S_4-symmetry of 6j-symbols and Frobenius-Schur indicators in rigid monoidal C^*-categories
We show that a left-rigid monoidal C^*-category with irreducible monoidal
unit is also a sovereign and spherical category. Defining a Frobenius-Schur
type indicator we obtain selection rules for the fusion coefficients of
irreducible objects. As a main result we prove S_4-invariance of 6j-symbols in
such a category.Comment: 21 pages + 16 pages with figures; LaTeX2e plus macro package XYpic;

Asymmetric nuclear matter in a Hartree-Fock approach to non-linear QHD
The Equation of State (EOS) for asymmetric nuclear matter is discussed
starting from a phenomenological hadronic field theory of Serot-Walecka type
including exchange terms. In a model with self interactions of the scalar
sigma-meson we show that the Fock terms naturally lead to isospin effects in
the nuclear EOS. These effects are quite large and dominate over the
contribution due to isovector mesons. We obtain a potential symmetry term of
"stiff" type, i.e. increasing with baryon density and an interesting behaviour
of neutron/proton effective masses of relevance for transport properties of
asymmetric dense matter.Comment: 12 pages (LATEX), 3 Postscript figures, revised versio
On 1-qubit channels
The entropy H_T(rho) of a state rho with respect to a channel T and the
Holevo capacity of the channel require the solution of difficult variational
problems. For a class of 1-qubit channels, which contains all the extremal
ones, the problem can be significantly simplified by associating an Hermitian
antilinear operator theta to every channel of the considered class. The
concurrence of the channel can be expressed by theta and turns out to be a flat
roof. This allows to write down an explicit expression for H_T. Its maximum
would give the Holevo (1-shot) capacity.Comment: 12 pages, several printing or latex errors correcte
Fluorescence Blinking and Photobleaching of Single Terrylenediimide Molecules Studied with a Confocal Microscope
Single terrylenediimide molecules diluted in a 20-nm-thick polyvinylbutyral polymer film were localized and observed by scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy. A modular and compact confocal microscope and the high optical stability of the molecules allowed a repeated imaging and observation over >5 h at room temperature. Most of the molecules showed several “on-off-on” transitions (blinking) on a time scale from seconds to hours, before permanent bleaching occurred. We determined that >1.5 × 10^7 fluorescence photons are emitted from the most-stable molecules before the final bleaching step occurs. Despite the “on-off-on” transitions, however, the overall change in fluorescence intensity, either integrated over each image of a time series or summed for several individual molecules, resembled an exponential-like decay, familiar from measurements of many-molecule ensembles. We also observed the polarization of the fluorescence from single molecules during excitation with circular polarized light. From these measurements, possible rotations of the molecular dipoles were studied. Over a span of 5 h, the polarization angle in most cases did not change by >15-20°. This may explain the slow and small intensity changes but excludes molecular rotation as a reason for the blinking behavior
Symmetry implies independence
Given a quantum system consisting of many parts, we show that symmetry of the
system's state, i.e., invariance under swappings of the subsystems, implies
that almost all of its parts are virtually identical and independent of each
other. This result generalises de Finetti's classical representation theorem
for infinitely exchangeable sequences of random variables as well as its
quantum-mechanical analogue. It has applications in various areas of physics as
well as information theory and cryptography. For example, in experimental
physics, one typically collects data by running a certain experiment many
times, assuming that the individual runs are mutually independent. Our result
can be used to justify this assumption.Comment: LaTeX, contains 4 figure
Degradation of a quantum directional reference frame as a random walk
We investigate if the degradation of a quantum directional reference frame
through repeated use can be modeled as a classical direction undergoing a
random walk on a sphere. We demonstrate that the behaviour of the fidelity for
a degrading quantum directional reference frame, defined as the average
probability of correctly determining the orientation of a test system, can be
fit precisely using such a model. Physically, the mechanism for the random walk
is the uncontrollable back-action on the reference frame due to its use in a
measurement of the direction of another system. However, we find that the
magnitude of the step size of this random walk is not given by our classical
model and must be determined from the full quantum description.Comment: 5 pages, no figures. Comments are welcome. v2: several changes to

DIFFUSE IDIOPATHIC SKELETAL HYPEROSTOSIS (DISH) OF THE SPINE: A CAUSE OF BACK PAIN? A CONTROLLED STUDY
This is the first controlled study of the frequency of back pain in a European caucasian population with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). Elderly patients admitted to hospital for reasons other than back pain were assessed for the presence of spinal DISH using the routine lateral chest radiograph films. A total of 106 probands (82 males, 24 females) with a mean age of 70 years fulfilled the criteria for DISH as defined previously. One hundred and seventyeight patients (117 males, 61 females) not meeting these criteria were used as controls. The prevalence of back pain was assessed by a blinded interviewer using a structured questionnaire. Our primary hymthesis was that spinal DISH positive probands had not had back pain more often than controls. The controlled study showed no statistically significant difference in pain frequency between spinal DISH positive probands and controls at any spinal level. We conclude that back pain does not occur more often in radiographically defined DISH positive probands than in controls. The radiological finding of spinal DISH, as far as it does not lead to stenosis of the spinal canal or dysphagia, thus seems to be a finding without clinical relevanc
THE PREVALENCE OF PALPABLE FINGER JOINT NODULES IN DIFFUSE IDIOPATHIC SKELETAL HYPEROSTOSIS (DISH). A CONTROLLED STUDY
The presence of clinically palpable finger joint nodules a(Heberden's and Bouchard's nodes) was documented in 123 consecutive cases with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) of the thoracic spine and 191 matched DISH negative controls. The prevalence of palpable finger joint nodules was almost twice as frequent in cases with spinal DISH compared to controls (46% versus 31%, X2 = 7.67, P<0.01; multivariate adjusted odds ratio OR = 1.84; 95% CI: 1.14-2.98). This increase was most marked at the proximal interphalangeal joint, in males and in patients up to the age of 65 years. In addition and independent of other variables such as hyperostotic features, age and sex, the prevalence of palpable finger joint nodules was about twice as high in probands with a history of physically heavy work compared to those without (43% ver sus 26%, X = 9.18, P<0.005; multivariate adjusted odds ratio OR = 2.10; 95% CI: 1.26-3.52). From these results we con clude that DISH should be considered as an independent risk factor in the development of finger joint nodule
Polar phonons in some compressively stressed epitaxial and polycrystalline SrTiO3 thin films
Several SrTiO3 (STO) thin films without electrodes processed by pulsed laser
deposition, of thicknesses down to 40 nm, were studied using infrared
transmission and reflection spectroscopy. The complex dielectric responses of
polar phonon modes, particularly ferroelectric soft mode, in the films were
determined quantitatively. The compressed epitaxial STO films on (100)
La0.18Sr0.82Al0.59-Ta0.41O3 substrates (strain 0.9%) show strongly stiffened
phonon responses, whereas the soft mode in polycrystalline film on (0001)
sapphire substrate shows a strong broadening due to grain boundaries and/or
other inhomogeneities and defects. The stiffened soft mode is responsible for a
much lower static permittivity in the plane of the compressed film than in the
bulk samples.Comment: 11 page
