Aim : This study aims to examine the trends and issues in Japanese and foreign research papers on nursing care for young women with breast cancer. Methods : We searched the online version of the CINAHL and Ichushi-Web Ver. 4 for the keywords “breast cancer”, “young women”,and “nursing”or“care.” Results : 14papers were chosen for analysis. The research themes pertained to sexual and reproductive health, cancer experience, the role of the family, and rehabilitation needs. Conclusion : This study found that research on nursing for young women with breast cancer was still in its infancy. We expect that,in the future, foundational research on young women with breast cancer will be undertaken, not only overseas, but in Japan as well, and that there will be active efforts to create nursing support methods for these young women

Laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy for early gastric cancer and laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstone with situs inversus totalis: a case report

We report our case of laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy with D1 + β lymph node dissection for a patient with early gastric cancer and laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstone with situs inversus totalis. A superficial elevated lesion was found on the lesser curvature of the antrum. The preoperative diagnosis was cStage IA (cT1, cN0, cH0, cP0, cM0). A 1 cm-sized gallstone was found in the fundus through upper abdominal ultrasound. A laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy with standard D2 lymph node dissection for early gastric cancer and laparoscopic cholecystectomy was successfully performed by not shifting the monitor to the left and right and not changing operator's position without additional blood loss and time. The number of retrieved lymph nodes was 36. We have not found any abnormal course of blood vessels except for the right/left inversion. Billroth I reconstruction was performed through end-to-side anastomosis. Based on a histopathological examination, a 1.5 × 1.5 cm, submucosal (sm3), moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (pT1, pN0, sH0, sP0, sM0, stage IA) was diagnosed. The postoperative course was favorable and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 7

A 47-year-old man was referred to Seoul National University Bundang Hospital with an ulcerative lesion in the midbody of the stomach. Computed tomography revealed that he was a situs inversus totalis (SIT) patient. Robot-assisted distal gastrectomy with D1+β lymph node dissection and Billroth II anastomosis were performed. With the aid of robotic surgery, the surgeon didn't need to change his position and could perform the surgery without any confusion resulting from the patient's reversed anatomy. The operation took 300 minutes, with no intraoperative complications. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 8. The final pathologic report was pT3N3a by American Joint Committee on Cancer 7th tumor-node-metastasis staging. We successfully performed robot-assisted distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer in a SIT patient. We believe that this is the first case of robotic surgery reported in a SIT patient with gastric cancer

Development and Validation of the Breast Cancer Survivors Resilience Scale

This study aimed to develop a breast cancer survivor resilience scale (BCRS) and verify its reliability and validity. We constructed subscales based on the results of a conceptual analysis of resilience and analysis of factors that promote resilience. We verified the internal validity of the subscales by enlisting the opinion of nursing experts and conducting a preliminary survey. This process yielded a draft scale consisting of 64 items. We then conducted the main study on 230 respondents and a re-test on 37 respondents. The results yielded a scale with two factor classes -“ individual protective” factors and “social protective” factors - and 16 items. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.93 and the re-test correlation coefficient was 0.89, indicating that the scale has internal consistency and stability. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated statistically significant results for construct validity, criterion-related validity, and discriminant validity, thus confirming that these types of validity were sufficiently present in the scale. The BCRS has sound reliability and validity, and that with clinical application, it can become an effective scale for measuring resilience in breast cancer survivors

Trends and issues related to studies on cancer patient empowerment

The purpose of this study was to analyze Japanese and foreign papers related to the empowerment of cancer patients, and to identify trends and issues rel ated to studies on cancer patient empowerment . We searched the web version of the Ichushi-Web Ver.4, PubMed and CINAHL with the keywords "empower," "empowerment," "cancer," and "patient," and found one Japanese and six foreign papers meeting the selection criteria of this study. These papers were published between 1997 and 2004, and most study designs were factor analysis studies. To summarize, the research revealed that in interpreting the concept ofcancer patient empowerment, emphasis was placed on partnership andselfirespect, and that the process of empowering cancer patients was aggregated into three stages : recognition of lack of power; working out how to control one!s cancer, treatment, mind, and body; and change of values. Also, the presence of significant others, health care professionals, and fe11ow sufferers played an impor- tant role in the process. It is necessary to grasp the essence and reality of empowerment based on the characteristics of cancer patients, and work towards developing a practical nursing intervention model and evaluation scale in line with the conceptual framework of empowerment

Objective:The objective of this study is to clarify the characteristics and construct of empowerment in cancer patients and to examine the utility of the concept in relation to patient support. Method:Thirty seven literatures were extracted between 2000 and 2010 in the following five fields: nursing, public health, social science, psychology, and pedagogy. An analysis was conducted employing Rodgers’ concept analysis approach. Results:The concept of empowerment in cancer patients comprised the following 6 attributes:[existence of motivation],[awareness and reinforcement of inner strength], [acquisition ofproblem-solving abilities],[self-directive and independent activities],[reframing],and[construction of partnership and interaction]. And 4 antecedents,5consequences are extracted from the analysis. Conclusion:We defined the concept of cancer patient empowerment as “a process of gaining the ability to reframe thoughts about cancer, treatment, and life through the enhancement of active and independent behavior, acquisition of problem-solving abilities, and recognition and einforce-ment of intrinsic strength,on the basis of the patients’motivation, and realized through the interaction within the partnerships constructed between the cancer patients and people surrounding the patient.” This concept can be utilized for the research and practice in the field of cancer care, which aims to support cancer patients in acquiring the power to live their normal lives with cancer
