    In vitro corrosion of ZEK100 plates in Hank's Balanced Salt Solution

    Background: In recent years magnesium alloys have been intensively investigated as potential resorbable materials with appropriate mechanical and corrosion properties. Particularly in orthopedic research magnesium is interesting because of its mechanical properties close to those of natural bone, the prevention of both stress shielding and removal of the implant after surgery. Methods: ZEK100 plates were examined in this in vitro study with Hank's Balanced Salt Solution under physiological conditions with a constant laminar flow rate. After 14, 28 and 42 days of immersion the ZEK100 plates were mechanically tested via four point bending test. The surfaces of the immersed specimens were characterized by SEM, EDX and XRD. Results: The four point bending test displayed an increased bending strength after 6 weeks immersion compared to the 2 week group and 4 week group. The characterization of the surface revealed the presence of high amounts of O, P and Ca on the surface and small Mg content. This indicates the precipitation of calcium phosphates with low solubility on the surface of the ZEK100 plates. Conclusions: The results of the present in vitro study indicate that ZEK100 is a potential candidate for degradable orthopedic implants.     Collecting the EU's Regional Funds

    One of the key funding mechanisms of the European Union is the Regional Policy, which helps to implement infrastructure projects across the 27 member states. Money is allocated along a set of objectives and disbursed at the regional level, by 60-odd managing bodies. But who is getting the money and what is it really spent on? The answer lies distributed across the local administrations and has only been collected into a common database once, in 2010. It took the TBIJ and Financial Times eight months to gather the information, leading to a series of disclosures about misallocated funds and shady projects. This is why we believe that there should be a constantly-updated database of these reports, maintained by an open community and available as a resource to journalists and policy makers at any time. The right time to start such a data commons, as the 2007-2013 budgetary cycle of the EU is coming to a close and it's time to get a picture of how well the goals set out for 347 billion Euros of funding during this period have been reflected in actual projects. We want to make a map of member states and regions where open data projects are already collecting this data and then form small teams to take on the uncharted terrtories, find PDF reports and to convert them to clean and useable data.     A Method For The Embedding Of Arbitrary Communication Topologies Into Configurable Parallel Computers

    This paper presents a method for embedding arbitrary communication topologies into crossbar interconnection networks. The embedding problem is divided into two parts: first, the placement of the program modules onto the processors, solved by means of quadratic assignment and second, the assignment between logical and physical data channels, solved by means of linear programming. Our method differs from those in other papers in the sense that it is a general approach not restricted to a special class of communication or network topologies. We prove that in some cases our method is optimal, that means the number of links occupied by the embedding is minimized. Furthermore the assignment of the communication links is always optimal for a given placement of the program modules. Our technique has been applied to a crossbar network of a parallel signal processor system consisting of 256 modules.     Gene expression analysis on a single cell level in Purkinje cells of Huntington's disease transgenic mice

    Ataxia is a clinical feature of most polyglutamine disorders. Cerebellar neurodegeneration of Purkinje cells (PCs) in Huntington's Disease (HD) brain was described in the 1980s. PC death in the R6/2 transgenic model for HD was published by Turmaine et al. [27]. So far, PCs have not been examined on a single cell level. In order to begin to understand PC dysfunction and degeneration in HD we performed a gene expression study on laser-dissected PC based on a DNA microarray screening and quantitative real time PCR (Q-PCR). We demonstrate downregulation of the retinoid acid receptor-related orphan receptor alpha (ROR alpha) mRNA and ROR alpha-mediated mRNAs, also seen by immunofluorescent staining. As ROR alpha and ROR alpha-dependent transcriptional dysregulation is not only found in the R6/2 model for HD but also in a model for spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) (Serra et al.
