Development of an error detection and correction component for high capacity magnetic disc
We developped an electronic component able to protect variable length magnetic disc records as long as 50 kbt'tes .
This code can correct a single error burst of length 17 bits or less. The Chinese remainder method allows for a hig h
speed decoding.
The architecture of this circuit, which is quite original, is implemented using large scale integration techniques, in a

Disparity in 90Sr and 137Cs uptake in Alpine plants: phylogenetic effect and Ca and K availability
Background and aims: Uptake of 90Sr and 137Cs in plants varies widely between soil types and between plant species. It is now recognized that the radionuclide uptake in plants is more influenced by site-specific and plant-specific parameters rather than the bulk radionuclide concentration in soil. We hypothesized that the stress which Alpine plants experience because of the short growing season may enhance the phylogenetic effect on the 137Cs and 90Sr transfer factors as well as the dependency of the uptake by plant to the concentrations of exchangeable Ca and K of soils. Methods: We carried out a field study on the 90Sr and 137Cs uptake by 11 species of Alpine plants growing on 6 undisturbed and geochemically different soils in the Alpine valley of Piora, Switzerland. Results: Results show that a strong correlation exists between the log TF and the log of exchangeable Ca or K of the soils. Conclusions: Cs uptake by Phleum rhaeticum (Poales) and Alchemilla xanthochlora (Rosales) is more sensitive to the amount of exchangeable K in the soil than the corresponding uptake by other orders. Moreover, the 90Sr results indicate a phylogenetic effect between Non-Eudicot and Eudicots: the order Poales (Phleum rhaeticum) concentrating much less 90Sr than Eudicots d

A novel antibacterial peptide derived from Crocodylus siamensis haemoglobin hydrolysate induces membrane permeabilization causing iron dysregulation, oxidative stress and bacterial death
Aims
A novel antibacterial peptide from Crocodylus siamensis haemoglobin hydrolysate (CHH) was characterized for antimicrobial activity.
Methods and Results
CHHs were hydrolysed for 2 h (2 h-CHH), 4 h (4h-CHH), 6 h (6 h-CHH) and 8 h (8 h-CHH). The 8 h-CHH showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at concentrations of 20, 20, 20 and 10 mg ml−1 (w/v) respectively. Fluorescent microscopy revealed that the 8 h-CHH had bactericidal activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa. β-galactosidase assay supported by RT-qPCR demonstrated that the 8 h-CHH resulted in differential expression of genes involved in iron homeostasis (ftnA and bfd) and oxidative stress (sodA, soxR and oxyR). Siderophore assay indicated that the 8 h-CHH also impaired siderophore production with diminished expression of pvdF. This pattern of gene expression suggests that the 8 h-CHH triggers the release of free ferric ions in the cytoplasm. However, decreased expression of genes associated with the SOS response (recA and lexA) in combination with neutral comet revealed that no DNA damage was caused by 8 h-CHH. Membrane permeabilization assay indicated that 8 h-CHH caused membrane leakage thought to mediate the antibacterial and iron-stress responses observed, due to loss of regulated iron transport. The novel active peptide from 8 h-CHH was determined as QAIIHNEKVQAHGKKVL (QL17), with 41% hydrophobicity and +2 net charge.
Conclusions
The QAIIHNEKVQAHGKKVL fragment of C. siamensis haemoglobin is antibacterial via a mechanism that likely relies on iron dysregulation and oxidative stress which results in bacterial death.
Significance and Impact of the Study
We have described for the first time, a novel peptide derived from C. siamensis haemoglobin hydrolysate that has the potential to be developed as a novel antimicrobial peptide

Combination of electroweak and QCD corrections to single W production at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN LHC
Precision studies of the production of a high-transverse momentum lepton in
association with missing energy at hadron colliders require that electroweak
and QCD higher-order contributions are simultaneously taken into account in
theoretical predictions and data analysis. Here we present a detailed
phenomenological study of the impact of electroweak and strong contributions,
as well as of their combination, to all the observables relevant for the
various facets of the p\smartpap \to {\rm lepton} + X physics programme at
hadron colliders, including luminosity monitoring and Parton Distribution
Functions constraint, precision physics and search for new physics signals.
We provide a theoretical recipe to carefully combine electroweak and strong
corrections, that are mandatory in view of the challenging experimental
accuracy already reached at the Fermilab Tevatron and aimed at the CERN LHC,
and discuss the uncertainty inherent the combination. We conclude that the
theoretical accuracy of our calculation can be conservatively estimated to be
about 2% for standard event selections at the Tevatron and the LHC, and about
5% in the very high transverse mass/lepton transverse momentum tails. We
also provide arguments for a more aggressive error estimate (about 1% and 3%,
respectively) and conclude that in order to attain a one per cent accuracy: 1)
exact mixed corrections should be computed in
addition to the already available NNLO QCD contributions and two-loop
electroweak Sudakov logarithms; 2) QCD and electroweak corrections should be
coherently included into a single event generator.Comment: One reference added. Final version to appear in JHE
