Protogalactic Extension of the Parker Bound
We extend the Parker bound on the galactic flux of magnetic
monopoles. By requiring that a small initial seed field must survive the
collapse of the protogalaxy, before any regenerative dynamo effects become
significant, we develop a stronger bound. The survival and continued growth of
an initial galactic seed field G demand that . For a given
monopole mass, this bound is four and a half orders of magnitude more stringent
than the previous `extended Parker bound', but is more speculative as it
depends on assumptions about the behavior of magnetic fields during
protogalactic collapse. For monopoles which do not overclose the Universe
(), the maximum flux allowed is now cm^{-2}
s^{-1} sr^{-1}, a factor of 150 lower than the maximum flux allowed by the
extended Parker bound.Comment: 9 pages, 1 eps figur
Sensitivity plots for WIMP modulation searches
Prospects of WIMP searches using the annual modulation signature are
discussed on statistical grounds, introducing sensitivity plots for the
WIMP-nucleon scalar cross section.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, talk given at TAUP'99, september 199
Status and preliminary results of the ANAIS experiment at Canfranc
ANAIS (Annual Modulation with NaI's) is an experiment planned to investigate
seasonal modulation effects in the signal of galactic WIMPs using up to 107 kg
of NaI(Tl) in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (Spain). A prototype using
one single crystal (10.7 kg) is being developed before the installation of the
complete experiment; the first results presented here show an average
background level of 1.2 counts/(keV kg day) from threshold (Ethr~4 keV) up to
10 keV.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, talk delivered at the 7th International Workshop

Sensitivity plots for WIMP direct detection using the annual modulation signature
Annual modulation due to the Earth's motion around the Sun is a well known
signature of the expected WIMP signal induced in a solid state underground
detector. In the present letter we discuss the prospects of this technique on
statistical grounds, introducing annual-modulation sensitivity plots for the
WIMP-nucleon scalar cross section for different materials and experimental
conditions. The highest sensitivity to modulation is found in the WIMP mass
interval 10 GeV< m_W < 130 GeV, the actual upper limit depending from the
choice of the astrophysical parameters, while the lowest values of the
explorable WIMP-nucleon elastic cross-sections fall in most cases within one
order of magnitude of the sensitivities of present direct detection WIMP
searches.Comment: 24 pages, ReVTeX, 9 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physic
Natural Theories of Ultra-Low Mass PNGB's: Axions and Quintessence
We consider the Wilson Line PNGB which arises in a U(1)^N gauge theory,
abstracted from a latticized, periodically compactified extra dimension U(1).
Planck scale breaking of the PNGB's global symmetry is suppressed, providing
natural candidates for the axion and quintessence. We construct an explicit
model in which the axion may be viewed as the 5th component of the U(1)_Y gauge
field in a 1+4 latticized periodically compactified extra dimension. We also
construct a quintessence PNGB model where the ultra-low mass arises from
Planck-scale suppressed physics itself.Comment: 20 pages, fixed typo and reference
Cosmological Consequences of String-forming Open Inflation Models
We present a study of open inflation cosmological scenarios in which cosmic
strings form betwen the two inflationary epochs. It is shown that in these
models strings are stretched outside the horizon due to the inflationary
expansion but must necessarily re-enter the horizon before the epoch of equal
matter and radiation densities. We determine the power spectrum of cold dark
matter perturbations in these hybrid models, finding good agreement with
observations for values of and comparable
contributions from the active and passive sources to the CMB. Finally, we
briefly discuss other cosmological consequences of these models.Comment: 11 LaTeX pages with 3 eps figure
Search for an annual modulation of dark-matter signals with a germanium spectrometer at the Sierra Grande Laboratory
Data collected during three years with a germanium spectrometer at the Sierra
Grande underground laboratory have been analyzed for distinctive features of
annual modulation of the signal induced by WIMP dark matter candidates. The
main motivation for this analysis was the recent suggestion by the DAMA/NaI
Collaboration that a yearly modulation signal could not be rejected at the 90%
confidence level when analyzing data obtained with a high-mass low-background
scintillator detector. We performed two different analyses of the data: First,
the statistical distribution of modulation-significance variables (expected
from an experiment running under the conditions of Sierra Grande) was compared
with the same variables obtained from the data. Second, the data were analyzed
in energy bins as an independent check of the first result and to allow for the
possibility of a crossover in the expected signal. In both cases no
statistically significant deviation from the null result was found, which could
support the hypothesis that the data contain a modulated component. A plot is
also presented to enable the comparison of these results to those of the DAMA
collaboration.Comment: New version accepted by Astroparticle Physics. Changes suggested by
the referee about the theoretical prediction of rates are included.
Conclusions remain unaffected. 14 pages, LaTeX, 7 figures. Uses epsfig macr
Constraining the dark energy with galaxy clusters X-ray data
The equation of state characterizing the dark energy component is constrained
by combining Chandra observations of the X-ray luminosity of galaxy clusters
with independent measurements of the baryonic matter density and the latest
measurements of the Hubble parameter as given by the HST key project. By
assuming a spatially flat scenario driven by a "quintessence" component with an
equation of state we place the following limits on the
cosmological parameters and : (i) and (1) if the
equation of state of the dark energy is restricted to the interval (\emph{usual} quintessence) and (ii) and
() if violates the null energy condition and assume values (\emph{extended} quintessence or ``phantom'' energy). These results are in
good agreement with independent studies based on supernovae observations,
large-scale structure and the anisotropies of the cosmic background radiation.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, LaTe
