    This paper provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci's ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci's ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The essay concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci's concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author's view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.peer-reviewe

    A uniform treatment of the orbital effects due to a violation of the Strong Equivalence Principle in the gravitational Stark-like limit

    We analytically work out several effects which a violation of the Strong Equivalence Principle (SEP) induces on the orbital motion of a binary system constituted of self-gravitating bodies immersed in a constant and uniform external field. We do not restrict to the small eccentricity limit. Moreover, we do not select any specific spatial orientation of the external polarizing field. We explicitly calculate the SEP-induced mean rates of change of all the osculating Keplerian orbital elements of the binary, the perturbation of the projection of the binary orbit onto the line-of-sight, the shift of the radial velocity, and the range and range-rate signatures and as well. We find that the ratio of the SEP precessions of the node and the inclination of the binary depends only on and the pericenter of the binary itself, being independent on both the magnitude and the orientation of the polarizing field, and on the semimajor axis, the eccentricity and the node of the binary. Our results, which do not depend on any particular SEP-violating theoretical scheme, can be applied to quite general astronomical and astrophysical scenarios. They can be used to better interpret present and future SEP experiments, especially when several theoretical SEP mechanisms may be involved, and to suitably design new dedicated tests.Comment: LaTex2e, 14 pages, no figures, no tables, 42 references.     Permeating the social justice ideals of equality and equity within the context of Early Years: challenges for leadership in multi-cultural and mono-cultural primary schools

    The ideology and commitment of social justice principles is central to Early Years practice, however, the term social justice in education is complex and remains contested. This paper explores the ideology of social justice through links between equality and equity and how it is embedded within Early Years, and what remain the potential challenges for leadership. Interviews in English multi-cultural and mono-cultural primary schools were conducted. Findings showed that the ideology of social justice, equality and equity was interpreted differently. Multi-cultural schools appear to use a greater variety of activities to embed social justice principles that involved their diverse communities more to enrich the curriculum. In mono-cultural schools leadership had to be more creative in promoting equality and equity given the smaller proportion of their diverse pupil and staff population. Tentative conclusions suggest that the vision for permeating equality and equity in Early Years, at best, is at early stages

    Love, rights and solidarity: studying children's participation using Honneth's theory of recognition

    Recent attempts to theorize children’s participation have drawn on a wide range of ideas, concepts and models from political and social theory. The aim of this article is to explore the specific usefulness of Honneth’s theory of a ‘struggle for recognition’ in thinking about this area of practice. The article identifies what is distinctive about Honneth’s theory of recognition, and how it differs from other theories of recognition. It then considers the relevance of Honneth’s conceptual framework to the social position of children, including those who may be involved in a variety of ‘participatory’ activities. It looks at how useful Honneth’s ideas are in direct engagement with young people’s praxis, drawing on ethnographic research with members of a children and young people’s forum. The article concludes by reflecting on the implications of this theoretical approach and the further questions which it opens up for theories of participation and of adult–child relations more generally
