The Seaside Resident – A Citizen of the World? On Port City Societies and Cosmopolitanism The article investigates the acclaimed social openness of port cities, subsumed under the label of cosmopolitanism. It argues that in the study of maritime urban diversity from a historical perspective, it is important to consider diversity not only as object of scrutiny, but also as part of the approach. When studying cosmopolitanism, one should aim to integrate all of the four common definitions: a) publicly visible diversity, b) an ability of individual or collective agents to navigate between differently coded spheres, c) an active practice of sociabilities that cross community borders, and d) a belief and a policy of enhancing cohesion without a monolithic base. When tracing the failures of cosmopolitanism, one must consider that the violent communalist or nationalist activism manifesting itself in port cities is not simply the intrusion of an antagonistic outside world, but rather the flipside of maritime urbanity, as both ethnocentrism and cosmopolitanism thrive under the same conditions

Port Cities in Global Perspective: An Introduction This volume examines the phenomena of mobility and migration in port cities at the height of the steamship era, ca. 1860-1930. The inherent contradiction that ports were the source of a city’s (or a country’s or an Empire’s) esteem in the world on the one hand and that on the other, the ports’ unwanted and uncontrollable processes prompted negative reactions, is the common thread of all articles. Our approach to the study of port cities focuses on the contact in ports between people of different origin. This contact situation has the potential to put into question one’s concept of the city, the nation, the religious community, civilization, or even time. By consequence, it can threaten existing power structures and has the capacity to alter or reaffirm urban and national identities

The exhibition "Osmanen in Hamburg - a relationship history during the First World War" which was shown in the Hambrug State and University Library from November 6th, 2014 to January 4th, 2015, devoted itself to the 100th anniversary of the "Urkatastrophe" (the Great War) to he German-Ottoman relations from the perspective of Hamburg, and focused on the years between 1914 and 1918. The archival objects were presented for the first time and are documented in this publication. They illustrate not only economic, diplomatic and cultural contacts., but also give an impression of the presence and the life of the ethnically and religiously heterogeneous group of the Ottomans (e.g. Armenians, Greeks, Sephardic Jews, Muslim Turks) in Hamburg who can be traced back to the 19th century. This catalog, however, does not only want to document the exhibition which was divided into eight sections. With an additional eight contributions, it provides a deeper insight into the complex and ambivalent Ottoman-German and/ or Hamburg-Ottoman relations. In addition to transcultural encounters such as cultural differences between the time of 1850 and 1909 the colonial ambitions and oriental emblems of the German Reich, as well as the role of German women in the Ottoman Empire between 1914 and 1918, are illuminated in three chapters

Cosmopolitan imperialists and the ottoman port cities. Conflicting logics in the urban social fabric

The study of 19th century Ottoman port cities’ has revealed ample proof of a culture of cosmopolitanism in interethnic sociabilities, but also of antagonizing interethnic confrontation. Existing research has often failed to put both categories of phenomena into perspective. This essay suggests the micro-historical analysis of port city residents to understand which elements further cosmopolitan modes of interaction and which can lead to nationalist reactions. This approach does not divide the city residents into two neatly separated camps, but reveals the contradictory nature of social interaction and an urban society that had reconciled itself to a life between these opposing poles

Background Checklists are a powerful safety tool in aviation. Their use in cockpits has proven to be effective for many years to decrease the number of mistakes made by pilots in the environment of the complex system airplane. Safety checklists are more and more being introduced in medicine and clinical operations but not in human biomedical research so far. Thus the goal of this thesis is to implement medical safety checklists in the context of complex human biomedical studies and evaluate whether or not they can improve medical safety and scientific data quality. Methods Between January and April 2016, the second campaign of a longterm bed rest study was hosted at the :envihab facility of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne. Three complex experiments were chosen which were performed at least twice for each subject: 1. Muscle biopsy, 2. Tilt table tests, 3. Bicycle Spiro-ergometry. Before developing and implementing checklists for the above-mentioned experiments, data was collected to evaluate the performance regarding subject safety and scientifc data quality. During the baseline data collection phase in January, 36 experiments on 12 subjects were analyzed. The actual bed rest phase, which lasted for 60 days, was used to generate a Visual Basic based website, which allows electronic checklists to be conducted on tablet computers. The application enables users to open and conduct predefined checklists and save comments and photos for documentation purposes. Furthermore, checklist templates can be edited and thus adapted to changing requirements of upcoming studies. During the recovery phase at the end of the campaign, each of the three experiments was repeated for every subject. The electronic checklists were introduced to and tested by DLR personnel conducting the experiments. The performance was analyzed again using the same indicators to evaluate the effect checklists have on medical safety and data quality. Results The overall performance combining all three types of experiments was 67% before the checklists were introduced and rose to 97% afterward. Subject safety performance was 39% at baseline and 90% after the introduction of checklists. Considering the quality of scientific data, the performance was increased from 64% to 99% with the help of electronic checklists. Conclusions Implementation of electronic checklists in human biomedical studies was associated with concomitant increase in medical safety and scientifc data quality among subjects participating in complex experiments during a long-term bed rest study at the German Aerospace Center in Cologne

Team Wärme of the CC4E at the HAW-Hamburg are developing the simulation software, Jarvis, for the thermo-hydraulic calculation of district heating grids for project Smart Heat Grid Hamburg. In Jarvis, complex simulation models consist of a variety of single component models. Each of them represents a part of the real system. In this paper, a method is being developed to verify and validate the component models of Jarvis. Therefore, established and innovative techniques from the field of verification and validation are integrated into the model building process, and a comprehensive method is being developed. Certain techniques will be tested for the purpose of applicability
