Dummy eye measurements of microsaccades: testing the influence of system noise and head movements on microsaccade detection in a popular video-based eye tracker
Whereas early studies of microsaccades have predominantly relied on custom-built eye trackers and manual tagging of microsaccades, more recent work tends to use video-based eye tracking and automated algorithms for microsaccade detection. While data from these newer studies suggest that microsaccades can be reliably detected with video-based systems, this has not been systematically evaluated. I here present a method and data examining microsaccade detection in an often used video-based system (the Eyelink II system) and a commonly used detection algorithm (Engbert & Kliegl, 2003; Engbert & Mergenthaler, 2006). Recordings from human participants and those obtained using a pair of dummy eyes, mounted on a pair of glasses either worn by a human participant (i.e., with head motion) or a dummy head (no head motion) were compared. Three experiments were conducted. The first experiment suggests that when microsaccade measurements make use of the pupil detection mode, microsaccade detections in the absence of eye movements are sparse in the absence of head movements, but frequent with head movements (despite the use of a chin rest). A second experiment demonstrates that by using measurements that rely on a combination of corneal reflection and pupil detection, false microsaccade detections can be largely avoided as long as a binocular criterion is used. A third experiment examines whether past results may have been affected by possible incorrect detections due to small head movements. It shows that despite the many detections due to head movements, the typical modulation of microsaccade rate after stimulus onset is found only when recording from the participants’ eyes
Is it really search or just matching? The influence of goodness, number of stimuli and presentation sequence in same-different tasks
The Goodness of Garner dot patterns has been shown to influence same-different response times in a specific way, which has led to the formulation of a memory search model of pattern comparison. In this model, the space of possible variations of each pattern is searched separately for each pattern in the comparison, resulting in faster response times for patterns that have fewer alternatives. Compared to an alternative explanation based on stimulus encoding plus mental rotation, however, the existing data strongly favor this explanation. To obtain a more constraining set of data to distinguish between the two possible accounts, we extended the original paradigm to a situation in which participants needed to compare three, rather than two patterns and varied the way the stimuli were presented (simultaneously or sequentially). Our findings suggest that neither the memory search nor the encoding plus mental rotation model provides a complete description of the data, and that the effects of Goodness must be understood in a combination of both mechanisms, or in terms of cascades processing
Do you look where I look? Attention shifts and response preparation following dynamic social cues
Studies investigating the effects of observing a gaze shift in another person often apply static images of a person with an averted gaze, while measuring response times to a peripheral target. Static images, however, are unlike how we normally perceive gaze shifts of others. Moreover, response times might only reveal the effects of a cue on covert attention and might fail to uncover cueing effects on overt attention or response preparation. We therefore extended the standard paradigm and measured cueing effects for ore realistic, dynamic cues (video clips),while comparing response times, saccade direction errors and saccade trajectories. Three cues were compared: A social cue, consisting of a eye-gaze shift, and two socially less relevant cues, consisting of a head tilting movement and a person walking past. Similar results were found for the two centrally presented cues (eye-gaze shift and head tilting) on all three response measures, suggesting that cueing is unaffected by the social status of the cue. Interestingly, the cue showing a person walking past showed a dissociation in the direction of the effects on response times on the one hand, and saccade direction errors and latencies on the other hand, suggesting the involvement of two types of (endogenous and exogenous) attention or a distinction between attention and saccadic response preparation. Our results suggest that by using dynamic cues and multiple response measures, properties of cueing can be revealed that would not be found otherwise

In modeling visual backward masking, the focus has been on temporal effects. More
specifically, an explanation has been sought as to why strongest masking can
occur when the mask is delayed with respect to the target. Although interesting
effects of the spatial layout of the mask have been found, only a few attempts
have been made to model these phenomena. Here, we elaborate a structurally
simple model which employs lateral excitation and inhibition together with
different neural time scales to explain many spatial and temporal aspects of
backward masking. We argue that for better understanding of visual masking, it
is vitally important to consider the interplay of spatial and temporal factors
together in one single model

The effects of social and symbolic cues on visual search: cue shape trumps biological relevance
Arrow signs are often used in crowded environments such as airports to direct observers’ attention to objects and areas of interest. Research with social and symbolic cues presented in isolation at fixation has suggested that social cues (such as eye gaze and pointing hands) are more effective in directing observers’ attention than symbolic cues. The present work examines whether in visual search, social cues would therefore be more effective than arrows, by asking participants to locate target objects in crowded displays that were cued by eye-gaze, pointing hands or arrow cues. Results show an advantage for arrow cues, but only for arrow cues that stand out from the surroundings. The results confirm earlier suggestions that in extrafoveal vision cue shape trumps biological relevance. Eye movements suggest that these cueing effects rely predominantly on extrafoveal perception of the cues

Mind your step: the effects of mobile phone use on gaze behavior in stair climbing
Stair walking is a hazardous activity and a common cause of fatal and non-fatal falls. Previous studies have assessed the role of eye movements in stair walking by asking people to repeatedly go up and down stairs in quiet and controlled conditions, while the role of peripheral vision was examined by giving participants specific fixation instructions or working memory tasks. We here extend this research to stair walking in a natural environment with other people present on the stairs and a now common secondary task: Using one's mobile phone. Results show that using the mobile phone strongly draws one's attention away from the stairs, but that the distribution of gaze locations away from the phone is little influenced by using one's phone. Phone use also increased the time needed to walk the stairs, but handrail use remained low. These results indicate that limited foveal vision suffices for adequate stair walking in normal environments, but that mobile phone use has a strong influence on attention, which may pose problems when unexpected obstacles are encountered
The effects of the global structure of the mask in visual backward masking
The visibility of a target can be strongly affected by a trailing mask. Research on visual backward masking has typically focused on the temporal characteristics of masking, whereas non-basic spatial aspects have received much less attention. However, recently, it has been demonstrated that the spatial layout is an important determinant of the strength of a mask. Here, we show that not only local but also global aspects of the mask's spatial layout affect target processing. Particularly, it is the regularity of the mask that plays an important role. Our findings are of importance for theoretical research, as well as for applications of visual masking
Eye movements in surgery: A literature review
With recent advances in eye tracking technology, it is now possible to track surgeons’ eye movements while engaged in a surgical task or when surgical residents practice their surgical skills. Several studies have compared eye movements of surgical experts and novices, developed techniques to assess surgical skill on the basis of eye movements, and examined the role of eye movements in surgical training. We here provide an overview of these studies with a focus on the methodological aspects. We conclude that the different studies of eye movements in surgery suggest that the
recording of eye movements may be beneficial both for skill assessment and training purposes, although more research will be needed in this field
