Book Review. Working Across Modalities in the Arts Therapies: Creative Collaborations. Edited by Tasha Colbert and Cornelia Bent

    Get PDF
This edited volume, ‘Working across Modalities in the Arts Therapies’, offers a window into cross modality working and transdisciplinary practice within and between the arts therapies and related disciplines. The book adds to a growing body of literature that addresses interdisciplinary work with a focus on the place where the individual arts therapies meet and where the arts therapies meet other healthcare and psychological interventions, such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and nurses, for example, in a “joined up approach that adheres to core principles while accessing skills unique to each discipline”(p: xxii)

A History of the Shepherd of the Hills Dramatizations: the Branson Productions

    Get PDF
Harold Bell Wright\u27s most successful novel, The Shepherd of the Hills, was, in the 1920\u27s, ranked behind only The Bible, The Koran, and Gone with the Wind in popularity, and has been filmed five times. The story has been dramatized by several different theatrical agencies, including The Federal Theatre Project and the Poli Players of Connecticut. The Branson, Missouri, productions have been staged by Southern Illinois State University, Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg, The Old Mill Players, Inc., and finally The Shepherd of the Hills Historical Society, Inc. This final production was partially responsible for the influx of tourism to southwest Missouri and helped create the tourist Mecca of Branson, Missouri. Though no longer the premiere attraction for the area, The Shepherd of the Hills play has succeeded in developing the local identity and establishing the myth of the Ozark hills. This historical report of the Branson productions illustrates the uniqueness of The Shepherd of the Hills in relation to the tourism trade in Branson and to Outdoor Drama in America

The effect of non-glaucousness, as conferred by Inhibitor of Wax 1, on physiology and yield of UK Wheat

Abstract As the first barrier to the external environment, the epicuticular waxes have a number of key roles in plant physiology. Although the wheat wild progenitors display a diversity of epicuticular wax phenotypes, the glaucous (visible wax) phenotype dominates cultivated varieties. However, the UK winter wheat variety Shamrock is unusual in that it exhibits a non-glaucous phenotype, conferred by the wild emmer gene Inhibitor of Wax 1 (Iw1). UK field trials with Shamrock associated a yield advantage of 4.15% with Iw1. This PhD tests the hypothesis that Iw1 imparts an advantage for wheat yield and physiology in the UK. Crossing Shamrock with six glaucous UK winter wheat varieties (Malacca, Alchemy, Hereward, Xi19, Robigus and Einstein) created non-glaucous near isogenic lines (NILs) with Iw1. NILs were grown at multiple field trial locations in the east of England over four years. A long-term shade trial reducing incoming light by 40 and 60% was also carried out in 2014. Yield, and various physiological components including water use efficiency (WUE) and spectral properties, were measured. Iw1 reduced flag leaf photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reflectance by 15-40% and canopy reflectance by 12-20% (p<0.05). Despite this, Iw1 did not affect flag leaf PAR absorbance or canopy temperature, and conferred no advantage under long-term shading. Furthermore, there was no difference between NILs in photoinhibition following an extended period of high light stress. Iw1 did not affect WUE or yield. However, non-glaucous Hereward and Alchemy NILs yielded 4.96±1.15% (p<0.001) and 2.59±1.01% (p=0.045) more than their glaucous counterparts, although this advantage did not map to Iw1. Iw1 offered no advantage to UK winter wheat under normal UK growing conditions, nor under long-term shading. However, the yield advantage associated with the Iw1 introgression in Hereward and Alchemy is significant within a backdrop of plateauing wheat yields and worth pursuing

Cavitation In Hydraulic Structures-Bridging the Gap Between the Laboratory and the Real World

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT: Recollections of a thirty-five-year career at the hydraulic laboratory of the Bureau of Reclamation are presented within the context of using all the tools at your disposal to reach the best possible answer to your research questions. Cavitation in hydraulic structures will be the main topic used to illustrate this premise, using historic examples and current research to demonstrate study approaches, testing techniques, and applied solutions to real world problems

Towards posthuman dancing subjects: a critical commentary assemblage that interrupts five published works through the lens of practice-led, new materialist research

This PhD by publication is a practice-led, critical commentary assemblage on a portfolio of five published works through a new materialist, posthuman, postqualitative (NMPHPQ) lens, developing a thematic focus on posthuman subjectivity. Postqualitative research is used in this re-turning as a departure from qualitative research methodologies that underpin the existing publications in my portfolio, following an NMPHPQ ontological and epistemological turn in my practice and research. This research inquiry explores the concept of posthuman subjectivity as it manifests in transdisciplinary practice embracing, firstly, dance as a participatory process, secondly, ecopsychology as a practice that locates the human subject within a wider ecology and, thirdly, critical disability studies as a portal to non-binary practice. These diffractive intersections unveil power-laden, ethical discourses that have subordinated matters of the body, privileging particular bodies over others. As this thesis unfolds, a knowledge symposium maps out the research assemblage, theorising the body as process, the environmentally contextualised human subject and the (dis)abled body, problematising notions of the human subject and reaching towards posthuman subjectivity. This practice-led, NMPHPQ inquiry employs diffractive analysis in challenging binary discourses, towards considering how the subordination of matters that have been made to matter less hold the potential for redefining how identities are organised and subjectivities are conceived and performed. This thesis moves transversally across disciplines and genres and is presented via text, photography and film in a trans-modal style, with an emphasis on transdisciplinarity. In moving towards the posthuman dancing subject, I consider the implications for practice in the field of psychotherapy, identifying the transdisciplinary potential of diffracting across dance movement psychotherapy (DMP), ecopsychotherapy and critical disability studies, embedding the notion of the posthuman subject into practice in a way that is emancipatory and decolonising

Prayers For the Wild At Heart: Personal Essays

It is my contention that writers wll violate their own privacy, that is, reveal their innermost thoughts and dreams, when they are comfortable with the manner and context in which their privacy is broken. Thus, the vehicle for crossing the line is important. By discovering their personal voice through utilization of the narrative personal essay, writers will be able to break the fear of writing in a voice that reveals the essence of their souls. The personal essay is not a work of fiction. In this mode, writers are forced to self-reflect on their subject, accessing a mercurial memory, then transcribing a jumble of half-remembered events, raw feelings, and private thoughts by funneling the information into the form in the context of their present-day situation. The danger, therefore, is that writers may go too far in revealing themselves, thus alienating their readers. It is essential that the writer remember to make the essay relevant and accessible to any reader. This thesis demonstrates how I have managed to adjust to the pitfalls inherent in writing in this mode

    Military Model of Leadership

    Get PDF
Military leadership has been tested and refined since the beginning of armed conflict. Society has entrusted its safety and welfare to a select few. These men and women of the Armed Forces have proven themselves worthy of this distinction. A soldier has a very distinct view of his peers in the sister services. Researching the various armed services\u27 leadership training programs, has given clear indication that they are more alike then different. All services have based their leadership training on the same essential points: levels of leadership, values, attributes, skills, actions, human dimensions, stress, leadership styles, and consequences. These points make up the Military Leadership Model. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on this Military Leadership Model as it applies to those in uniform
