Miniature ingestible telemeter devices to measure deep-body temperature

    Get PDF
A telemetry device comprised of a pill-size ingestible transmitter developed to obtain deep body temperature measurements of a human is described. The device has particular utility in the medical field where deep body temperatures provide an indication of general health

Pill-sized transmitter measures deep body temperature in studies of circadian rhythm and indicates general health. Ingestible device is a compromise between accuracy, circuit complexity, size and transmission range

Beyond you and I: role play and reflection-in-action in communication training

    Get PDF
This article will explore the development of communication training within nurse training. Beginning by outlining current thinking around this practice, it then discusses Schön’s notion of reflective practice and its frequently cited relevance to nursing before pointing out some of its limitations. In particular, it looks at the limitations of the individual being able to critically reflect on their self within a broader social context. Drawing on the theories of Habermas and Bourdieu, it suggests that encouraging a greater awareness of one’s own social context, and hence of one’s own subject position, would develop a deeper awareness of other potential perspectives and a better ability to listen to patients. Finally, it argues for the use of role play in assisting nurses to gain such awareness, particularly in difficult clinical situations such as end-of-life care

e2v CMOS and CCD sensors and systems for astronomy

    Get PDF
e2v designs and manufactures a wide range of sensors for space and astronomy applications. This includes high performance CCDs for X-ray, visible and near-IR wavelengths. In this paper we illustrate the maturity of CMOS capability for these applications; examples are presented together with performance data. The majority of e2v sensors for these applications are back-thinned for highest spectral response and designed for very low read-out noise; the combination delivers high signal to noise ratio in association with a variety of formats and package designs. The growing e2v capability in delivery of sub-systems and cryogenic cameras is illustrated—including the 1.2 Giga-pixel J-PAS camera system

Wheels within wheels: an examination of the nature of psychological explanation via a theoretically oriented history of some mechanical models

    Get PDF
The aim of this thesis is to ask, and attempt to answer, some pertinent questions about that type of psychological explanation which proceeds by simulation, or model building. The method chosen is a detailed examination of some models, mostly 18th and 19th century mechanical ones, together with a theoretically motivated discussion of the relations between these models and the development of psychological theories contemporary with them. Two types of model, formal and intimate, are distinguished, both by their aetiology and by the way they are used by working scientists, and several examples of each type are subjected to scrutiny, as are the intentions of their modellers in building or adopting them. Four main foci of interest emerge: the history of experimental psychology (the myth that experimental psychology was born circa 1870 is exploded); the sociology of science (the impact of developing technology on psychological theory, via the proffering of models, is clearly demonstrated); the philosophy of psychology (issues such as the nature of explanation and the problem of representation are dis¬ cussed); and, last but not least, theoretical psychology (the value of work in cognitive simulation, and of some work in Artificial Intelligence, is stressed and, partly, explained)

Infrared emission from kilonovae: the case of the nearby short hard burst GRB 160821B

    Get PDF
We present constraints on Ks-band emission from one of the nearest short hard gamma-ray bursts, GRB 160821B, at z=0.16, at three epochs. We detect a reddened relativistic afterglow from the jetted emission in the first epoch but do not detect any excess kilonova emission in the second two epochs. We compare upper limits obtained with Keck I/MOSFIRE to multi-dimensional radiative transfer models of kilonovae, that employ composition-dependent nuclear heating and LTE opacities of heavy elements. We discuss eight models that combine toroidal dynamical ejecta and two types of wind and one model with dynamical ejecta only. We also discuss simple, empirical scaling laws of predicted emission as a function of ejecta mass and ejecta velocity. Our limits for GRB 160821B constrain the ejecta mass to be lower than 0.03 Msun for velocities greater than 0.1c. At the distance sensitivity range of advanced LIGO, similar ground-based observations would be sufficiently sensitive to the full range of predicted model emission including models with only dynamical ejecta. The color evolution of these models shows that I-K color spans 7--16 mag, which suggests that even relatively shallow infrared searches for kilonovae could be as constraining as optical searches.Comment: Accepted for Publication in Astrophysical Journal Letter
