivated vaccine in HCWs, the median titers of neutralizing antibodies decreased rapidly. The decrease was more rapid and significant in those with no history of prior COVID-19 infection. In this critical phase of the pandemic, where we are facing the dominance of the Omicron variant after Delta, booster doses have become vital.IU-Cerrahpasa Scientific Research Projects Uni

Objective:Follicular type thyroid carcinoma (FTC) rarely presented with spinal metastasis. We aimed to report such a case and to review the literature.Method:A 45 year old male with L2 metastasis of FTC was reported, and other 26 cases were found in literature. Characteristics of the patients and tumors were evaluated. Results:Total 27 patients were 55.2±15 years of age, and male/female ratio was 12/15. Nineteen patients had paresis of extremities, 9 of them could not mobilize on admission. Total resection of the spinal tumor had been performed in 14 cases and subtotal resection in 5. Radioactive iodine treatment had been added in 20 cases with or without other adjuvant treatment. Twenty-three patients had been followed for 43.7±53.2 months. Only four of them died 214, 66, 36 and 7 months after their presentations. Out of other 19 cases, 13 had been neurologically normal. Type of surgery (total resection versus others) the only factor affecting outcome. In the patients treated with total resection, outcome had been statistically better. Conclusion:Spinal metastasis as initial finding is very rare in the patients with FTC. However, prognosis is quite well with total tumor resection and adjuvant treatment. This cancer type must be kept in mind for differential diagnosis and must be screened in the patients with spinal tumors
