    Systematic review of the nature of nursing care described by using the Caring Behaviours Inventory

    Aim To describe the nature of care received by patients measured through the Caring Behaviours Inventory. Background Professional nursing practice combines two dimensions of caring: instrumental care and expressive care. Instrumental care focuses on physical health needs, in terms of efficiency and employs interventions based on evidence. Expressive care is patient‐centred and based on the interpersonal relationship. It requires caring attitudes that include respect, kindness, sensitivity and patience. The Caring Behaviours Inventory is a tool designed to assess the care expressed through the behaviours nurses perform, contextualised within the Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring. Methods A systematic review following PRISMA recommendations. Scopus, PubMed and CINAHL databases were consulted using the keywords “Caring Behaviours Inventory” AND “Nursing”. The Joanna Briggs Institute tool was used for the quality appraisal. A conceptual analysis and a thematic synthesis were performed for data extraction. Results 11 articles were selected. Three categories were identified: nature of caring, congruence between perceived care by patients and nurses, and factors associated with the expression of care. Discussion An emphasis on care of an instrumental nature was identified. The perception of patients differs from that of nurses, patients perceive a lower level of expressive caring than the one nurses believe to deliver. Caring behaviours are affected by the working environment, nurses' emotional intelligence and coping skills, and socio‐demographic characteristics. Conclusion This paper described the findings of previous research regarding the nature of care that is transmitted and received in clinical practice. Results highlight an emphasis on the instrumental aspect of the nursing care according to the patients' perception. Relevance to clinical practice Findings summarised in this review could contribute to a better understanding of the nursing care. Results reported in this paper could also help to improve the quality of care delivered by nurses as well as patient‐centeredness

    Emergency and critical care professionals' opinion on escape room as a health sciences evaluation game: A cross-sectional descriptive study

    New teaching and evaluation methods are growing in health sciences. The escape room is a game that is showing benefits for assessing knowledge and important competencies in healthcare professionals. The aim of this study is to analyse the opinion of emergency and critical care professionals on the use of escape rooms as an evaluation game.A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted using an ad-hoc questionnaire with a Likert-type scale. The study included emergency and critical care professionals who participated in the escape room "The Frustrated Emergency and Critical Care Professional," that took place during an emergency and critical care national congress. Data collection was carried out in June 2019.The sample was composed of n = 50 emergency and critical care professionals, 52% of whom were physicians and 48% were nurses. Professionals believe that this is a good teaching game for evaluation and useful for strengthen knowledge (4.7 points), as well as to improve teamwork and the ability to work under pressure (4.9).The escape room is a useful evaluation game in the context of emergency and critical care units that also allows training the teamwork and working under pressure competencies.The authors want to thank SEMES for the opportunity of developing and executing the escape room during their congress

    Factors related to the appearance and development of burnout in nursing students: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    IntroductionBurnout may be suffered not only by experienced nurses, but also by those in training. The university environment can be highly stressful for student nurses, who are exposed to various stress-producing situations.AimThe aim of this study is to identify and analyse the main risk factors for burnout among nursing students.MethodsA systematic review with meta-analysis was performed. The search equation used was “Burnout AND Nursing students”. Quantitative primary studies on burnout in nursing students, and related risk factors published in English or Spanish and with no restriction by year of publication were included.ResultsA sample of n = 33 studies were included. Three variables are identified can influence burnout in nursing students: academic, interpersonal, environmental and/or social factors. The meta-analyses, with the higher sample of n = 418 nursing students, show that some personality factors, empathy, and resilience are correlated with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment.ConclusionThe personality factors that can influence the development of burnout in nursing students, such as resilience and empathy, among others, must be taken into account when preventing the appearance and treating burnout. Professors should teach nursing students to prevent and recognize the most frequent symptoms of burnout syndrome

