Optical response of metal nanoparticle chains

    Get PDF
We study the optical responses of metal nanoparticle chains. Multiple scattering calculations are used to study the extinction cross sections of silver nanosphere chains of finite length embedded in a glass matrix. The transmission and reflection coefficients of periodic 2D arrays of silver nanospheres are also calculated to understand the interaction between nanoparticle chains. The results are in agreement with recent experiments. The splitting of plasmon-resonance modes for different polarizations of the incident light are explored. Results on the effect of disorder are also presented.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

    Electric current circuits in astrophysics

    Get PDF
Cosmic magnetic structures have in common that they are anchored in a dynamo, that an external driver converts kinetic energy into internal magnetic energy, that this magnetic energy is transported as Poynting fl ux across the magnetically dominated structure, and that the magnetic energy is released in the form of particle acceleration, heating, bulk motion, MHD waves, and radiation. The investigation of the electric current system is particularly illuminating as to the course of events and the physics involved. We demonstrate this for the radio pulsar wind, the solar flare, and terrestrial magnetic storms

Homologs of genes and anonymous loci on human Chromosome 13 map to mouse Chromosomes 8 and 14

To enhance the comparative map for human Chromosome (Chr) 13, we identified clones for human genes and anonymous loci that cross-hybridized with their mouse homologs and then used linkage crosses for mapping. Of the clones for four genes and twelve anonymous loci tested, cross-hybridization was found for six, COL4A1, COL4A2, D13S26, D13S35, F10, and PCCA. Strong evidence for homology was found for COL4A1, COL4A2, D13S26, D13S35, and F10, but only circumstantial homology evidence was obtained for PCCA. To genetically map these mouse homologs ( Cf10, Col4a1, Col4a2, D14H13S26, D8H13S35 , and Pcca-rs ), we used interspecific and intersubspecific mapping panels. D14H13S26 and Pcca-rs were located on the distal portion of mouse Chr 14 extending by ∼30 cM the conserved linkage between human Chr 13 and mouse Chr 14, assuming that Pcca-rs is the mouse homolog of PCCA. By contrast, Cf10, Col4a1, Col4a2 , and D8H13S35 mapped near the centromere of mouse Chr 8, defining a new conserved linkage. Finally, we identified either a closely linked sequence related to Col4a2 , or a recombination hot-spot between Col4a1 and Col4a2 that has been conserved in humans and mice.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47022/1/335_2004_Article_BF00352413.pd

On extending the concept of double negativity to acoustic waves

    No full text
The realization of double negative electromagnetic wave media, sometimes called left-handed materials (LHMs) or metamaterials, have drawn considerable attention in the past few years. We will examine the possibility of extending the concept to acoustic waves. We will see that acoustic metamaterials require both the effective density and bulk modulus to be simultaneously negative in the sense of an effective medium. If we can find a double negative (negative density and bulk modulus) acoustic medium, it will be an acoustic analogue of Veselago's medium in electromagnetism, and share many novel consequences such as negative refractive index and backward wave characteristics. We will give one example of such a medium

Earth is an extremely valuable resource for every nation, it plays a very important role in the survival and development of mankind. However, in many localities, land use is still irrational and unsustainable. One of the main reasons is associated with a limited level of knowledge, as well as a person’s awareness of the importance of the earth. Therefore, in the operation and public administration of the earth, many difficulties and shortcomings arise. In addition, the current pace of industrialization and urbanization, together with the effects of the population explosion, has led to an increase in land use demand for socio-economic development. Therefore, it is necessary to encourage state land management, especially the registration and issuance of certificates for land use rights, ownership of houses and property assigned to landЗемля является чрезвычайно ценным ресурсом для каждой нации, она играет очень важную роль в выживании и развитии человечества.

Rock-Socketed Large Diameter Bored Pile and Geophysical Survey in Cavernous Karst Area: Tin Shui Wai Public Library Cum Indoor Recreation Centre

    No full text
AbstractThis paper will present the geological and engineering considerations in the planning, design and construction of a public library cum an indoor recreation centre in cavernous karst area at Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong. An appraisal was carried out to determine the effect of geological consttraints on the foundation design and to assess the suitability of difffferent types of foundation systems. Sinkhole hazard is a major challenge to engineers when founding a structure and/or carrying out excavation in cavernous karst area. Formation of a sinkhole usually leads to a sudden depression on the ground surface caused by the collapse of cavities. This paper will describe how the most appropriate foundation system was chosen and how the sinkhole hazard was investigated and/or dealt with at the planning, design and construction stages, especially the experience in using cross-hole seismic tomography to delineate the spatial extent of cavities within the karst area. Moreover, in Hong Kong, although rock-socketted steel H-piiles and large diameter bored piles have widely been employed as foundation, limited local experience and design parameters have been published for the piles installed in cavernous karst area. This paper will discuss the allowable shaft friction between marble and concrete pile at the socket section being adopted in this project
