Changing channels: altering the dis-course of âinvasiveâ species education
This portfolio is focused on two discourses around "invasive" species, namely the
dominant Western science narratives that emphasize elimination, control, and management and
an Indigenous perspective that takes a longer view that recognizes perpetual change in
ecosystems. Braiding these worldviews together may offer a more humane and healthier
approach to not only conservation science but also "invasive" species education. There are four
tasks in this portfolio. The first is a literature review that provides an overview of Western and
Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies in regards to conservation science, relationships to
Land, and other beings with whom we share a life, zeroing in on "invasive" species. Some of the
educational implications of these discourses are woven throughout the literature review. The
second task in my portfolio focuses explicitly on education and involves a review of current
âinvasiveâ species education in the Ontario environmental science curriculum, as well as
observations from my experiences as an interpreter about how "invasive" species are discussed.
The third task is an interpretive program focused on "invasive" species that applies ideas from
the literature review in a practical way. The fourth and final task is a reflection paper on my
learning journey

This thesis, which pertains to the philosophical domain of inquiry called the ethics of belief, at the crossroads of philosophy of mind, epistemology and ethics, aims at assessing the viability of an influent argumentative strategy in favour of anti-pragmatism about reasons for belief. According to anti-pragmatism, there are no practical normative reasons for belief. The constitutivist strategy, as I call it, purports to show that anti-pragmatism is true by appealing to constitutive, intrinsic features of belief. The aim of this thesis is double: first, it is to give a portrait of the landscape of constitutivist arguments against practical reasons for belief. Second, it is to evaluate the merits of these arguments. In order to do so, I present a critical analysis of the two main constitutivist arguments that is grounded in recent works about the aim of belief, raisons for belief and epistemic norms. My conclusion is that the constitutivist strategy suffers from serious defects which threaten its viability
In research and government institutions, socio-professional integration is well known as one of the main integration catalysts for immigrants. Likewise, Quebec government chooses most of its immigrants depending on their socio-professional integration potential on Quebecâs job market. This potential is measured, among others, according to the level of education. Yet, numerous immigrants enter Quebec with very few years of study. While many scholars investigate highly qualified immigrantâs integration processes, little is known about low qualified immigrantâs integration processes. This qualitative study specifically aims to explore the professional integration experience of low qualified immigrants by using the transition theoryâs concepts. The data was collected during interviews with seven low qualified immigrants engaged in a socio-professional integration program. It allowed a better understanding of the motivations driving these people to enter the labour market with support from a socio-professional integration program, to identify personal and environmental attributes favorizing this process and to explore adaptations enabling its orderly conduc
-- ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the problematics linked to abandonment in early life and the consequences of that experience on the building of my identity. The epistemological foundation of research in the study of psychosocial practices suggests that the appreciation and thorough understanding of such an experience could unveil not only the ways in which the abandonment syndrome manifests, but also the strategies that would allow me to unlock their grip and gain legitimacy. My training and research are motivated by a sincere will to seek freedom and develop my ability to be and my ability to act. In my opinion, by understanding how abandonment has played out in my life, by naming its effects and by recognizing the tools I have given myself to this day, I have access to a vast area of investigation that is likely to allow a more accurate redefinition of the person that is both subject and researcher. It is also likely to lessen the suffering. These two lines of approach uphold most of my training and research activities, which are heuristic in nature. One of my findings indicates that auto-fictional writing is a healthy way to free oneself from the stigma of childhood trauma. I have realized that this type of writing has a cathartic power, and it has helped me rebuild my legitimacy as well as my ability to be and my ability to act. -- Mot(s) clĂ©(s) en anglais : Search for meaning, abandonment syndrome, search for identity, legitimacy, ability to be and ability to act, support, self-support
Through interview excerpts with women living or having lived hidden or visible homelessness, the authors show how these women are victims of rights violation related to their status as women. These violations of rights reveal how violence, refusal to accomplish a role as « informal » caregiver as well as poverty might lead to homelessness. Distress linked to violence, poverty and traditional gender role compliance seem also to foster dependence (use of drugs and alcohol) and mental health problems that are often linked to causes of homelessness. To find durable answers to homelessness, work on right promotion is thus insufficient. It is necessary to also work on the structural mechanism of womenâs oppression and its by-products that are poverty, violence and imposed domestic work. The authors present three challenges for intervention: the invisibility of women at risk, the necessity to maintain and develop services which take into account structural factors notably for poor women and their children and work for rights recognition
Epistemic injustices and participatory research: A research agenda at the crossroads of university and community
This article presents an innovative framework to evaluate participatory research. The framework, comprising both a methodology and a self-assessment tool, was developed through a participatory approach to knowledge production and mobilisation. This process took place over the last two years as we, a multidisciplinary team made up of researchers and community-based organisation members from the Groupe de recherche et de formation sur la pauvreté au Québec, were building a scientific program on social injustices and participatory research.
We argue that participatory research can help provide a university-community co-constructed response to epistemic injustices embedded within the processes of knowledge production. From our perspective, the mobilisation of knowledge from the university and the community, initiated at the earliest stages of the creation of a research team, is part of a critical approach to the academic production of knowledge. It also constitutes a laboratory for observing, understanding and attempting to reduce epistemic injustices through building bridges between team members.
The article focuses on two dimensions of the framework mentioned above: (1) The methodology we established to build co-learning spaces at the crossroads of university and community-based organisations (recruitment of a coordinator to organise and facilitate the workshops, informal and friendly meetings, regular clarification of the process and rules of operation, time for everyone to express themselves, informal preparatory meetings for those who wanted them, financial compensation where required, etc.); and (2) A self-assessment tool available in open access that we built during the process to help academics and their partners engage in a reflexive evaluation of participatory research processes from the point of view of epistemic injustices. Throughout we pay particular attention to challenges inherent in our research program and our responses, and finish with some concluding thoughts on key issues that emerged over the course of two yearsâ research
