    Localized transverse bursts in inclined layer convection

    We investigate a novel bursting state in inclined layer thermal convection in which convection rolls exhibit intermittent, localized, transverse bursts. With increasing temperature difference, the bursts increase in duration and number while exhibiting a characteristic wavenumber, magnitude, and size. We propose a mechanism which describes the duration of the observed bursting intervals and compare our results to bursting processes in other systems.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figure

    Complex Langevin Equation and the Many-Fermion Problem

    We study the utility of a complex Langevin (CL) equation as an alternative for the Monte Carlo (MC) procedure in the evaluation of expectation values occurring in fermionic many-body problems. We find that a CL approach is natural in cases where non-positive definite probability measures occur, and remains accurate even when the corresponding MC calculation develops a severe ``sign problem''. While the convergence of CL averages cannot be guaranteed in principle, we show how convergent results can be obtained in three examples ranging from simple one-dimensional integrals over quantum mechanical models to a schematic shell model path integral.Comment: 19 pages, 10 PS figures embedded in tex

    Proton decay from the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in 58^{58}Ni

    Proton decay from the 3ω\hbar\omega isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in 58^{58}Ni has been measured using the (α,αp\alpha,\alpha'p) reaction at a bombarding energy of 386 MeV to investigate its decay properties. We have extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between inelastically scattered α\alpha particles at forward angles and decay protons emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying states of 57^{57}Co have been determined, and the results compared to predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of protons decaying to the low-lying states in 57^{57}Co were analyzed for a more detailed understanding of the structure of the ISGDR. It is found that there are differences in the structure of the ISGDR as a function of excitation energy.Comment: Minor changes after review. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Though an unlikely comparison between the development of the genomic sciences and the building of gambling casinos in the city state of Singapore, it reflects on the nature of political and technological investments in this South-East Asian city. It argues that Western expectations of a link between scientific practices, and civic epistemologies linked to democratic decision-making, are replaced by a rather different future orientation to scientific experimentation, economic investment and social development in Singapore

    Magnetic properties in a charge ordered state are examined for the extended Hubbard model at half-filling. Magnetic excitations, magnetic susceptibilities and a nuclear spin relaxation rate are calculated with taking account of fluctuations around the mean-field solution.     Multi-Orbital Molecular Compound (TTM-TTP)I_3: Effective Model and Fragment Decomposition

    The electronic structure of the molecular compound (TTM-TTP)I_3, which exhibits a peculiar intra-molecular charge ordering, has been studied using multi-configuration ab initio calculations. First we derive an effective Hubbard-type model based on the molecular orbitals (MOs) of TTM-TTP; we set up a two-orbital Hamiltonian for the two MOs near the Fermi energy and determine its full parameters: the transfer integrals, the Coulomb and exchange interactions. The tight-binding band structure obtained from these transfer integrals is consistent with the result of the direct band calculation based on density functional theory. Then, by decomposing the frontier MOs into two parts, i.e., fragments, we find that the stacked TTM-TTP molecules can be described by a two-leg ladder model, while the inter-fragment Coulomb energies are scaled to the inverse of their distances. This result indicates that the fragment picture that we proposed earlier [M.-L. Bonnet et al.: J. Chem.     Photoproduction of Lambda(1405) and Sigma^{0}(1385) on the proton at E_\gamma = 1.5-2.4 GeV

    Differential cross sections for γpK+Λ(1405)\gamma p \to K^+\Lambda(1405) and γpK+Σ0(1385)\gamma p \to K^+\Sigma^0(1385) reactions have been measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV and the angular range of 0.8<cos(Θ)<1.00.8<\cos(\Theta)<1.0 for the K+K^+ scattering angle in the center-of-mass system. This data is the first measurement of the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) photoproduction cross section. The lineshapes of \LamS measured in Σ+π\Sigma^+\pi^- and Σπ+\Sigma^-\pi^+ decay modes were different with each other, indicating a strong interference of the isospin 0 and 1 terms of the Σπ\Sigma\pi scattering amplitudes. The ratios of \LamS production to \SigS production were measured in two photon energy ranges: near the production threshold (1.5<Eγ<2.01.5<E_\gamma<2.0 GeV) and far from it (2.0<Eγ<2.42.0 <E_\gamma<2.4 GeV). The observed ratio decreased in the higher photon energy region, which may suggest different production mechanisms and internal structures for these hyperon resonances
