Situation of the Science Libraries in Argentine

The purpose of this work is to introduce the present-day situation of the Libraries of Science in the Argentine Republic, emphasising on there possibilities of access to information. The first division that we can do in this area is: special libraries and academic libraries. This is our starting point. We also point out the Programs or Projects originated in the Ministry of Culture and Education that directly affect the present situation of academic libraries, like the University Interconnection Network (RIU), the Fund for the Improviment of the University Quality (FOMEC), and the University Information System (SIU)

La conducta informativa de los físicos: un estudio cualitativo de usuarios

The work analyzes information seeking behavior of students who are in the process of getting a PhD in Physics or who have recently done so. The analysis was made within the sense making approach which is centered in the user. An attempt is made to explain situations in the seek and use of information in terms of the sources, the relevance judgment criteria, organizational strategies as well as information presentation strategies. The study also looks at the physicists feelings during the information seeking process and the way the idea of information evolves in their minds throughout their PhD

La conducta informativa de los físicos: un estudio cualitativo de usuarios

El propósito de este artículo es examinar la conducta informativa en el proceso de búsqueda y uso de la información de físicos que están en proceso o han concluido recientemente su tesis doctoral. Este estudio se realizó desde el abordaje del sense making centrado en el usuario. Se intenta explicar las situaciones comprendidas dentrodel proceso de búsqueda y uso de la información, en términos de elección de fuentes, criterios de juicio de relevancia utilizados, estrategias de organización, y estrategias de presentación de la información, tanto como los sentimientos de los físicos y la definición que dan de la información.The work analizes information seeking behavior of students who are in the process of getting a PhD in Physics or who have recently done so. Informe de la Visita a la Universidad Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp)

En el marco del convenio entre la Universidad de Campinas y la Universidad de Buenos Aires, efectuamos una visita a la UNICAMP formando parte de una comisión, integrada por 6 miembros, representantes de distintas áreas de investigación y de información de la Facultad. El presente trabajo pretende trasladar la experiencia adquirida, en la visita al Sistema de Bibliotecas de la Universidad de Campinas. Poniendo especial atención en la cultura de trabajo cooperativo, desarrollo de consorcios, siendo estas dos herramientas fundamentales, para lograr un mejor aprovechamiento de los recursos disponibles en la gestión de la información.In the framework of the agreement between the Universidad de Campinas and the University of Buenos Aires, we visited the UNICAMP, as a part of a six members commission representing various areas of research and information management of the Faculty. The present work aims at implementing the experience gathered during the visit to the Library System of Universidad de Campinas. We pay special attention to issues concerning "culture of cooperative work" and "development of consortiums", which we consider two key tools for achieving a better utilization of the available resources in the management of information.Publicad

Paradigm change in scientific communication

The current pattern of scholarly publishing goes through times of dramatic changes. The model of open archives is presently being developed in several central countries. The aim of this initiative is to facilitate the efficient dissemination of scholarly information, building global virtual archives of scientific literature, with free and irrestricted access through Web servers. The roots of this remarkable improvement lie so much on technological developments in computer science and telecommunications, as well as on the need to change the traditional scientific communication model. The delay in transferring research results and the ever increasing cost of scholarly journals is perceived as an obstacle in the effective dissemination of scientific results, and, therefore, to the progress of science. Three initiatives are sketched, being implemented at present in the USA, who have pioneered this new model from the first e-print archive in Los Alamos National Laboratory, in 1991.Publicad

Social sciences and humanities research data and metadata: A perspective from thematic data repositories

This paper studies research data repositories in the social sciences and humanities (SSH), from the Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data), paying particular attention to metadata models used to describe the datasets included in them. 397 repositories are reviewed at the general level, including those of a multidisciplinary nature. We discuss and reflect on the special features of research data in these disciplines, and on coverage and information collected by re3data. The metadata schemas and standards most commonly used in SSH repositories are analyzed, with special emphasis on the six main repositories