    Effectiveness of real-time classroom interactive competition on academic performance: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    In recent years, different tools have been introduced into the educational landscape to promote active participation and interaction between students and teachers through personal response systems. The evolution of this methodology has allowed students to participate in real-time by answering questions posed. Previous reviews on the effectiveness of real-time classroom interactive competition (RCIC) on academic performance have been performed; however, this research was based only on Kahoot, without considering other RCIC tools or programs. In addition, the RCIC effectiveness at different educational levels and its effect according to the duration of the intervention has not been meta-analytically analyzed until to date. The aim of this meta-analysis was to analyze the RCIC effectiveness in improving academic performance. A search focused on studies from the educational field published from 2010 until September 2022 was performed. Experimental studies with objective and valid data (scores based on tests or exams) were included. From a total of 397 studies considered potentially eligible, 23 studies met the inclusion criteria. The sample was n = 1,877 for the experimental group and n = 1,765 for the control group with an academic improvement in favor to experimental group (MD 7.34; CI [5.31–9.43]; p < 0.001). There was also significant improvement in academic performance when analyzing different educational levels and different tools. In addition, both short-term interventions (two weeks or less in duration) and long-term (from two weeks to one year in duration) were effective. Therefore, RCIC interventions seem to be an effective strategy to improve academic performance

    Factores de riesgo y niveles de burnout en enfermeras de atención primaria: una revisión sistemática

    Objetivo: Conocer los factores de riesgo y los niveles de burnout en enfermeras de atención primaria. Metodología: Se realizó una revisión sistemática. Fuentes de datos: Se consultaron CINAHL, CUIDEN, LILACS, Pubmed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect y Scopus. Las ecuaciones de búsqueda fueron: «burnout AND community health nursing» y «burnout AND primary care nursing». La búsqueda se realizó en octubre del 2015. Selección de estudios: La muestra final fue de n = 12. Se incluyeron estudios primarios cuantitativos que utilizasen el Maslach Burnout Inventory para evaluar el burnout en enfermeras de atención primaria, sin restricción por fecha de publicación. Extracción de datos: Las principales variables fueron la media y desviación típica de las 3 dimensiones del burnout, las prevalencias de niveles bajos, medios y altos de cada dimensión, y los factores sociodemográficos, laborales y psicológicos que potencialmente influyen en su desarrollo. Resultados: Los estudios muestran prevalencias de cansancio emocional alto, por lo general, entre el 23 y el 31%. Las prevalencias de despersonalización alta y realización personal baja muestran heterogeneidad, variando entre el 8-32 y el 4-92% de la muestra respectivamente. Los estudios informan de que las enfermeras con mayor edad, mayor antigüedad laboral, ansiedad y depresión, entre otras variables, presentan mayores niveles de burnout, mientras que aquellas con mayor sueldo, satisfacción laboral alta, apoyo de la organización y buen autoconcepto lo padecen menos. Conclusión: El cansancio emocional alto es la principal dimensión del burnout afectada en la enfermería de atención primaria. En despersonalización y realización personal existe heterogeneidad. Debe prevenirse el burnout en estos profesionales potenciando los factores protectores y vigilando su aparición en los que presenten factores de riesgo

    Analysis of the Anti-Vaccine Movement in Social Networks: A Systematic Review.

    The aim of this study was to analyze social networks' information about the anti-vaccine movement. A systematic review was performed in PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL and CUIDEN databases. The search equations were: "vaccine AND social network" and "vaccine AND (Facebook[title] OR Twitter[title] OR Instagram[title] OR YouTube[title])". The final sample was n = 12, including only articles published in the last 10 years, in English or Spanish. Social networks are used by the anti-vaccine groups to disseminate their information. To do this, these groups use different methods, including bots and trolls that generate anti-vaccination messages and spread quickly. In addition, the arguments that they use focus on possible harmful effects and the distrust of pharmaceuticals, promoting the use of social networks as a resource for finding health-related information. The anti-vaccine groups are able to use social networks and their resources to increase their number and do so through controversial arguments, such as the economic benefit of pharmaceuticals or personal stories of children to move the population without using reliable or evidence-based content

    Prevalence of burnout syndrome in oncology nursing: A meta-analytic study.

    To determine the prevalence of high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and low personal accomplishment in nursing professionals in oncology services. A meta-analytical study was performed. The search was carried out in March 2017 in Pubmed, CINAHL, Scopus, Scielo, Proquest, CUIDEN, and LILACS databases. Studies using Maslach Burnout Inventory for the assessment of burnout were included. The total sample of oncology nurses was n = 9959. The total number of included studies was n = 17, with n = 21 samples for the meta-analysis of emotional exhaustion and n = 18 for depersonalization and low personal accomplishment. The prevalence of emotional exhaustion and of depersonalization was 30% (95% CI = 26%-33%) and 15% (95% CI = 9%-23%), respectively, and that of low personal performance was 35% (95% CI = 27%-43%). The are many oncology nurses with emotional exhaustion and low levels of personal accomplishment. The presence and the risk of burnout among these staff members are considerable
