    A lithospheric cross-section through the Swiss Alps—I. Thermokinematic modelling of the Neoalpine orogeny

    In this paper we develop a forward 2-D thermokinematic model to investigate the Neoalpine 35-0 Ma phase of orogeny along the European Geotraverse (EGT) through the Swiss Alps on a crustal and lithospheric scale. Using a divergence-free kinematic model (div v=0), we define mass displacements, which subsequently serve as input to a transient thermal model. the thermal model uses critically assessed material prorameters and accounts for the depth dependence of the thermal properties in processes such as crustal thickening and mantle-lithospheric subduction. Based on the presentday density pattern of the deep seismic image and estimated exhumation and shortening rates, we derive, in a first modelling step, a mass-displacement field describing the Neoalpine orogeny as a uniform process in time. In a second—thermal—modelling step, this kinematic scenario is further refined by modelling the non-uniform cooling histories of the southern Lepontine in the Penninic domain. For that purpose we adopt lithospheric shortening rates—and consequently exhumation rates—to agree with total Neoalpine shortening, while keeping the geometry of the kinematic model fixed. the resultant thermokinematic model reflects the main characteristics of Neoalpine tectonics, and shows a good overall agreement with combined geological and geophysical data. the asymmetric feature of the present-day tectonic structure along the profile is strongly reflected in the thermal structure of the lithosphere. This demonstrates the need for a kinematic model to investigate the deep-temperature field in active tectonic provinces. For further refinement of the model, the amounts of shortening have to be more precisely estimated, and a higher spatial density in geochronological and metamorphic data is required. Furthermore, surface heat-flow values are, up to now, too uncertain to constrain the predicted surface heat flow. In summary, our results show that we need, in particular, data constraining the horizontal component of the tectonic and thermal evolution. the results of the Neoalpine orogeny modelling demonstrate that the presented thermokinematic procedure yields a good first-order approximation to investigate crustal-scale and lithospheric processes. We conclude. therefore, that the approach presented provides the potential for application not only to continent-continent collision zones, but also to any active tectonic provinc

    Half-metallicity and efficient spin injection in AlN/GaN:Cr (0001) heterostructure

    First-principles investigations of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Cr-doped AlN/GaN (0001) heterostructures reveal that Cr segregates into the GaN region, that these interfaces retain their important half-metallic character and thus yield efficient (100 %) spin polarized injection from a ferromagnetic GaN:Cr electrode through an AlN tunnel barrier - whose height and width can be controlled by adjusting the Al concentration in the graded bandgap engineered Al(1-x)Ga(x)N (0001) layers.Comment: submitted for publicatio

    It is shown that the NN-dark soliton solutions of the integrable discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger (IDNLS) equation are given in terms of the Casorati determinant. The conditions for reduction, complex conjugacy and regularity for the Casorati determinant solution are also given explicitly.     Magnetic Behavior in RRhX (R = rare earths; X=B, C) Compounds

    We report on the magnetic behavior of RRhB (R = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb and Tm) and RRhC (R = La, Ce, Pr and Gd) compounds crystallizing in the cubic perovskite type structure with space group Pm3m. The heat capacity data on Pauli-paramagnetic LaRhB and LaRhC indicate a high frequency vibrating motion of boron and carbon atoms in the unit cell. Ce is in -like nonmagnetic state in both the compounds. Pr compounds show a dominant crystal field effect with a nonmagnetic singlet ground state in PrRhB and a nonmagnetic quadrupolar doublet in PrRhC. Compounds with other rare earths order ferromagnetically at low temperatures except TmRhB in which the zero field evolution of magnetic interactions is relatively more complicated. The electrical resistivity of GdRhB decreases with increasing temperature in the paramagnetic state in the vicinity of T, which is rarely seen in ferromagnets. The behavior is discussed to be arising due to the short range spin fluctuation and a possible contribution from Fermi surface geometry.Comment: 14 Figs and a text fil

    Intracluster stars in the Virgo cluster core

    We have investigated the properties of the diffuse light in the Virgo cluster core region, based on the detection of intracluster planetary nebulae (PNe) in four fields. We eliminate the bias from misclassified faint continuum objects, using improved Monte Carlo simulations, and the contaminations by high redshift Lyα\alpha galaxies, using the Lyα\alpha luminosity function in blank fields. Recent spectroscopic observations confirm that our photometric PN samples are well-understood. We find that the diffuse stellar population in the Virgo core region is inhomogeneous on scales of 30'-90': there exist significant field-to-field variations in the number density of PNe and the inferred amount of intracluster light, with some empty fields, some fields dominated by extended Virgo galaxy halos, and some fields dominated by the true intracluster component. There is no clear trend with distance from M87. The mean surface luminosity density, its rms variation, and the mean surface brightness of diffuse light in our 4 fields are ΣB=2.7x106\Sigma_B = 2.7 x 10^{6} LB_{B\odot} arcmin2^{-2}, rms=2.1×106{rms} = 2.1 \times 10^{6} LB_{B\odot} arcmin2^{-2}, and μˉB=29.0\bar{\mu}_{B}=29.0 mag arcsec2^{-2} respectively. Our results indicate that the Virgo cluster is a dynamically young environment, and that the intracluster component is associated at least partially with local physical processes like galaxy interactions or harassment. We also argue, based on kinematic evidence, that the so-called 'over-luminous' PNe in the halo of M84 are dynamically associated with this galaxy, and must thus be brighter than and part of a different stellar population from the normal PN population in elliptical galaxies.Comment: 31 pages, 6 figure.
