Comparison of stability statistics for yield in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

Analysis of multienvironment trials (METs) of crops for cultivar evaluation and recommendation is an important issue in plant breeding research. Evaluating both stability of performance and high yield is essential in MET analyses. The objectives of this study were to assess interrelationship among these measures and to identify high-yield and stable barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars in 11 environments during 2001 - 2003 in the central Black Sea region of Turkey. Significant differences were observed among barley cultivars for grain yield, thousand-grain weight, hectoliter weight, plant height and heading date. In this study, high values of TOP (proportion of environments in which a genotype ranked in the top third) was associated with high mean yield, but the other methods were not positively correlated with mean yield and instead characterized a static concept of stability. The results of principal component (PC) analysis and correlation analysis of parametric and nonparametric stability statistics and yield indicated that only TOP method would be useful for simultaneously selecting for high yield and stability. This method recommended Fahrettinbey and Sladoran as stable and Balkan 96 and Erginel as unstable genotypes. A biplot of the first two PCs also revealed that the stability statistic methods grouped as three distinct classes that corresponded to different dynamic (agronomic) and static (biological) concepts of stability

The combination of atmospheric plasma and chemical treatments for antibacterial finish on cotton

The aim of this study was to investigate the incorporation of triclosan based chemical into cyclodextrin based commercial product, bonded onto cotton fabric with and without plasma modification. The treated samples were characterized by SEM analysis. The antibacterial activities of the washed and unwashed samples were evaluated according to the AATCC Test Method 147-1998 and some physical properties were also investigated. It was observed that after the combination process of triclosan, cyclodextrin and atmospheric plasma modification, cotton fabric was able to retain its antibacterial activity up to the 5 washing cycles at 60°C

Measuring regional creative capacity: A literature review for rural-specific approaches

    Get PDF
Recent theories on regional creative capacity often focus on urban regions without taking into account rural regions. In addition, the application of such analyses to rural regions may lead to misrepresentation or misunderstanding of rural creative capacity. Against this background, the aim of the present study is to integrate the existing literature on different components of creative capacity, namely, knowledge, innovation, entrepreneurship and networks, in order to build a more comprehensive framework for rural creative capacity and its evaluation. In the light of the perspective from the empirical literature review on the evaluation of creative capacity in rural regions, various empirical measurements seem to misrepresent or underestimate the creative capacity of rural regions. Therefore, there is a clear need to use the locality in relation to its dynamics, i.e. tacit knowledge, cultural heritage and social and physical environment as the main and basic measurement unit for creative capacity analysis. 2010 Taylor & Francis

Evaluation of chrome-tanned leather solid wastes as lubricating filler agents

Collagen hydrolysates obtained from chromed leather solid wastes were modified with some fatty acids. These were examined in means of usability in fatliquoring process. The changes in leather characteristics, treated with condensates, were determined. According to findings, with lubricated collagen hydrolysates modified with myristic acid from saturated fatty acids and oleic acid from unsaturated acids leathers were showed better physical characteristics. Also, better results for lubrication of leathers were given by the condensates with the ratios of 1.0 hydrolysate:1.5 myristic acid and 1.0 hydrolysate:1.5 oleic acid
